For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread
Green Baron replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Err ... is this a philosopher's thought about the real life representations of logical units ? I mean, handwriting is size independent analogue, storing characters on any computer takes place in digital format, regardless of size (well, less then 5*5 pixels makes no sense). A dot (pixel or fragment) can have many bits to describe it .... but you know all this so i just stay unsure what you mean ... -
imo, the ISS is as well a nice example that cooperation (even if one party plays a lead role) is better than controversy.

Random Science Facts Thread!
Green Baron replied to Grand Ship Builder's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Reviving this thread :-) An attempt to find the oldest animals (apart from Ediacaran bio which still lacks undisputed classification). Article, but pay-walled ... tl, dr: Earliest animals (sponges) may date back to 660Ma, into the Cryogenian and pre-Ediacaran, derived indirectly from biomarkers (sterane lipids) whose origin can be connected to demosponges. critique: There is no undisputed pre-Cambrian fossil record of sponges, despite them having silica based skeletons. Also, it is not clear if sponges really are the only explanation of the finding. -
So, "Nope", a ballista does not have to be propelled by gravity. But "Yep", it can be driven by a bow made of leaf springs. -------------- Which reminds me of a funny or(logic or, can be both) interesting thing a friend once told me. When she studied computer science, there was a professor who lectured on propositional logic. In his speech he appended german "nicht wahr ?", "not true ?" - which is best translated as "isn't it ?" - to every second sentence and sometimes in between. Which made it difficult to follow his examples because, in propositional logic, it negated everything he said before and, in speech, there are no brackets .... :-)

There are quite a few different forms of siege engines and catapults, driven by gravity as the one in the picture, torsion of for example leather straps or by tension unloading with a bow. The throwing component of a the ballista type thingy is actually a bow. Which can theoretically be made of leaf springs. It is only, steel didn't exist and iron is too brittle for that.

One looses less numbers in a limited dial length with 999 than one does with 112, at least with the ancient way of dialing (the dialing technique has a name i forgot). But i don't think this a thing these days any more, as in the modern times the whole number is transmitted before it is evaluated. [trying to be funny]Like, i was told that usually one mounts a horse from the left side and that's why our British colleagues still drive on the left side. But like the ancient dialing, it is not a thing any more these days. [/trying to be funny]

Not that much to those who have traveled, i'd say. I still recall the 70s and 80s in Europe, there were signs with numbers of the country one entered at the side of the road when one crossed the borders via main roads. Anyway, the normal mortal doesn't need to call it that often ...

112, unified over (most of ?) Europe. Why ?

Sorry that IS fake news and absolutely untrue. The forest is saved, the energy company has withdrawn, the IPCC report is not "terrifying", but alarming to act now, and nobody in Germany shouts for nuclear power, not even the energy companies because it is too expensive. "Environmental Progress" is an American thing (USA), probably propaganda related. A "Nuclear Pride Fest" in Munic is not about to take place, they'll be laughed out of town, i can tell you. In contrary has the German division of the WWF just released a study that comes to the conclusion that with just 2.5% of the available area in Germany the whole country could be run on renewable energy alone. Sorry, i repeat, fake news, which is a complaint. I mean a complaint. ------------------------ Cool :-) I read your thread on it. Seems like you're addicted. I only jumped once out of a plane, with a friend who needed a volunteer for his license. But i paraglided for more than ten years. Have fun with your hobby, should you make one out of if :-)

Found a somewhat up-to-date study or better collection of ideas on interstellar travel. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/323810028_Concepts_for_Deep_Space_Travel_From_Warp_Drives_and_Hibernation_to_World_Ships_and_Cryogenics Tl:dr: Colonizing other bodies outside our solar system is many hundred years away. Practicing in our system would be the first step. Interstellar travel stays a fiction for now ... -

Yes, you did. With calling me "not well informed" and presenting me a youtube video of a hopes and dreams company. After i states that freezing is not an option in a hard scifi environment. And you keep on attacking me despite me trying to deescalate. And i didn't even initially respond to you, but to @Spaceception. You keep on questioning my being able to express myself, being ill informed and pedantic. Well, i can accept the latter ;-) But only that ! The rest is just not very friendly. Maybe you found my "no youtube accepted" rude and dismissive, i already said that i am sorry if that was misunderstood. Hard scifi needs a basis that should be discussed in science as being feasible, on the horizon, experimentally worked on. Like fusion energy for example, though it is maybe a generation or more away. But as we have seen interstellar travel is hard to imagine without some or even a lot of handwaving. Peace ? -

But i did know about it, where is the problem ;-) About freezing being impossible, therapeutic cooling not being feasible for prolonging lifes (we have been through that in this forum before), nutrition being a basis for avoiding early aging or prolonging it to >100 (but not much) years. Because it takes place. I really do not see the problem you are having with me. And i ask to stop your attacks on me. -

Interstellar travel is hard to imagine with hard scifi. Are we giving up that condition, do i understand that (at least that ;-)) correctly ? I know we are getting slightly esoteric here, but if the brain works, there is metabolism and there is aging. So, if we keep them in a state where we can fill them in we'll risk them getting seriously sick or dying of old age (despite optimal no-problemo nutrition ;-)), correct ? I think it'll be better to go with your first suggestion, human - machine - human transition. Saves life support for centuries and also makes for a nicer story. Like girl wants to go back to human, boy wants to stay machine ... Not responding to personal attacks any more ... -

Yes. And what happens to humans when they hibernate ? Well, yeah, until proven to be wrong. Yes, it is a problem. Read the paper. Edit: a problem that could be overcome to prolong life to 105-110 years. Which already happens in some areas. There live a few (not many) >100yr old here. Personal stuff with missing arguments ... what to do with it ? I am sorry, but i am not the one here who is looking for a fight ... -

Cool, but i doubt that slowly turning in ones own thoughts leads to new insights. Unconscious people don't think, or do they ? Would they want to go "back" ? A drop of 5W15 in the morning instead of shower and teeth brush and breakfast ... but then again, in order not to chase off the aliens they visit a biological appearance might be wiser ... Yep. You could probably sell the plot line to Elon ... ;-) -

Ok, if you give up the hard scifi then go for it. It is the only reason i came up with it. Therapeutic cooling has nothing to do with prolonging life or slowing metabolism. though the latter is an intended effect. It is, if i understand it right and i tried briefly, to avoid further damage and secondary effects for hours (not centuries) for accident victims for example. It is not a technique to prolong lives, which it doesn't, in contrary, it is principally a life threatening condition. But, no problem, if you do fusion driven spaceships with very high ISPs, get all out of a human lifespan, and do some chemistry to slow aging, then who am i to critize or scorn :-) -

Man, what do you want from me ? Where did i say that ? I said: freezing and thawing a human body alive is not hard scifi and i stand to that. And i said that, apart from hopes&dreams, there is no serious work on freezing a human. You presented me papers on therapeutic cooling (5-7 degrees below normal) that i quickly browsed over and had to dismiss because they do not bring us forward here, not because i want to make you angry (i do not if that is your impression). But let us see, maybe we find a solution ... -

Yeah, i read the 200 - 250 years as well as a theoretical limit. Cooling: well you either stay in the safe area of let's say 33°C, but people will age, or you go lower to lets say 20°C and risk damage. Anyway, aging is not stopped. They'll waste away anyway. -

"Mild hypothermia with temperature reduction of several degrees Celsius is as effective as modest or deep hypothermia in providing therapeutic benefit without introducing collateral/systemic complications" This is about therapeutic cooling, not freezing, if i read it right. We have discussed similar things here in the past, iirc. ? "in mild hypothermia group, the hypothermia was reduced to the hypothermia range (33.0±1.0) centigrade " As well, cooling. And the cooled pigs had changes to their brain. Same, it is about regional therapeutic cooling a few degrees below normal. "The available clinical data suggest that regional and systemic hypothermia is a relatively safe and feasible initial treatment modality for patients with acute SCI(*) ..." Maybe invent a process for your story, like someone has found a way to avoid cell damage and keep the brain connections intact for the period you envision (800yrs) e.g. by exchanging the body liquids for something that doesn't change volume depending on heat, as well as can serve as a surrogate for the original body liquids. And/or store brain apart from the body and re-pot it later ... ? But this isn't hard scifi any more, rather (cheap) horror genre ? Edit: scrub it. Take @tater's suggestion if it works for the timeline ;-) -

Green Baron replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I tried (before, not in the last months), but there are none. I am not claiming anything. I am just saying that currently there is no possibility to freeze and revive a human body. And there is nothing i see on the horizon to do so. Single cells or microtome slices, yes. Even an organ for a few hours. But apart from that ... Hey, we don't need to make a quarrel out of that. If you are willing to accept it in your scifi story then why not. I'm only saying freezing won't work in a hard scifi environment. Well, it'll work to pimp up the underway cuisine ... :-) "Formal dress is optional" ;-) -

Well, if we can have a regular scientific article about the hows and the probabilities, then i will revoke ;-) Youtube does not count. Arcor is a hopes&dreams company/foundation/whatever. The papers cited are, well "Rejuvenation Research" ... hmm, is that serious or made in-house ? :-) Look at that list: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term="Rejuvenation Res"[jour] To me, it sounds pretty ... esoteric. Like ads for a new anti aging cream. Hey, i am just trying to help you with the "hard scifi" condition ;-)
