Visiting orbits of all Kerbol bodies in one trip: Delta-V? Mods?

Recommended Posts

Hey folks, I'm new here :)

I've been playing KSP for quite some time and now I have decided to go for my biggest challenge yet. I want to build a space ship/carrier that will visit every planet and moon in Kerbol system. The way I plan to do it is:

1) Park the carrier in lower ____ orbit

2) Fuel a reusable craft to land on said body and then rendezvous with carrier

The only exception will be Eve, where I'll probably use a special two stage craft to get back.

And of course I won't be landing on Jool. :confused:

I'm still in early planning. Right now I'm calculating delta-v I'll need for my voyage. And here's where I would need someone nice enough to double-check my calculations.

I. Delta-v calculations

I used a set of delta-v maps from reddit [link] and got the following delta-v (remember - all these are LXO to LYO):

(some might be off by up to 100, caused by rounding up or adding some extra delta-v to compensate for my navigating skills)

Kerbin -> Mun: 1200

Mun -> Minmus: 300

Minmus -> Eve: 1600

Eve -> Gilly: 1950

Gilly -> Moho: 1700

Moho -> Duna: 4500

Duna -> Ike: 450

Ike -> Dres: 1000

Dres -> Jool: 3400

Jool -> Laythe: 2650

Laythe -> Vall: 1050

Vall -> Tylo: 1050

Tylo -> Bop: 400

Pol -> Eeloo: 900

Eeloo -> Kerbin: 2850

That brings me to a total of about 28.5k delta-v.

Calculating delta-v for my landers adds to 34k delta-v. This will be stored in tanks on board my carrier and only refuel crafts to the amount required.

Is this about right or have I missed the correct number "by miles"?

II. Suggested mods

So far I've been using KW rocketry, Near Future mods, KAS and Infernal Rocketry for extra parts. Would I be able to pull this off with Near Future parts? Or would you suggest another mod?

I'm also wondering if there are any better cockpits that would make it feel like it's more of a space ship than just a regular rocket?

Hm, are you adverse to using resource gathering mods (Since they'd essentially make it very easy, since you could just refuel?) If not, I might recommend Karbonite.

Here's a (heavily modded) mission report of someone doing exactly that, visiting every planet/moon. the mission's done, but as I recall the writing isn't. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/93963-Avalon-A-mission-to-every-planet-and-moon-Investigation-Via-EVA

The values look reasonable. As far as saving fuel goes, firstly look at aerobraking opportunities. Secondly consider having the lander do some of the orbital transfers to and from the small bodies. For example leave the mothership in Duna orbit and have the lander go to ike and back.

Thanks for all the answers.

That link really helped, wibou. It showed me my numbers were in the correct ball-park :)

Also thanks for that confirmation, cantab. I did take into account aerobrakes for landers, but I didn't think about aerobraking my mothership :D (although, that would be a bit tricky to just take away SOME velocity, but not too much).

Norpo, that report looks great. Also helped me with a potentially interesting mod - LLL. However, I plan to do this mission without mining resources, so just what I bring with me. Still, thanks for that advice.

I might look into Karbonite and Kethane (thanks, klesh) for future missions, though.

I'm still open to suggestions about which other mods I should use - cockpit, habitat and maybe propulsion wise (xenon+ ISP).
