    Note that NASA only succeeded at Apollo due to the singleminded dedication to one goal for all of it's manned spaceflight systems to the point where they sacrificed any form of sustainability.

    With regards to this study, this was a 2003 study that concluded it was plausible that this could be done had NASA adopted DRM 3.0 in the early 2000s.

    You can't take one of the actual ring modules, but there are spaces in the large modules to store smaller modules with their own docking ports that can be brought down by the lander.
