How to 'blow' a decoupler that is specifed as 'debri'?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm in quite the pickle. I landed on the Mun with my ship which in order to leave needs to blow to hatches to release it's engines, the landing was harder than I expected so the landing part got blow off and in the process releasing one of the hatches but one is still in place. And I can't blow the TT-38k Radial Decoupler (or the other, more, smaller version) because it is on the lower part of the ship which the game count as 'debri'.

It has no command module or anything that I can control it with so I can't change the status from 'debri' to other.

Any solution on how I get the decoupler off? It can be any solution ranging from, example; modifying the save to send another ship.

Alshain, Don't have access to the computer right now. I'm asking how do I activate the mini radial-decoupler when the game classified it as 'debri'?

KerBlam, can't change to something that doesn't have a control interface and it classified as debri.

If there's no command part attached you're not going to be able to activate the decoupler in the usual way. You could attach a command part temporarily to the debris with the claw (or a docking port if the debris has one), then use that to stage the decoupler.

The other, more cheaty, option is to use Whack-a-kerbal from the debug menu to destroy the decoupler. Save your game first, it's hard to be precise.

If it's classified as debris, then it is considered a seperate thing from your vessel. You can switch to it with [ or ] . However, if that part doesn't have a command node, you may be stuck with it as a deadweight hanger-on. There is a chance you could jostle it free while thrusting and getting off the surface, but you should use your own knowledge of the situation to make the best decision. If you're that afraid that you can't escape with that part hanging on, you might have to send a rescue mission.

Consider revising future designs. Staging is a major consideration in design, and considered an undesirable necessity with most rocket systems these days, since anything you throw away from the vehicle always has a chance of flying off in a strange direction and hitting you, or blowing up or something.

Can Kerbals engage decouplers manually?

I've never tried it before.

You might be clipping. Try timewarping with ">" and then "<". (Or "," and ".", depending on how you see it.)

Something may explode. Quicksave beforehand. :)

Other than that, I'd send a rescue ship, or something with a control module and a claw. Grab on to take control, then decouple.

Easy, go into tracking station. Put mouse on very top to change filters, click on the left most filter to turn on debris. Find the decoupler that you just staged (I would use the map rather than the menu though it should be on the bottom of the menu as its generally sorted by time), and select the destroy that debris.

I think I'll try of those, thanks.

Now I if I only can figure out how to set this thread as 'answered' I'd be halfway on to the moon.. virtually.

Not easy, the bottom of the spacecraft, the debri part, needs to stay on the moon as a beacon to as where I will launch the next mission.

As for needing a beacon... can't see why you would, but you can just plant a flag and use that.

I want that honor to be Jebediah's.

If Jeb is destined to have the honor of planting the first flag on the Mun, why was Jeb not the first to land on the Mun?

I guess this is "history is written by the winners" at work here...

On Topic:

The best thing you can do in this situation is send a rescue craft if the notjeb's life is important to you. Otherwise, you could try planting a flag to use as a beacon, remove the debris from the tracking station and bringing notjeb back home. The second option has more risk that the first as deleting "debris" that isn't really debris and still very much attached to the craft can and will attract the kraken.

Yeah I guess I kind off dropped the ball on that one

And I already solved it, I whack-a-kerbal'd it.

My game says 'debris'.
That's interesting, in my game it's "debris" (as it should be since "debri" isn't a word.) Could you screenshot where you see this?

I'll try to get a picture tomorrow. And I actually did quote (almost) all: 'debri'.

But I guess it's not so strange as there are times when I start my KSP up and all the names and words are missing a few letters, example; S art Ga e - Start Game.

My bad, the game window was just so small so a part of the text where clipped.

I was gonna be a jerk and comment on the "debris" spelling
If I am misusing or misspelling a word then I would appreciate correction. I'd say the jerk move is to watch someone repeatedly making the same public mistake and doing nothing to help them.
