KSP and System crashing/freezing upon rotating view in VAB

What Happens: KSP and computer freeze upon rotating camera in VAB

Mods / Add-Ons: All Stock

So i just dual installed Ubuntu with my windows 8.1, installed all drivers, installed all programs, then installed KSP via steam. However, everytime I try to build in the VAB my computer freezes. I have mouse control and music plays but everything else is frozen and locked up.

Steps to Replicate:

1) Select any part in VAB

2) Attempt to rotate camera

Result: Freeze of KSP and computer

Fixes/Workarounds:

- Hard reset system

I have the exact same issue (just started a thread about it in the modded support section). I still don't know what's causing this.

For me unlike in your case, the unmodded install doesn't present this problem, but once I install mods, the problem starts.

I hope someone can help us out

Does the system "freeze" completely (rare) ? You don't get "kernel panic" ?

Can you switch to a terminal as stated in the other thread (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and log in ?

Have you tried this:

Run ksp with lower resolution in a window and keep a terminal window open aside. You can follow a logfile with the command "tail -f [pathname]". Candidates are /var/log/kern.log ar [pathtoksp]/ksp.log or /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Case sensitive.

Hope i don't annoy you ... but maybe we can come closer to what happens. "Freezing" systems are ... not satisfying.

What's your hardware? More specifically, what's the Video card and drivers? NVIDIA/AMD/Intel? Using open source or proprietary drivers?

Have the exact same problem.

Running no mods.

System freezes completely when i try to rotate the camera in the VAB.

Have htop, sensors and a tail -f of the KSP log running on second monitor. When freeze happens, everything freezes, and system is completely unresponsive, nothing out of the ordinary otherwise.

Nothing out of the ordinary in any of my system logs either.

Nothing in the KSP logs.

As far as I recall, Sal, those errors are standard fare for most installations at the moment.

Sippyfrog, have you tried running KSP with the LC_ALL=C command?

I've been running KSP on Ubuntu 14.04 for a long time and never had this problem. That's using two nVidia graphics cards (a 610 and a 750 Ti) with nVidia's proprietary drivers.

I think knowing which graphics card and which driver will be important for diagnosing this.

Also important is whether you run KSP from Steam or by running it directly, since Steam provides its own versions of certain libraries for games to use.

it happens in both modded and no modded installs. Game is launched directly, not trough steam in my case
