I usually try to keep them safe. And send rescue crafts for the ones that get stranded. Although I currently have 4 crewed rovers/bases with 2 Kerbals each (actually, 3 rovers and a stationary Duna base... because it's laying wheels up) that don't have a return vehicle assigned. Maybe I'll send replacement crews sometimes (and I'm definitely sending replacement rover to Duna next window).

Well, I'm not sending Kerbals to where I won't be able to get them from. That is, I still have to develop a reliable Eve ascent vehicle before sending anyone there.

I never leave them behind, if it can be avoided. If it can't... well, they get a kup of tea with the emperor and white bandana with some kerbal gibberish. None of them really cares about getting killed for science and the kerbalkind (And Jeb often looks straightforward eager to die), if it involves a SRB in some way.

Might change with the addition of Valentina, though. Don't ask me why.

I try to avoid killing kerbals and I'll send out a rescue craft on the rare times I manage to wreck a craft where the kerbal survives or runing out of fuel stranded them. But if they do happen to die, well .... happens. The most comon case of a kerbal becomeing strand... er promoted to flag planter, is when the landing craft tips over and cant right itself. I've got a little rescue hopper design that can land and return anywhere but eve (comand chair on top of a probe core, fuel tank and engien). I can push it almost anywhere in the system with a LVN driveing a fuel tank and command pod for the kerbal to ride home in after the hopper gets him to orbit.

I do everything I can to rescue them when things go wrong, and I always build memorials when they die. The memorial depends on who they are and how they died; Hensey died screaming in a flat spin while testing a spaceplane, so he gets an aeronautics memorial over at the abandoned hangar:

Kerbals who die in a rocket launch get a rocket shaped one near the KSC (outside of physics range, though. I would do anything for my kerbals, but I won't have lag :P ) and if they die in a landing they get a lander shaped one on the mun. I take every death personally.

...that being said, I won't think twice about sending them into highly dangerous and risky situations or using them as test subjects. Health and safety is not, all things considered, high on my list of priorities.
