Strut strangeness

So I've got this craft with two 2.5m stages separated by a 1.25m decoupler, and to stop the joint wobbling I have six struts around the joint.

Now struts usually disappear when you stage off one of the things they are connected to. The little end points remain but the struts themselves vanish.

Imagine my surprise when I fired the decoupler and saw this:

The struts remained in their entirely with one end attached to the top stage and the other dangling in free space.

The craft is quite fine and the next stage works properly, it just has struts dangling off the bottom in a way I thought was impossible.

Anyone seen anything like this before, or can offer an explanation?

Did you use the 'offset' gizmo when placing the struts?

The only thing I can think of is that the struts are actually connected to the upper tank, and have been offset down so they look connected to the bottom tank.

Nope, I have never used the offset gizmo.

It happened to me once. I don't remember if it was 0.25 or 0.90. It was a situation similar to yours and I have no idea what caused it. It hasn't happened since.
