A rover bug?

Recommended Posts

I made a rover that doesn't drive. It cannot move at all. For the sake of experiment I used only stock parts to reproduce it:

Can anyone test it - will it drive? Is it just me or is it really a bug?

It appears if you add a radial attachment node and put a command pod (I tested MK-1, Viewing Cupola and Lander can with the same result) it won't move.

I even tried HyperEdit it (adding velocity or putting it to orbit) but it gets destroyed immediately.

I can't load your craft at the moment but the usual cause of this is that the wheels are the wrong way up. They need to be attached upright (the same way they appear when not attached to the rover when you first create the wheel) in order to work properly.

No, there's nothing of that. I attached and re-attached the wheels, then rebuilt the rover from scratch out of stock parts to test if this is some weird plugin issue.

All I need is to test - if this rover drives on someone else's machine.

WASD, no, I might be explaining badly.

I won't move as if it's being held by something. That 'something' is an upper cupola. I even tried to attach an engine to its rear and fired it. Nothing happened - the rover remained in place. If I remove the upper cupola - everything is fine. It's not just the cupola though - any manned module (MK1, or Lander can) produce the same result. The rover gets pinned down.

Then I opened a HyperEdit window and added 5 m/s to its prograde velocity - it buried itself underground and then exploded. If I added vertical velocity - it goes up several meters then falls apart.

In that case this sounds like the issue where some parts appear to get fixed in position. This has been reported with rockets on the launchpad that when you launch, the pod stays where it is and the bottom of the rocket takes off through it and blows up. If you attach an engine to the side instead so it doesn't push in line with the pod I suspect it will snap the pod off (or at least bend the craft noticeably).

I don't think the cause is knows but your example may help to track it down. The problem is more likely to be in your savegame. Can you zip it up and post it?

Yes, it exploded once and though all the parts were lying on the ground some part of it remained floating in the air unmoved. This is very similar to what you've described. But I've built a completely new rover from new parts and the problem remained.

I can post my saved game tonight, but it seems the bug related to some mods I use.

Still, this rover uses only stock parts and I cannot imagine a mod that would cause such an effect.

Well, you've posted this in the "unmodded installs" section. If you are using mods then it should be in the "modded" section. It may be a mod issue but I believe the issue I described happens in the stock game.

Have you tested to see if it still happens in a new save game?

Can you post a list of your mods (and, preferably, their versions)? I know that Kerbal Joint Reinforcement is being updated to fix a strange issue where docking ports appear to undock but remain stuck together, I suppose this could be another consequence of the same bug, though I think it is unlikely...

Here's a mod list:

I feel a bit dismayed when I think that I should turn them off one by one to see which one causes me the woes. Can anyone help me to shorten the list if possible?
