  1. That pad explosion; very reminiscent of the Amos 6 failure with the upper portions falling to the ground. Fortunately KSP pad repairs are much quicker.

That Vorpal III rocket is a real brute. I've never put 300 tons into orbit in one go before...

@DunaRocketeer it is cool. I take it the idea is the wings act like giant airbrakes to help shed speed, clever, and nice work fitting the whole bunch in a cargo bay.

I wonder if a two-way wing rather than four-way would be acceptable aerodynamically? That way it could go up in a long cargo bay and avoid the need to assemble it on-orbit, just claw the target and go.

I think a double wing would work well, perhaps spin stabilise on the way down. Four wings ended up being huge overkill, so a stripped down system would be worth having a go at.

  3. I had landed on the Mun and came back. I went to Minmus and came back.

I went to Duna and couldn't get back. I needed to learn docking. Once that was accomplished, the whole solar system opened up. There were other moments, but that was the big point where I 'got it'.

Today I had to perform a proper gravity turn lifting off from Minmus with the first ore payload... 6000 units for the orbital refinery.

With Bill onboard, the mining process took about 15 hours.

    Damn, that thing was heavy!

I feel your pain, I made a similar sort of mining rig for Minmus as well. Even with seven LV-909's, ascents are... stately.

My space station hosted a small utility shuttle today, which delivered life support supplies and crew. Quickly, its arrival was upstaged by a substantially larger vessel: A fuel freighter arrived to refill the station's depot modules.

  5. I've been having fun with my mobile Minmus mining mammoth...

Most of my space travel infrastructure is cheap and reusable, but the cost of hauling propellant from the surface of Kerbin was a big expense. This spacecraft as well as the freighters that shuttle propellant around the Kerbin system now make things much more economical. The one sacrifice to gameplay convenience is the freighter heat shield, which needs to be replaced periodically.

  6. Haven't had much chance to play ksp this week, but that hasn't stopped me from thinking up ideas.

Right now I'm thinking up a plan for an automated mining operation of Minmus. I'm working out the best way to get it done within the capabilities of my current launcher assets. If it works though, I'll cut the cost of getting a large payload to Duna down to about 20,000 funds - half of what it is currently.

  7. For about ten years of game time, I used a rather awkward little mobile ore miner/processor for refueling ships on the surface of Duna. Well, the thing finally krakened out of existence a few weeks back, and now I'm shipping a proper mobile facility to the surface of Duna.

This ship is one of three that refuelled in Kerbin orbit, and delivered crew and components for assembly on the Dunian surface.

  8. Your Frumious rockets really open up the solar system for crewed spacecraft. I'm wondering if you're going to use them to enable an interplanetary mission soon or will you use them to develop infrastructure within the Kerbin SOI?

Either way, looking forward to future installments!

Also, your ships bound for elsewhere would use less fuel when launching from a lower orbit, thanks to Oberth.

Not a rocket scientist here, but I think the Oberth effect is about burning your engines at periapsis (fastest point) rather than the fuel advantages of different types of orbit. Someone feel free to correct :)
