I'd have to wonder just how large the device to induce and measure the spin of individual electrons would be.  Hard drives gradually shrunk in size from dishwasher sized (when initially developed, storing I believe 30MB on a *lot* of platters) to the 5.25" drive of the 1980s and 3.5" drive from the 90s- (in desktops and now typically servers) and the 2.5" (slightly later, but only in mobile).  There was an attempt by IBM to make a hard drive roughly the size of a [US] quarter, it may have shipped in some Ipods but was quickly outpaced by flash.  Optical media has stayed constant since reducing in size from laser disc [analog video] to CD.

Flash storage doesn't appear to have size limitations.  As far as I know, even microSDXC has extra size for humans to have something to hold and manually insert.

I wouldn't be surprised if electron spin based storage has hard limitations in size, but might be directly done by a chip (and who knows, possibly a "nanomachine" rotating plate).

Also the "memory"/"storage" dichotomy can get a little rough at the edges: memory needs to be accessed in groups of 512 bits (one 64-byte cacheline) while storage needs to be accessed in 32kbit groups (one 4k page).  Latency also makes a big difference between the two, and I'd expect that dealing with individual electron spins would be so noisy as to require something more like what modern systems use with the 32kbit arrays: LDPC or similar iterated error correction schemes that require at least considerable nanoseconds of extra delay.  For a real world example, Intel is trying to sandwich their (well theirs and Micron's) new 3dXP memory as being able to be used for either (and selling the "512bit DDR-like interface" this year).

Well like all promised tech we will have to wait and see if it becomes practical.  In theory the density can go very high which is why it's being worked on.  So it might have some min size but for large storage requirements it would be the best.  But then I'm still waiting for my fussion generator and the cure for baldness ;) .

First HD I worked with was 5MB about the size of a toy poodle.

Star systems. Simply star systems. Same quality as Kerbol, maybe even procedural.

Plus the warp parts and stuff needed.

I and other have suggested this in the distant past.  I think it's still a good idea.  Mine is to be able to generate random systems that can be saved and shared.  Lots of optional settings so I can guide it towards certain types of systems when desired.  Fun math to make sure systems are stable.  Some enhanced textures etc. too.

One of the criteria when buying my house was good Internet. No way I'd cope with some of the stuff people in this thread have, nor the prices. The US is crazy expensive for all telecoms stuff it seems.

Also, I'm one of the few people who gets more speed than I pay for I think (line is 350 mbps, I get ~390).

When I bought my we had dial up like everyone else except a few who had access to a T1 connection.  I now have a 3/1 late night which is about 300 baud, like my first modem, since Verizon and attached keep adding customers but not capacity.

I've been promised real broadband so often over the years I'll believe it when I see it, but I can't help hoping for a LEO satellite constilation to give some decent speeds so I could at least stream sd at times other than 2am and download a large game or three.

    Never built a layout?

Not since I was 10.  Worked on my grandfather's HO garage layout a bit in the 60's).  I sometimes build N scale models.  I've got my eyes on 3D printers though...maybe one of these days I might build a layout maybe even make my own dcc system (good excuse to brush up my assembly language skills).

  5. One thing I wonder about is combining the mouse with spoken commands (assuming speech hasn't been effected ).  This guy wrote a whole game using voice only input: the use case here should be much simpler.  Speed might be an issue though not so critical in KSP.

Meanwhile I turned mine on to verify it worked, which it didn't, and ended up - after 3 service visits - getting a new thermostat of all things.

This assuredly falls more in the "discuss in a general way" than "negative things" though, as the whole thing cost me $75 due to a very prescient decision to get a home warranty. And the new Thermostat was well over $200 retail so hey, there's that.

But never fear, that home warranty does not cover the drier and I basically had to learn everything there is to know about drier repair to fix it. I tell myself the nearly $300 I spent on parts (most of them unneeded) was less than I'd have paid someone to come out and do it correctly.

My fan was stuck.  Finally had to pop out the grill and force it: darn hard to budge...need to run it more often in winter.  I dread having to replace it... don't think I can lift that much weight anymore.

So what idiot started all this aircon talk anyway...oh wait. ;)

Quitting is easy.  I've quit cold turkey hundreds of times already.

It comes in piles?!?  (We had a blizzard last winter.  That means the snow wasn't completely gone by 10:00 AM.)

I'm on the Gulf Coast here.  The AC isn't actually running full-time yet, but it's not far off.

Well it slides off the roof...until it reaches the eves.  We had late but good winter about 20 feet in February...was snowed in for a few days (the county has trouble hiring plow drivers because of low pay).  If I could build a Rover like I can in KSP it would be no problem :) .

Unfortunately, even though we're all adults here the kiddietime rules of this forum prevent me from discussing some of the methods I used to help me quit.

One thing to internalize is that smoking cigarettes doesn't actually help you deal with stress better; in fact it makes it worse.  Check out the Easyway to Quit Smoking by Allen Carr.  The book helped me change my outlook on cigarettes.

My dad quit, cold turkey, when he was scarred by a stroke, he lived another 29 years.

Stop destroying my carefully built rationalizations!

    On the serious side, though:

Not every message is public, you know.

Well, a quick check on Amazon shows that it's not much more than a pack of smokes.

It's April.  Isn't the AC running full-time yet?

I live high up in the far northern Sierra Nevada mountains...still got a pile of snow behind the house.

  9. A woodpecker has been drumming on my roof at the crack of dawn every day for a month.  I've tried throwing things, squirting it with alcohol, yelling at it with words I can't use here all to no avail.  I found an air pistol in my dad's house while cleaning it and so I shot some bbes at it they make a nice sound but the damn bird ignores them.  Finally found that turning on the air-conditioning fan seems to keep it away so I'm a little hopeful.  If some lady woodpecker would respond I gather it will probably stop and I can stop shortening the aircons longetivity.

  10. Why it would create a bunch of worm holes, that we can use without being crushed into a singularity, that lead to a bunch of Earth like planets we can move to so we don't have to worry about global warming so we can just relocate 7 billion people and their pets and exploit the new planets until their moons collapse and we can move on again...queue the movie in 5...4...3...
