Speculatoin, speculation. More serious speculation: ~600 My may well be enough for the forming of microbial life, from the condensation of the oceans at the time of the solidification of the crust to the first fossil records just before 3.8 by. It may well have been accelerated through a second period of asteroid impacts, known as late heavy bombardment mentioned before, roughly 4.1 to 3.9 by. http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v459/n7245/full/nature08015.html Life forming on earth was a process, supported by the conditions, and the early stages yet have to be investigated. The reason that there is no evidence from the first few hundred my is simply that nothing (or very little) is left, it's not that there was nothing on the way to life and then all of a sudden it's there. That's probably your misunderstanding, @Aethon, oceanic crust since then has been reworked many times (doesn't get older than ~210my), continental crust is weathered away or buried under sediments. But oldest zircons from ~4.3 by support the assumption that the conditions on early earth were not too bad (pls. search science and nature magazines, the papers in there went through a process of peer review before they are published). There is no need for the introduction of aliens that brought life to earth, there is no magic involved, that is, and now i put my opinion clear, creationist propaganda under the coat of science. Oops, out of coffee error ... Nice sunday !

What's the difference ? What if a resistor refuses to resist ? -
Pls. let me add to @PB666 that putting the coat of "science" around unprovable assumptions (probability of life, forming of civilizations, Drake equation) and putting these as "facts" and basis for further statements is, from a scientific viewpoint, misleading. That may have a philosophical value or maybe a sense of mission is involved, scientific insight is limited or even negative. The Drake equation cannot be used to calculate an actual number of communicating civilizations, the factors involved are arbitrary, unknown estimations. It's a playground, nice for discussions. And it can be used to lure patrons into donations for search programs, and that's probably what it was meant to be, less scientific more political. Sorry, i meant no disrespect, i know it's sometimes difficult to not being taken in by all that "information" at our fingertips ... Peace :-)

I'm not that much into alien explorers and terraforming cause compared to earth history aliens are a pretty young occurrence; they exist roughly since the beginning of the last century (how comes ?) :-) But i'm a bit into earth history, enough to judge wikipedia articles on the subject. Prokaryotic life (e. g. Cyanobacteria) is present since not less than 3,5 billion years, probably 4.1, since the beginning of the archaean (stratigraphic table), performing photosynthesis (without oxygen). This is life with a metabolism, not just glibbering molecules. I'm as sorry as possible, but aliens were (and are) not needed for the process. :-)

Hi, i hope i didn't get that totally wrong: body temp. is reduced by 5-10 degrees Fahrenheit, the article says something about 32-34 degrees celsius storage :-) temp. That survivable ? Edit: as far as i understand cooling a body to 34°C has been done before for a few days due for medical application. It's survivable. Doing so for the duration of a journey to mars is a thought but nobody really knows nothing about the outcome and side effects (nutrition, infections, ...). It's a nice thought but i'm sure if you ask the boss of SpaceWorks he'll reject demonstrating it :-) Not every bear survives it's hibernation ;-)
-
As far as i understand they lower the body temp. by just 5-10 degrees Fahrenheit. The persons are unconscious. Like a hibernating polar bear or a turtle. If i'm not totally wrong a frozen body is dead as a fish stick. Frozen cells are badly damaged (water expands, causing them to burst) and if it thaws it'll soon start to .... smell.

... yet. New techniques (interferometry) and telescopes might reveal more information in the future. For now we have to live with the information you compiled for us :-)

That is actually a horror scenario. Implanting chips will be invented for the sake of sanity, humanity or whatever goodwill you put in there. And it'll soon be abused for terror prevention, tax hunting or whatever control mechanism you put into in. Not my favorite outlook into the future ... And i heftily object: whithout technology a human is still a human, capable of making tools and surviving even in adverse conditions. The fact that certain folks have unlearnt the ability (like the lady, equipped for a hike, that sadly died in the apalaches) doesn't mean that others still can try (the young japanese boy that survived for a week in the woods). To put it very easy: toolmaking is what archaeologically defines the gender homo ("human") 'cause the tools came upon us through time. But this goes further, it opens up an interface that the individual cannot control any more. How long will it take until first government decides that an implant is mandatory for everyone ? For dogs it already is (in many countries) ... :-/ btw.: What about human genome: with all that missing selection our genes are probably not improving ... i don't think even the most benevolent technology can counter that, or can it ?

Already named my children after orcs from gothic iii. Have to make new ones ...

How To REALLY Get Angry At Space Science Deniers
Green Baron replied to NeoMorph's topic in The Lounge
Yes, that has a religious touch. Flat earthers or earth centrics are harmless and not as numerous as the evolution deniers and intelligent designers. They should have our attention cause they try to influence education. Hope that's not too political ... -
El Nino, just left, ... will have some in 6/7 years. Sorry .... and even then i can't guaranty if he'll do the job right at your place. Maybe ... his sister ... knows something about keeping things dry ? Alltogether: "The chances of anything coming from mars are a million to one he said" "The chances of anything coming from mars are a million to one .... but still they cohome" dadadaaa.dadadummdadadumm.dadadaaa.dadadummdadadumm..... :-) Edit: i doubt we can expect a blueprint for whatever, a threat or salvation from aliens ...

It's 3d-representation of a molecule, right ? But i don't know which one, so cancel the cooked ... Edit: an amino acid ?
-
It's not a map of galactic civilizations :-)
-
Omega ? :-)) Edit: nevermind, i got it ...
-
Well, up to now nobody can really tell wether life is unique, rare or common. The basic molecules might as well be a common thing, as is water and oxygen, and maybe as are planets in the habitable zone(tm). Maybe there is a window for possible communication between civilizations of let's say 200 years from the invention of radio-coms to the self destruction in war or pollution on the one side or becoming so self confident and satisfied that they simply don't care about others on the other side. But this concept would mean that civilizations have to be very close to each other in a galactic scale, just to get aware of the other before one side leaves the window. Ok, this is not 100% serious and not my idea, it's (science)fiction (Stanislaw Lem), and it reeks of the 80s ... :-)

Yep :-). Earth is not "optimal" for us, organisms have adapted in a proper way to to the conditions. Not "optimal", because then a small change would result in a distinction, just "sufficient". And with the freedom of changing "little things" every now and then so that changes in the conditions don't effect everyone. If we want to go interstellar (or even interplanetary) we have to take "our" conditions with us, with the help of technology. In my opinion that step does not secure the species, when cut off of technological supply that technology will sooner or later fail, killing the travelers. I assume there are no "replicators" that fabricate worn out hightec things and that the travelers cannot take the earths raw materials and fabrication chains with them). Let us assume that are not that many possibilities to create sentient/intelligent/mobile beings as a result of an evolution because the available elements are the same (i know life forms based on different bases are imaginable but not as effective as what earths evolution has breeded out, but i'm prepared for being corrected). Let us further assume that any travel faster than light is pure fiction. In this case i don't see any paradoxon: others, civilized or not, may exist (i think they do) but the distances between "neighbors" are too far and too long. Technology will fail, radiation will kill the travelers or sterilize them. Maybe newly planned telescopes will tell us more in the next decades.

I think it's too late, but i don't care.

Morning. Sounds frustrated ... but welcome here. Fear not, moderators here are quite effective at keeping the peace (without weapons). As for duna: if you can make minmus you'll make it to duna, there are so many detailed instructions and samplecrafts (just search), in a few days you'll have a proud kerbal standing on duna (or ike). -
I'm not content with the situation since 1.1, and i just don't play ksp right now (because of bugs and partly because of squads attitude towards removing them). But i wouldn't shout it out loud if i'd really quit and bother others with my decision. The danger of loosing my face when crawling back one day is too high. Like with a girlfriend, i wouldn't make a big scene i'd just hit the road.

Besides Orbiter i play Trainz since yesterday. Very relaxing cause one dimensional docking :-) But pricey ...

Found someone who thinks KSP is part of a grand conspiracy

Helfen Sie mir mit meinem Einkauf. Sicher, sicher. But that makes no sense at all. Noone uses "heil" in germany these days as a means of calling someone. In that case "heil" means something like "hail", sounds very antique, an invocation, like greeting a roman cesar or so ... probably that's why it was used by the nazis. You probably used a translator and that gave you the adjective "heil" which means "healed" or "repared", someone/something is "heil" when it has healed / was repaired. Just wanna keep up german language, which is that of Geothe, Schiller and Kant, the age of Aufklärung (elucidation ?). But nowadays we use many expressions from the language of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck ;-) duck and cover :-) Edit: Forgot the noun "das Heil" which is sth. like salvation/sanity ... Editedit: Hail probe ! Heil Sonde ! ... sounds strange in german :-) -

That guy is a believer, not a scientist. He wouldn't even listen. Actually, it's impossible to convince a believer with arguments, he'd rather convince a scientist (educated to think about alternatives) than vice versa. You can stand him up at the rim of grand canyon and he'll proclamate that this is the edge. The other side ? Doesn't exist ! In his world there (probably) is no solar system. That's all garbage, invented to distract "us" so that "they" can easier take over the (chubby :-)) world. A few days weeks ago an elder lady tried to convince me that the ptolemaic view is the right one and the earth is in the middle and one day soon we'll all see. I tried to explain that Ptolemaeus didn't work well, discarded obvious data which didn't fit and encouraged his pupils to do the same. A no go even for the times at the end of the antique world, when 400 years earlier Eratosthenes already had accurately calculated the earths circumference. And that Ptolemaeus view mainly came to some sort of an "official view" after the end of the middle ages to strengthen the church's position against all those newfangled stuff like Kepler, Kopernicus and so on ;-) But she wouldn't even listen. There is no way to convince a believer :-) -
Not on my roof, the roof of your plane ... i mean upside down :-) No more disputes, you have won. And i got cantab totally wrong ... sorry jje64.
-
I see, thanx. So 0 AoA means 0 lift ? (Have no ksp installed here so cannot try)

If KerikBalm is the aerospace professor he is in grave danger of ending up on the roof in the first turn cause he wouldn't want to counter The Force(tm) .... "but it worked in KSP and Wikipedia said it would, too !" Sorry couldn't resist, don't take it too serious, don't want any trouble with noone, ok ? If you need revenge make a fool out of me ...
