  1. Yes and no. The in-game version was both (1) easy to use on linux and (2) used actually in-game data. That meant that it automatically calibrated for non-stock planet sizes. I play in a 6.4x system with OPM, meaning that both the new and old planets aren't where they are meant to be. Calculating and moving all of that orbit data into some external tool is very tedious.
  2. I've commented out all the volumetric cloud layers from kerbin. For me at least, launches are about physics and piloting, not pretty clouds. If I wanted to fly in clouds I'd play X-plane. I've left them in place on other planets because the physics load there is much much less. Launch is the most demanding part of KSP in terms of cpu/gpu usage. And if you are playing on plus-sized kerbins, launches easily take 5-10 minutes. KSPRC and EVE are great mods. I really enjoy them. But my machine cannot afford clouds during launch. If Proot is reading this, I would suggest distributing an alternative config without the clouds on kerbin, or at least less of them. That will get more people using KSPRC.
  3. I've been playing around with KSPRC and Ven's Stock Part Revamp. I've managed to get the clouds down to a level that doesn't tank my fps on every launch. I go through a period of 25-30 when in the clouds, but it smooths out after that. So here are some early-game pics. The craft are a combination of Ven and HGR textures, but everything else is KSPRC. Mun seems to have cities but that is likely an error on my end.
  4. No MJ, no CKAN ... I'm trying all sorts of things but I think I'll just play without remotetech for a while until I remember how I solved the problem last time. But thanks.
  5. I just gave it a try and it looks great, but I've taken a serious FPS hit (~60 down to ~30fps). I ditched scatterer (its never been good to me) but the EVE configs were the killer. Reverting back to AnyCPUs eve configs and I'm back at 60. I'm now in the process of finding some middle ground between BoulderCo and KSPRC. Update:I had to ditch EVE altogether. It just wasn't worth the fps drop. The visuals are nice from orbit, but disappearing into a fog for half the launch didn't look good. Kerbin, the skybox and everything else still look great, but the could were too much for my machine.
  6. I've been playing around with RemoteTech for a few days now and am butting my head against a problem. The flight computer simply won't hold orientation. It looks like it throws the craft in the general direction that it should, but is unable to hole the direction once there. Sometimes it will hold for a few seconds, but most of the time it just wont' engage. Does this mean anything? It sounds familiar, like a problem I ran into with remotetech over a year ago, but I am not sure. [LOG 18:43:14.506] RemoteTech: Loading Flightcomputer from persistent! [WRN 18:43:14.543] [Part]: PartModule ModuleRTDataTransmitter at longAntenna, index 6: index exceeds module count as defined in cfg.
  7. That depends on your definition of "vacation". It may be relaxing for those on salary, but for those paid by the hour or who are contractors "vacation" may seem more like "lay off" if they aren't getting paid. It is not normal for an entire organization to take time off. Those left behind to keep the lights on, for them having everyone else gone is probably not very relaxing. And at a small tech company, having the bosses disappear for even a few days makes everyone nervous. Big decisions are made while away, decisions that might affect those who didn't take time off.
  8. Not really. Sandbox is not simply KSP without the tech tree. I cannot stand career mode and instead play science-only. That's great, but I often would like other aspects of career such as pilot skill levels or building upgrades. Frankly, I get a little insulted when I click on buildings that are "closed". I want them open. I just don't want to grind contracts all day. So I understand someone wanting to play career without the tech tree. Maybe he wants the challenge of fulfilling contracts without the bother of grinding out the tree.
  9. Neither. In the modern world they aren't even employees. These are contractors or some other non-employee employee. "Laid off" is something from the days when people could expect to come back and/or situations involving mass firing. People today are never fired. The contract with their shell company isn't renewed. I often complain to the CEO of my shell company, but the emails to him keep landing back in my inbox.
  10. SLOW! I've been playing KSP for years, have done everything imaginable, have build my own parts and have debugged other people's mods .... and this is the first time I've noticed that F4 does anything.
  11. "Putting a rover in a box is a standard requirement imho" Really? I cannot think of any realworld rover that landed in a box. They all land on either atop some platform or hanging below a skycrane, both of which aren't difficult in KSP. My SOP is to hang the rover underneath the lander, using radial jets on a pancake-like fuel tank, then either hand on legs attached to the tank or land directly the rover wheels.
  12. Yup. A few days ago I mentioned little inconsistencies in public statements. This is another one. No serious company would use such a signature. Official statements should make is clear who is doing the talking. If not from an individual, it should be clear exactly who stands behind the statement. Who are the founders? Are they also the owners? Have the owners endorsed this? Is this a Star Trek joke? Any outside company evaluating Squad will notice such things. It is suggestive of a lack of review process. Funny pseudonyms are fine in forum posts, not official statements.
  13. Well. I did say "everything runs" ... not that I was using each and every bit. For compatability, at the moment KSPRC is just a pile of nice textures in my texture replacer directory. The planets all look great. The sun flares and skybox are there, but rather hidden by the distant object mod. The rocket/smoke plumes were not rendering, so I removed them. I don;t use scatterer (it hates my rig) or planetshine (just haven't bothered). So those compatability files weren't used.
  14. Or ... talk about it now because as soon as they get back the axe will fall. Perhaps this is the one window where we won't have to go to 4chan or somethingawful to discuss these issues.
  15. Yes. Everything runs. All is well. I posted these pick in the 64k threat yesterday. It would look even better with real plumes and/or planetshine.
  16. Exactly. And it prevents foreign companies from sending cheap workers into the US/canada ... or even between states/provinces that have different wage rules.
  17. Much depends on where the work was actually done, not where the employer is standing. I think anyone working for squad from the US/Canada/Europe should take a close look at their local minimum wage laws. They cannot be waved away just because the employer is elsewhere. Many a foreign employer has been bitten by this when running employees in the US.
  18. Oh so many problems. I'd be most worried about the exhaust from the reverser being sucked back through the intake. This is one reason you never see jets trying to back up. Reversers only work with a headwind to keep the intake clean. But a couple military transports do in fact use reverser in flight as a sort of active airbrake on steep decent.
  19. Or marry/be born into the correct family. Nasa is a prestige government agency. A not-small number of employees are very well-connected. If they don't have relatives in the agency itself, they have family high in government/military circles. They are certainly highly educated and qualified, but there are lots of highly-educated and qualified people in this world. Inevitably, the ones that survive the interviews and security checks end up being well-connected. The conflation of "security" as cover for nepotism is a serious problem in the US fed atm. A much easier route for an outsider would be to work for a contractor ... normally headed by a well-connected person.
  20. The textures are from KSPRC - Renaissance Compilation (via texture replacer). The clouds are from the Environmental Visual Enhancements mod (EVE). Then the skybox is dimmed because of the distant object enhancement mod. I didn't do anything fancy beyond that. The whole thing is running on a 3-year-old linux box with 8gb of ram and a mid-range graphics card. It would probably look even better with planetshine. But this is still 64k. Down below 160km things get blurry fast.
  21. I think the cloud height "bug" works. There are times when it is out of place, but I think more often than not it gives an interesting 3d depth to the atmosphere.
  22. Never. Not once. Patreon isn't meant to support people in established situations. Perhaps the devs are underpaid. OK, but that isn't because Squad lacks the funds. So while I want them to earn more, I don't want to subsidize that management decision not to pay an employee. Patreon is meant for people who are not already working for large corporations, people whose underpayment isn't anyone's choice. I like KSP, but I also liked TheAvengers. I don't send money the people who acted as extras in that movie. To do so would only be to support the system of underpayment with which I strongly disagree.
  23. Lol. Look at the job market these days. There are plenty of people who are "under-employed" and living off of savings and/or supportive families. I find it in no way shocking to hear that a company hired someone at a flat rate for an allegedly part-time job and then demanded dramatically more work/time (and not technically a hire as it's probably a contract). Furthermore, it isn't unusual for someone hang on to an inefficient gig either to not "be fired" or out of some sort of loyalty. A great many people are brought up on the idea that one should work hard no matter what. At least he was paid something. Entire industries (film/TV) are build on the back of legions of unpaid interns.
  24. The OP is probably the first person I've seen who's opinion on career mode actually changed with 1.1. Most everyone I talk to has hated career mode, at least the contracts side, from day one. For me it was hour one, minutes after I appreciated the idiocy of hardcoded procedural contracts. But other people seem to love the grind (mobile gamers?). So to see someone whose opinions has changed only recently is novel.
  25. There is benefit. Squad is only ever going to react to the community, to their customer base. Us calling them out on their problems may well get them moving on fixes. They have/had the cash to bring in pros. They chose not to. There is a chance that pressure from the community might cause them to alter course. The only other option is wait-and-see ... which hasn't been going well. There is only so much time.
