February 14th marked the 25th anniversary of the famous Pale Blue Dot picture that was taken by Voyager 1.

Carl Sagan requested that NASA turn the Voyager in the direction of Earth for one last photograph.

Distance of Voyager 1 to Earth from this picture:

3.7 billion miles

6 billion kilometers

40.5 AU

Earth's size is just less than a pixel.

I read Pale Blue Dot after checking it out from the library my freshman year of college. I loved that book and the words Sagan uses to describe that photo. Honestly, that book probably was a major reason why I declared myself a physics major my soph year. I haven't read it since then, I think I'll check it out and read it over spring break while I have time. Thank you for reminding me! I encourage everyone to read the entire book, its beautiful and beyond cosmos in some ways. It really helps put yourself in perspective for the world.

Edit: I guess I have to thank you, just bought my own copy off amazon. Can't wait to read it again!
