Air usage gauge for air breather engines

Recommended Posts

I've only recently started trying to get into SSTO's and I've been finding it an absolute pain trying to maximize speed to air availability for my engines. I think it would be an incredibly useful addition to get a slider or some sort of graphic that shows if you are using your air usage poorly or are being efficient. For example, if you are able to add to your air availability then the slider should show green whereas if you are being incredibly wasteful then it should show red. I believe this would help people understand the flying profile for SSTO's or fuel powered engines at various altitudes/speeds.

Kerbal Flight Data should be made stock, yes.

What do you mean by efficient air use, though? Apart from "point your intakes at the wind" and "faster equals more air, higher equals less air" and "throttle down before you flame out", there's not much to it.

Kerbal Engineer also has intake air information available and the HUD is more configurable. It doesn't have the other indicators that KFD has though, so if you are using FAR you probably want KFD, if you are using stock KER is fine.

Ok, I guess I should have been a little clearer with my original post. I constantly find myself pointing towards the ground (still maintaining positive vertical speed) in order to maintain a minimal air availability loss. Once I nose up, it goes from 0.1 to 0.7. Maybe it's my misunderstanding of using air breathing engines as I'm still rather new to them, I was merely suggesting possibly getting a slider that shows if you're being wasteful or being conservative.
