MoeslyArmlis, I would be fine with 5ThHorseman taking over the job if he's interested. Or for that matter, I'd be cool with you taking over if you're interested. The "caveman challenge" is for the cavemen, and all clan members are equals :D Best, -Slashy

How make my rocket more stable ?
GoSlash27 replied to Pawelk198604's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I managed to put satellite with decent amount of fuel, but i have almost no control over it it seems that i can control only when i using engine,
Pawelk, Yeah, I'm not surprised. You don't have any reaction wheels or RCS to play with, so engine gimbaling is your only means of control. You need to unlock a reaction wheel to control your ship in orbit. You will also need batteries to keep it powered. On the bright side, you've made a lot of progress today! You're not flipping during launch anymore. Best, -Slashy -
How make my rocket more stable ?
I tried to do as you told, but the 2 nd stage is unstable now see... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2b9lI7XhBQ Thanks for both of you, i think i let slide on satellite contract until unlock other parts, and try to gain science other way.
Pawelk, You should have better luck with the second stage if you fly the first stage more steeply. If you're above 30km it won't spin on you. You tried to stage at 20 km and that's too low. Good luck! -Slashy -
Alpheratz, If you have to ask, then the answer is no. ;) No mods that will make it easier for you. Caveman is challenging *because* you're doing it the hard way. Also, be advised that I am no longer administering this challenge. If any of the clan would like to take it over, feel free! Best, -Slashy

[SPOILERS] Cool! Easter egg notifications.
GoSlash27 replied to GoSlash27's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Whoa Slashy. Have you been sleeping under a rock? People have been talking about this for over a week. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/139422-List-of-Milestones-World-Firsts http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/139475-Give-World-First-results-a-permanent-home-as-a-tab-in-the-Science-Archive It's not just Easter Eggs that trigger World First achievements, there are a lot more. (And not all eggs trigger a World First.)
Tex, I never saw those threads. I just happened to stumble across this during an exploration mission and didn't recall it having been mentioned before.
You guys do know Google is bringing out driverless cars soon, don'tcha??? yep... only their autopilot isn't called MechJeb..... but its still cheating... isn't it? Go bleat to Google that they shouldn't do this, that its cheating.... go on....
Kiwi, KSP is a single player game. Therefore what does or does not constitute "cheating" is up to the individual player. If someone thinks it's cheating, then it is. If someone thinks it's not, then it's not. With the exception of challenges that stipulate "no MechJeb", whether or not it's cheating is completely subjective; a matter of personal opinion. Why you feel the need to argue with other people about why your opinion is superior to theirs is beyond me, but this matter was laid to rest months ago. Can you *please* just let it rest in peace? How make my rocket more stable ?
GoSlash27 replied to Pawelk198604's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
But it was very small deviation, beside i need to make gravity turn. Does my rocket have any chance reach desired orbit? In old KSP (alpha and beta version) it was so easy :(
Pawelk, No, I don't think that rocket has the DV to reach geostationary orbit. It should be able to make low Kerbin orbit if you fly it gently, though. I still think you should ditch the Thuds. If I were to build a low tech 2 stager to geosynchronous orbit, it would look like this: First stage: LV-T45 with 7 FL-T200 tanks Second stage: Terrier with 3 FL-T200 tanks *edit* After looking at your contract spec, the DV for a GSO launch should be close enough, but 1 small thing: The inclination is 180°! That means you have to launch West, not East. That will cost you another 350 m/sec because you're fighting Kerbin's rotation instead of using it. Best, -Slashy -

If you happen to be within a couple km of an easter egg in career, you get a "world's first" bonus for finding it. If you get one of these notifications, it's a hint to take a look around. Surface samples don't seem to register as a unique biome, tho'. Best, -Slashy

3d printing simply cannot match the cost effectiveness or volume of mass production. It's good for what it does, but it's impractical for cars. Best, -Slashy

How make my rocket more stable ?
GoSlash27 replied to Pawelk198604's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Still had a problem :( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4j-9ueYfi0
Pawelk, That still has too much thrust, not enough fuel, and you're over-controlling it. Keep your t/w on launch at 1.5 or less. Fly it with fine control (caps lock) and you're definitely going to need more DV in the first stage (about 1800 m/sec) so the second stage won't flip. As it sits, it wouldn't make orbit even if it did fly straight. Best, -Slashy -
Subscript/superscript is already available in IPS4 (checked from the test site), even easier to use than on this forum. Full Latex support isn't present currently. It may come later, as additional features will certainly be added. But please know a project to add Latex to this forum (vB4) was already in development more than one year ago, and ultimately was shelved (believe the benefits were not considered as good against the added complication and admin burden). Let's hope for IPS4, Latex could be a simpler addition to make.
diomedea, Got it. Thanks! -Slashy

How make my rocket more stable ?
GoSlash27 replied to Pawelk198604's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Pawelk, You have too much thrust and no tailfins. You'd be better- off to remove the Thuds and replace them with fins. If you do it right, you won't need to touch the controls at all through the launch phase. For the upper stage, the solution is actually in the lower stage: Moar DV. If you are over 30 km when the first stage burns out, there's not enough air pressure left to flip the upper stage on decoupling. *edit* Try this one: I made it with all parts I see you using or assume you already have. Mods, I looked through all these pages and I didn't see an answer to this question (apologies if I missed it): Will the new forum have LaTeX support? If not, will it have some sort of support for robust mathematical equation formatting? We tend to kick around formulas a lot when discussing rocket science and the old setup was lousy for that. Thanks, -Slashy

Abacus Wizard, I do know how to calculate them, but AFAIK there's no tutorial available for it. Explaining the math gets pretty unwieldy on this forum because it's not well- suited to mathematical equations. Basically... You start with the semimajor axis for both planets. Then you figure out the semimajor axis for the transfer orbit. With that, you have the transfer time from one planet to another. Using that time, you figure out how much the destination planet will orbit in that time. This gives you the alignment phase of the transfer. Given this phase and the relative phase rate, you can work out how often transfer windows happen. For figuring the transfer DV, you need to figure out how much velocity it takes to escape your home planet's SoI and how much DV to do the Hohmann transfer to the destination planet. These are vector-added pythagorean style and then the initial orbital velocity is subtracted. The retroburn at the destination planet is computed the same way. This method leaves a lot of variability due to orbital eccentricities and inclinations and doesn't give a specific date, but it's good enough for government work. A lot of the mods do it this way. How can I reenter safely
GoSlash27 replied to hsnmck's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The recommended workaround for this wasn't mentioned, so I'll post it here: Attach the heat shield with a decoupler. Once you've gotten through the reentry heating and deceleration drops below 2 Gs, decouple the shield. You will slow in plenty of time to deploy chutes after that. Best, -Slashy -
Where the energy of gravity assist comes from ?

Where the energy of gravity assist comes from ?
GoSlash27 replied to Tatonf's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I wonder what the math of gravity assists is. There's got to be an equation that takes into account all of the major factors and spits out "DV"... /too tired to think about it today :( Best, -Slashy -
Using drogues is more promising.
NathanKell, Using drogues would be the first logical solution, but unfortunately they're not available until tech level 6. By the time most people unlock them, they're already doing interplanetary flights. Best, -Slashy
-
the fact that you slow down if you flip the same capsule *prograde* seems to defy common sense
This, and I don't think Squad wants folks smacking into the ground while they're still too fast for chutes due to the heat shield. It's a game play thing. Best, -Slashy
-
Miro Beero, I've seen this bug before. You lose all ability to control your ship, but if you leave it and come back, you suddenly regain control. I think that's what you saw. Best, -Slashy
-
Dfthu, The reason I use transfer windows is the exact opposite of why you don't: I don't overengineer my ships. I design them to meet the mission requirements. Without a transfer window, I have no idea how much DV I need. Without knowing how much DV I need, I can't design my ship. Best, -Slashy
-
Raykados, No docking ports transfer resourses at caveman tech level. You can, however, burn resources from across a docking port. Best, -Slashy
-
I'd recommend Ike for a first career interplanetary expedition. It's easy to reach and doesn't take a lot of DV to land on and has a good science multiplier. Best, -Slashy
Every time I stage the heatshield, it immediately crashes back into the pod and explodes the shield and sep. (I guess I need to turn down the separation force, so it doesn't move that far away before bumping back into the pod)
obsidian_x, I've found that waiting to stage the head shield until deceleration force is under 2G works best. The shield helps decelerate the pod, but doesn't explode. It leaves you with plenty of altitude to make a safe deployment. Best, -Slashy
