I think the first interstellar missions you have will be without connection to the KSC because you have to manufacture an antenna like that. One thing that might be cool would be non-decelerating probe flybys to gather information on new systems before sending a full colony ship, in which case you'd probably want a huge deployable array, possibly daisy-chained to multiple sequential probes.
