KSP Console interstage fairing

Recommended Posts

As far as  I know, fairings don't snap to any object. You should use the R1+X or RT+A button combo to end the fairing where you want it. You can get it close enough to any circular object as to appear attached. However, I'm not sure if this is as effective at reducing drag as a fully encapsulated fairing.

What is an "interstage fairing"? There are decouplers and stage separators, which automatically enclose a component such as an engine or heat shield in a fairing; and there's the payload fairings which are manually drawn to shape.

Both attach top and bottom to circular sections as relevant.

I think you have to turn on "advanced tweakables" in the settings, before you can even construct an interstage fairing. You then need to turn on the "interstage fairing nodes" in the fairing's menu, once you have placed the fairing.

Then you attach the next stage to one of the floating nodes in the interstage fairing. Then you build the fairing. As you create the topmost section of the fairing (just below the next stage), it should allow you to snap the fairing to the size of the bottom-most section of the next stage. However, there are rules about closing the top of a fairing, and those rules also apply to an interstage fairing. To guarantee success, make the diameter of the topmost section of the interstage fairing the same as the next stage above.

I tested this out and it doesn't seem to work in enhanced edition. When you approach the bottom of the next stage, nothing changes. It doesn't snap on, so you have to manually move the cursor as close as you can get it. Then you have to press R1+X to "terminate construction" which ends the fairing there. I suspect this feature is missing from or broken in enhanced edition.
