SPH Symetry?

When constructing ships in the SPH I used to turn the ship on its side so I could place parts that would be symmetrical top to bottom. With the new editor system it no longer lets me do this, instead its trying to place both pieces on the same side as though I hadn't rotated the ship. I'm really struggling to build things due to having a lot less options symmetry wise.

Is there any way around this to keep ships symmetrical top to bottom?

I know about using radial symmetry but that messes up a lot of placement later on.

Were I trying to do that, I would be all over it with the offset tool. Use that little yellow dot on the radial engine up top to assure proper alignment.

What is your root part, and is it rotated sideways? (Like the Mk1 lander can) Because you rotated the ship sideways, it's causing the mirror symmetry to act in a sideways axis. I don't know that it'll fix it, but you can try changing the axis of symmetry with the "F" key. (It's sometimes finicky and may require you to have mirror symmetry selected and the parts greened up before it'll work.) That should (hopefully) put it around the part you're building on instead of the root part, and vice versa.

Otherwise you'll have to change to a new root part that isn't sideways. Maybe it'll do what you want then.

The root part is an inline lander can which is out of sight (you can just see it a bit)

What I could previously do was turn the ship sideways and then place the fuel tanks on the top, this would then be mirrored on bottom.

With the new editor it tries to place both tanks on the top no matter which way I orientate the ship. I can get around this using radial symmetry but this messes up the construction later on.

In both the spaceplane hangar and the VAB you can hit the R key to toggle between mirror symmetry and radial symmetry when you're building. That might save having to rotate to achieve the effect.

Might it work to detach the part you want to attach them to, rotate just it, and re-attach, then try placing?

^ and ^^. Neither of those suggestions works. Radial symmetry messes up construction later on. Detaching one part and rotating has the same effect as rotating the whole ship. Both tanks want to attach to the top rather than one top one bottom.

Maybe it depends on the direction of your controling part (or root part). Try rotate your root part AND those core

That's what I used to do when building. Now it doesn't work.

The pic at the top has the whole ship rotated sideways including the root.

I was actually thinking to place them to each side then rotate into place, but if it doesn't work...
