Built a solar skimmer heat shield ship with a thermometer and transmitter. Everything except part of the radiators was occluded by heat shields. I expected the RTGs to blow at some point, and had backup power. Then the thermometer exploded.

Also, I don't actually think heat shields occlude from solar heat. Correct me if I am tremendously, horribly wrong.

There is definitely radiative heat in 1.05. It's why SAS is following the sun.

Maybe they could have higher tech versions (deeper down the tech tree) of the science instruments that can withstand higher temps (and higher impacts, and have lower masses, & etc.), but you need to unlock them?

It's weight is 0.01 t. I'm no math expert but if my calculation is right, it's 10 kilos (22 pounds). That's the weight of a huge jug of wine where I'm coming from. I'm starting to suspect that Kerbals use the thermometer parts to smuggle booze to space..

Sure. But I have the feeling the KSP one has like 9.9 liters more alcohol that it would require to function..

My guess would be it's 9.9kg of sophisticated electrooptical equipment. Its not easy to get telemetry from kitchen thermometer you know. I imagine proper kerbal way would be something like polaroid camera, optical scanner and analog OCR system. Also some device compensating for temperature changes so that whole thing remain calibrated, which could be easily controlled by  thermistor :-)

You may joke but when I worked at an engine test facility many years ago some of the older members of the team remembered when the data logging system was a room full of mercury manometers and a camera

Were you just passing through the solar atmosphere and going back up to high space? That's not so bad compared to some other stuff I've seen people do. Do the words "Low Sun Orbit" scare you much? XD
