  1. I'm not asking for best reactor, I'm asking for engine that has best thrust per MW of power. I tested all fission engines with built-in reactors. Assuming, that kN/MW performance doesn't change with size/upgrade level of engine and propellant has flat thrust multiplier regardless of engine/reactor combination. Using Hydrogen, as all engines use this propellant except EM Drive. http://imgur.com/a/AKIf5 Here are 2 engines with builtin fusion reactors: http://imgur.com/a/tADGG 3 thermal engines connected to molten salt reactor. http://imgur.com/a/SOWTP 2 charged particle engines connected to MFC fusion reactor: http://imgur.com/a/iVIRF And here all engines, that need electricity to run. http://imgur.com/a/PWQvX
  2. So Timberwind requires lowest mass of engine/reactor/generator/radiator/reactor fuel tank complex to achieve given thrust. (kN of thrust per ton of engine complex), right? On other end there is EM drive with probably lowest kN/ton performance. And what engine is best at converting megawatts of power to kiloNewtons of thrust? Standalone Thermal Turbojet? Rocket launch nozzle? Engine with builtin reactor? What propellant is best for each engine, when it comes to converting power to thrust? Is kN/MW ratio same for given engine and propellant, when it comes to size and type for engine/reactor complex? Is 1 MN of thrust per MW of power engine/reactor complex even possible?
  3. 2 questions: What engine in what mode gives you most thrust per megawatt of reactor power - most kN/MW. Megawatt is megawatt, doesn't matter if its raw thermal energy from fission reactor, charged particles from fusion reactor or electricity from exotic reactor. What engine/reactor combination has highest TWR per ton of combined reactor/generator/engine mass? For example I picked this engine and that reactor (with generator if its fusion reactor or electrical engine) or engine with built in reactor and for example it has TWR of 1.0
  4. Why we can't scale fission engines and structural parts?
  5. Ah so MHD is two in one generator. When it is better to use MHD, than 2 separate generators? I know reactor has to generate both of energy types to make MHD actually useful. Is MHD lighter or heavier than Charged Particles + Thermal generator?
  6. What is difference between magnetohydrodynamic generator and 2 other generators?
  7. Is here 1 EC/s one kw? Wonder how it will go with @FreeThinker Interstellar ISRU stuff
  8. Well reactors directly connected are too vertical... I would have to downscale them and put in cargobays Reactors and radiators are CPU hogs.
  9. When we will get engines perfect for VTOL on Earth/Venus? If I wanted to build powerplant, that powers both nearby ships and far away missions, then I should install 3 different beam generators/emitters on it?
  10. So thermal receivers, that turn beamed power into thermal energy, can work with any beam source?
  11. Well ARCJET and VASMIR can use atmosphere in Interstellar mod. and I just wanted to know what is speed barrier for aircraft/spaceplane - when they have to switch to rocket engines (those fastest only), if they want reach space. Electrical engines are more like "what if" inspired by Interstellar mod.
  12. Well for VASMIR I was thinking about static pressure in range of 1 - 1000 pa. Also powered by fusion power plant either directly or trough microwave network.
  13. What about exotic designs like VASMIR or ARCJET just like in @FreeThinker Interstellar mod? Can these work at even higher speeds and altitude than SCRAMJET? (they would be inefficient at low speed/altitude) Can magnetic fields protect engine insides against very hot air flow and make engine work?
  14. Well my question is: How fast aircraft can travel with these engines before they fail due to high dynamic pressure/low static pressure/high temperature.
  15. Can I have suggestion: Make engines while on air-breathing mode and active air scoops overheat, when going at very high speeds. It seems to be weird that I can use Atilla or Vasmir or air scoops, when going at 10 mach and for example 15 km without them overheating. Also radiator coolant pipes should leak some heat to parts, that are between radiators and wasteheat generators. I don't think irl they are 100% efficient - I bet when they are transporting liquid/gas 3600 K hot you could fry something by placing something at them Edit: If you downscale thermal turbojet, then it instantly overheats and explodes. I connected it to molten salt reactor. Here's craft: https://ufile.io/90615 - a 0.625m molten salt on uranium burnup mode powered rover. It has thermal turbojet to achieve higher speeds. Why ARCJET is so inefficient? I want to make small VTOL, but using 1.25. fusion reactor generating 325 MW of power arcjent on atmospheric mode only generates 4 kN of thrust. To lift and hover my 4 ton hovercraft at 0 vertical speed I need around 40 kN - that is 40 kW of power.
  16. KSP AJE mod allows engines to run at up to 5 mach and 25 kilometers, KSP Interstellar mod allow higher speeds and altitudes for air breathing mode. What are limits for real world good old propeller / turbofan / turbojet / ramjet / scramjet / future (KSPI Interstellar) engines?
  17. Shouldn't radiators "leak" wasteheat to surrounding parts for example at 0.1% - 1% of total removed wasteheat? For example if my ship produces one GW of wasteheat, then 1 - 10 MW of it should be transferred to parts being in patch between radiators and wasteheat gerating parts due to inefficiencies of coolant transportation. Also what if I land huge starship in water/ Titan lakes, that produces for example 100 GW of wasteheat?
  18. Well that's why I asked Ferram in thread, if he's going to do something with 1.2 stock dynamic/static pressure failures.
  19. Doesn't FAR have aerodynamic failures, when going too fast, while doing steep turns? I think dynamic and static pressure structural failures would be covered by @ferram4 anyway - FAR and Deadly Reentry make atmosphere great again, but they are covering different bases. Deadly Reentry is when space plane with AJE engines have FAR too high speed for them to function With RSS I should test high speed airplanes and see what happens if you descend below 20 km while keeping speeds above 5 mach (theoretical limit for air breathing engines)
  20. Let him finish features before he releases this mod for 1.2
  21. Apparently there is negative mass bug again. No idea what causes it. Also power managment fails to balance power properly - its 50 MW off. Also hydrogen consumption by reactors is so low, that you can just use scoops on hydrogen sucking mode to fuel them. Why scoops cant store gasses without liquifing them?
  22. What is max distance for beam network energy transmission before beam gets too dispersed? I know I should use UV light and as big receivers as possible.
  23. There is small issue with beam fusion reactor (this one with integrated charged particles generator): It doesn't have hydrogen gasifier with it, and there are no parts to change liquid/gas state of substances. I'm using latest mod version.
  24. so what is optimal radiator temperature? Too small area, and EM loses thrust, too large, and EM has less TWR, as radiators adds to mass of ship. So if I have 5m EM engine, larger than 5 EM QSR to fully power EM engine and big radiators, then how big radiators I should have?
  25. Still there is inconsistency (bolded lines) for QSR fuel modes in ReactorFuels.cfg:
