SSTO design techniques other than parallel fuselages?

Recommended Posts

Any techniques, either modded or stock, for fuelling an SSTO without putting multiple fuselages next to each other? That method works well, but winds up looking a bit silly IMO.

1. Stack fuel tanks to make a longer fuselage

2. Make the fuselage wider by using larger parts

3. Make a composite fuselage from multiple tanks clipped together. It's practically the same thing as having multiple fuselages, but it might look cooler

4. Clip a bunch of fuel tanks into a fairing

5. Use KAL overclocking to reduce or eliminate the fuel consumption of your engines so that you can have whatever fuselage you want with the desired performance

6. Literally just edit either the part .cfg files or craft files in notepad to put as much fuel as you want in your craft without needing to add more parts.

Some people might not know this, but some of the wing parts can actually hold fuel. They start empty by default, but you can right click them like a fuel tank and fill them up. These also have the advantage of putting the fuel mass close to the center of lift.

These wings can hold fuel:

  • FAT-455 Aeroplane Main Wing
  • Big-S Wing Strake
  • Big-S Delta Wing

Early on I made the mistake of overestimating the amount of fuel I needed. With SSTO it is important to get on an ascent profile that allows you to get as high and fast as possible using your jet engines, continually accelerating, before kicking over to rockets. Lugging too much fuel can really hinder your ability to do this. When done right, you can actually get to orbit using a surprisingly small amount of fuel, which should fit comfortably in a single fuselage design. You probably won't go interplanetary using this method (without orbital refueling), but honestly SSTO is not a very practical concept (but still fun to play with :D).

FAR makes the above method a bit easier, as it makes the atmosphere a bit more "slippery".
