RUD - rapid unscheduled disassembly

His last tweet (after sharing the photos from the "RUD" in question) was even more "Kerbalish":

Next rocket landing on drone ship in 2 to 3 weeks w way more hydraulic fluid. At least it shd explode for a diff reason.

You can't make this stuff up. :D

So, when people curse about their ruddy ships, this is where the term comes from. Example: "That ruddy rocket won't make it out of the atmosphere!"

"Ruddy" is now a more colloquial term used to describe general dissatisfaction about something. But when used to describe a space-craft, in particular, the term "ruddy" really indicates the person's opinion that it just might blow up at any time.

It originally derived from the acronym "R.U.D." which stands for "Rapid Unscheduled Dis-assembly." An RUD can occur for many reasons, not necessarily an explosion, although explosions are common for these incidents regarding space-craft. Another common cause of a RUD is descending too quickly, breaking up in reentry, or hitting the ground too hard from insufficient use of parachutes or controlled landings.

Thus, "ruddy" can be used to describe any general way that the speaker thinks the craft might fail. Lately, "rudding", "rudd'n", or "rut'n" can be heard in certain dialects, as variant adjectives to describe the same thing. E.g. "That ruddy ship..." or "That rudd'n ship..."

When something has gone wrong on the launch pad, I've always thought of them as SMEF events

Ie My latest single stage to Jool rocket had a Spontaneous Massive Existence Failure because some moron started the SRBs and failed to notice the radial decouplers for the same were on the same stage.....

I've been saying yard sale which is what we say skiing when you eat $#!% and all your gear is scatter about the hill side

Yard sale is a lovely euphemism. Very fitting when your gear is strewn across a mountainside too.

I think this warrants a set of images demonstrating rocket failure euphemisms. Time to mine my screenshot folders, and take more for posterity.

RUD, lithobraking and others have been used in real-life aerospace for decades (I know we used them in the 90's in industry, and they were old terms even then). I expect they go back to the Cold Ward/Steely-Eyed Missile Man days.

I think we (KSP player base) stole them from the aerospace industry.

Single Stage Rockets don't have SRBs, and if they did, they wouldn't be able to detach.
