NASA Day of Remembrance 2015

Ted Freeman, Elliot See, Charlie Bassett, Clifton Williams, Robert Lawrence, Valentin Bondarenko, Vladimir Komarov, Georgi Dobrovolski, Viktor Patsayev, Vladislav Volkov, Sergei Vozovikov...the list is too long of brave explorers who gave all on our journey to the stars.

For me Gus Grissom said it best, "If we die we want people to accept it. We are in a risky business, and we hope that if anything happens to us, it will not delay the program. The conquest of space is worth the risk of life."

Godspeed to all.

NASA Day of Remembrance 2015

It's strange that all of the NASA disasters fall in a week of time (end of January, beginning of February). NASA has done a good job on this page, well worth a look.

It all has to do with the fiscal calendar they work with. Research and new tests and projects begin and get go-aheads after the yearly budget is approved.

Today I happened by accident to come across the cement hand print of Ed White (Apollo 1). I paused a moment, and just looked at that empty space where once there sat something, now long gone.

I think that I will remember that moment for a while.

A sobering reminder that rocket science is....well, rocket science. While the safety standard is paralleled to anything here on earth, accidents still happen. Sadly, sometimes that's the fault of humans.

It reminds me that rocket science is not a valid term. It's aerospace engineering.

NASA should also be commended for keeping the number of tragedies to a very low minimum. If NASA had not focused so much on the safety of its crews, the death toll would be much greater.

This video tribute is for the Space Shuttle specifically - but I like to think of the STS program as some of the best of NASA -

Here's to all the astronauts, past and present, who have helped bring big dreams to life every day!
