Itty Bitty Aeroplanes!

Recommended Posts

"Build the biggest/fastest/highest X !"

No.

This is a smaller, simpler challenge, for fun rather than fame, it was inspired by this, this and this.

Build an itty bitty, teeny tiny aeroplane...

And fly it as far as you're able...

And enjoy yourself...

Goto Stock Scoreboard. - Goto Modded Scoreboard.

This is a points based challenge and you rate yourself, it's on an honour system but if you are suspected or proven to be cheating there is a separate scoreboard for you, but you really should try to be inventive.

The points are gained like so:

Enter the challenge.

100 Points!

Fly a kilometre.

1 Point for each whole kilometre.

Carry a passenger.

1 Point for each Kerbal.

And points are lost...

Too heavy.

-1 Point for each 0.1 mass including fuel.

Too wide.
Too tall.

-1 Point for each 0.1 height.

Too long.

-1 Point for each 0.1 length.

Too complex.

-1 Point for each part.

We're doing this live.

-50 Points for no Kerbal.

If only I could fly.

-100 Points if you travel less than 1 kilometre.

By any means necessary.

-10000 Points if any part of your journey is by means other than airborne.

Spoiler

I start with 100 points, plus another 1 point for a single Kerbal on board.

The craft sans Kerbal in the SPH has a total negative value of -76. (-15 -3 -12 -18 -28)

So my craft gives me 25 points, (+101 -76)

And as you will see, any parts discarded at launch do not count to the points awarded.

Craft file.

And here is the Zunzuncito in flight.

25 points for my aeroplane plus 33 points for distance travelled earns me 58 points, a modest total for a modest challenge.

And if you'd like to show you participated, Raincrafter has a nice little signature badge for you here.

A long time ago (namely, July 2013! I didn't even have a screen-recording program.) I made this thing:

If I remember correctly, it had four parts (five counting the Kerbal), it had no fuel, it travelled from one end of the runway to the other (at about 5 m/s!) and it was tremendous fun.

Because this was done back in 0.20, it might not work anymore... I should probably update this post when I can replicate this in 0.90.

Anyway, just a bit of inspiration.

Is there an atmosphere ceiling on the 1 point per kilometer? If not, Jeb better bring some extra supplies, he'll be in orbit for awhile :P

Also, I assume the plane requires its own propulsion, and thus towed or launched gliders are out.

The tow plane would be part of your airborne vessel, so you'd have to add that, but I'm sure there's other ways to get a craft in the air ;)

Oh and Kerbins radius is 600km, so....

600 * 2 * pi / 2 = 1,884.95559215387 which is the furthest you can be from the KSC.

By any means necessary. -10000 Points if any part of your journey is by means other than airborne.

You'd get -8,115.04440784613 points :)

What are you calling "cheating", because I could build an infini-glider and just assume infinite points.

That would put you on the Cheater McCheatypants scoreboard, you know if you're cheating or not, and the rest of us can probably figure it out, such as if you put your plane on an escape trajectory ;)

30 parts, 1.7 tons in the SPH with attached pod. 27 parts/0.9 tons without attached pod. Manned, 30km distance. Stalled and splashed down hard 30km from the launch site. Seperatrons used for taking off, single PB-Ion for flight.

Not bad for a first attempt I suppose.

Edit: 26 parts/0.8 tons minus the launch clamp AND the pod. I make my total points 17.

Harder than it looks, is this challenge. I may have to go for distance.

I launched piloted 6 part, 0.2T, 2.1m wide craft powered by a single sepratron at 12% thrust. Climbed to 1Km on the thrust and started gliding, and glided, and glided, and glided, and glided, didn't actuate the control surfaces at all apart from to adjust the glide angle a couple of times. After 15 mins I deliberately ended the most uneventful and boring flight I've ever made (would of took over two hours to slow enough to a safe landing speed). I think maybe the SAS adjustment to keep level was giving me some infini-glide, it was maintaining height and loosing 0.1m/s every 30 seconds or so, I'm not sure that can be avoided?

If there's an aeroplane attached to that ladder it should be fine, I don't think you'd get much extra performance from the jetpack in Kerbins atmosphere though :)

But can your attention hold out long enough? :D

The Tiny-McTaterTot

I have no idea how big it is, or how far it goes... (1 lap around the KSC seems to be about it before you run out of fuel...) I guess you could drive somewhere if I only I hadn't turned off the wheel motors...

Seems to be impossible to land without breaking the wheels. (it won't fly slower than 34m/sec) oh well.

I think this is the only time I have ever found the small gear bay to be too large.

Tea was nearly ready, and, more importantly Andromeda followed by Star Treck had started on TV. I'll have a better attempt later :)

Hello

This is my entry for this contest

I used FAR but used only stock parts

my craft sets me back with -158 points

i flew about 1440km so i should have 1358 points

my craft features a RAPIER engine 2 radial intakes and a rocket seat+chute for the save abort procedure

max speed about 1530 m/s at 25km+

here are the pictures of the flight and some rocket seat testing (could be deadly at max q ^^)

http://imgur.com/a/zRDUH#0

craft info should be visible in the first image

My entry saddly goes for modded content as it used a propeller, cockpit, and one piece of hull/tank from Retro furtre and landing wheels from firespitter,

100 for entry +1 for one kerbal + 1585 for 1,585,347m traveled by ground distance, total distance traveled was 1,591,347m Not sure what one i should use so i used the lower number.

20 part craft -20

4ton Weight -40

3.7m Height -37

5.1m Width -51

9.6m Lenght -96

My total comes out to 1442 if using the lower ground distance number, or 1448 if using total distance traveled.

Modded parts

v12 propeller engine classic two prop, 65 max thrust

Retro Cockpit MK 1

Rectangular fuel tank 4m tapered 200 units fuel

FS1LG2 Fighter Landing Gear

FS1TG Fighter Tail Gear

Hey I'm here, I made a jet-pack a few fortnights or so ago and I decided it'd be a great idea to slap some wings on the thing!

Welcome the Wing-pack Mk I

(Click for full size)

5Cq9RdNb.png

sGr0jOwb.png

And I'm honestly not really sure if this should be considered cheating, but this is just a jet-pack with wings slapped on so its got a bit of infiniglide. Video should show what I mean. Re-watching the video makes me think it's too wobbly to not cheat.

Estimated score: 49 points.

100 + 10 + 1 = 111

-9- -9 - -17 - -18 - -9 = -62

Er mer gerd, that's brilliant! Try to avoid flapping the control surfaces too much Munstation and don't forget to subtract your jetpacks mass, dimensions and part count :)

Looks like 49 points there:

100+1+10=111

-9-9-17-18-9=-62

Hi! Got a submission for ya.

Modded install, but no modded engines used.

Not too concerned what class it's put into.

Non-stock parts:

Infernal Robotics Rototrons (front wing adjustment)

Infernal Robotics Hinge (VTOL angle adjustment... I did not use VTOL engine in this challenge)

HullCam cameras

Powered by a single TurboJet.

Also has a Basic Jet Engine as a VTOL engine, which was NOT used in this challenge.

Points:

100 + 677 + 1 = 778

53 - 49 - 32 - 66 - 33 = 233

778 - 233 = 545 points!

This puppy is a throw-together to investigate a crash site 24km offshore. It made it back (ish). I'd say, a very rough 50km, 3 tons on the runway (it was only about a third fuelled on takeoff), parts mods from B9, no rescaling.

I *cannot* stick the landing!
