Can't select objects to target

I've got to rescue a kerbal from orbit but I've found I can't target him on map mode. I have no idea why - tried restarting etc. etc. I can't target the mun or any other planets either. I am a beginning so I might just be doing it wrong, but any help would be appreciated.

It's technically possible to do those missions without upgrading the tracking station, but it is considerably harder if you don't already understand the technique. This old tutorial covers how you can accomplish this - it's from the days before targeting was an option . Funnily enough the assumption that the target is in a 100km orbit is quite appropriate for rescuing kerbals

You can target the kerbal without the tracking station if you can physically see him. So once you're within a few dozen km of the kerbal, get out of map mode, find him, click him and select him as your target.
