Different shortcuts for different screen resolutions

I play KSP on a powerful laptop with a relatively low-res screen, but sometimes I plug into an external monitor with much better resolution. 

Is it possible to have different shortcuts that will start the game with different resolutions?

The problem I am trying to avoid is that KSP goes to a black screen when I switch resolution in the Settings screen of the Main Menu and I cannot get out without force quitting.

I already start my game with a shortcut* that runs the game as a fullscreen popup window and forces opengl and hoped I could make it open with my desired resolution as well.

AFAIK, this is not possible in a stock game. Usually, suggesting mods in the 'unmodded support' section of the forum doesn't seem to be a good idea, but I'll do it anyway:

The mod does not provide a shortcut but a handy GUI to switch between different resolutions.

You could make two versions of the settings.ini and then write a script that renames/copies or makes symlinks to the version you want before launching the game.

I don't know how to do this, but I will investigate it a bit. It seems like other settings might change and not be current in both files.

I have a similar situation, I just have shortcuts to the KSP settings file and mechjeb settings file on my desktop that I hand edit before launch if I remember. In the KSP settings I change the resolution between 1920p and 4K and the gui scale from 0.8 to 1.4 depending on the screen resolution. Mechjeb settings get edited to change the gui scale. I wouldn't mind a script, but it just hasn't been enough of a nuisance yet.

Assuming you have enough space for 2 copies of the game and is willing to do so, I suggest making a copy, setting one for low res and one for higher res, and rename the shortcuts for identification perpuses.

But the saved games and other settings would be different.

Yep. But you can always copy and paste the savegames to both copies of the game. After you play.
