  1. It works, but in Stock atmosphere it still won't behave because it thinks the center of lift moves backwards a lot when I twist the wing. It behaves better in FAR, but I'm still struggling with making it fly proper before I post a movie here.
  2. I'll try that this weekend, let's see if that fixes my problem, it sounds logical enough.
  3. I just rebuilt the plane using a lot of B9 parts simply because it looks better than stock. (There's no strict stock requirement in the rules as far as I can see.) In the stock souposphere it flies like a brick the moment you start sweeping those wings, it tumbles towards the side where the wing is swept backward. So I filmed what happens to the center of lift inside the SPH where you can clearly see the center of lift remains in the middle of the plane, except according to KSP it moves backward. This is really what we want in order to gain balance at higher speeds, except I couldn't manage a speed above 160m/s with the current design. Oh and I botched the landing, so this isn't really a worthy entry, just wanted to share my experience, maybe someone else has a good idea on how to fix these problems without adding a whole pile of SAS modules to the craft (which would be wasteful). First I'm going to try it in FAR and see if it responds any better that way and if that doesn't work a rebuild will be required.
  4. It's slightly more complex, Wooks. it's saved in the saves/your savegame name/ships/... other than that you're right, but simply looking in the ships folder will only show the stock vessels (which is a good place to put a ship that you want to use across savegames).
  5. I dunno, I guess so. Mun day it is then! I bet there's someone on this thread can do it in less than half an hour, but it sure isn't me!
  6. Just done the Mun in 46:53 to landing and another 17 seconds to flag planting. Total time: 47:10 Had to land it on MechJeb cuz I ain't that good. With more fuel I'm sure I can do it quicker. Or maybe with more efficiency because a direct ascent at full throttle isn't the best way to spend fuel on this trip. So let's try that again, but limited to terminal velocity on the ascent. So I tried that while I was uploading images and feel short by 10 minutes... Probably just need MOAR boosters. For now though: - - - Updated - - - Type [ imgur ] your albumnumber here without the #0 at the end [ /imgur ] Without the obvious spaces.
  7. It allows one to make smaller or larger variants of stock parts, so tiny nuke engines, or massive ones, larger cargo bays, or smaller ones, etc. etc. It's kinda fun, but horribly crash prone imho.
  8. And if that doesn't work you can always do it EjectoSeato style and put a couple separators on the rearmost bombs to propel them out of the hold with force. If it works with Kerbals, it'll work with bombs, right?
  9. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2935674/Kerbal/Freewing%20Scorpion%203.craft Using a KAX engine and regular gear. Let me know if you have any issues opening it! Landing is a (rap-word here) by the way. Get it low, angle the nose up to kill your vertical velocity without actualy coming to a standstil mid-air, you got ot keep some forward velocity because the prop isn't strong enough to hover, then drop the nose at the very last minute before hitting the ground to land it on all 6 wheels at once. Kill the engine, gently brake. (Stock gear sucks at braking!)
  10. Ah, then I'll likely have to lose the landing gear and the engine and replace them for KAX parts, or stock parts. Going to work now.
  11. I'll rebuild it tonight or tomorrow to fit a KAX engine, but doesn't KAX require Firespitter?
  12. The real deal: the KSP rebuild (stockish): Like stated previously, requires IR and Firespitter. I minimized the amount of parts used from them to the free moving docking washer, a propellor motor and gear. Based on an ACTUAL UAV, that flies in the real atmosphere, really the only reason I put it here even though it's not completely stock. Craft (Uploads may take a while, video is taxing to upload)
  13. When I flew it the first time I never intended to do any such thing, it just happened without my realizing it. In the screenshot I'm gearing up to reach maximum speed at 3000m altitude, so you bet it's been flying in exactly that direction for a while there when I made the screenshot. (I was actualy holding my finger over the F1 button to click as soon as 3000m was reached, the angle insures as high a speed as possible without taking ages to get there.) If you want I can post the craft file and you can try it yourself. Beware though, she becomes difficult at high altitude and speed without the payload.
  14. Seeing Hobbes reminds of a previous craft I built in an attempt to build each and every one of Burt Rutan's strange flying machines. This is isn't it, but rather a stock rebuild that looks similar. Hard enough to get to fly in the stock souposphere, wonder how hard this is in FAR. For your flying pleasure: the Boomerang Jet Ps. I would love to submit a completely different craft, but it requires some mods. It's the craziest flying machine I know and maybe you've seen it before, this is a stock challenge, but I figured maybe you'd want to try. Let me know what you think of this (will require Infernal robotics and Firespitter as a minimum requirement, can't be helped):
  15. Ah, misread you there, I thought it was both cruising and 3Km altitudes. (The trick still aplies though, you can just tilt the cockpit down to get this achievement, you'll just have to keep it in mind in the design phase.) In that case I just gained 20 points, right? - - - Updated - - - Scoring update: More BOOM: (32 - 6) * 12 = 312 points Swift Payback: 103m/s * 0.1 = 10.3 points Engine maintenance: 8 turbojets * 4 = -32 points Part maintenance: 532 part * 0.02 = -10.64 points Destroy VAB: Fail Career switch: Succes = 20 points Service ceiling: 15K = 15 points Field refueling: Succes = 10 points Field rearming: Succes = 20 points Operational ability: 5 points Sub Total: 312 +10.3 -32 -10.64 +20 +15 +10 +20 +5 = 349.66 points (350 points rounded) You feeling lucky VAB? = 10 points Gentle giant = 20 points Total: 350 + 10 + 20 = 380 points (379.66 unrounded)
  16. Loaded her with 2 and a half Orange tanks, still not enough to destroy the VAB with a direct hit. - - - Updated - - - Had to switch to career mode to make it happen and it still took several attempts before I scored the right hit, but once you do it's a spectacle! - - - Updated - - - I wonder about the Gentle Giant achievement: I've never seen any plane with a 5 degree angle at about 12km altitude, maybe that's a little too harsh of a requirement. The only way I could see how is by tilting the cockpit down about 5 degrees, that way it may seem the challenge is beat, but it's technically just a trick to fool the altimeter.
  17. Ermm... You can repack a chute on EVA, so chutes are definitely reusable. Updated my previous post with a new mission report which includes the F3 shot at the end.
  18. That would favor not circularizing. I would say highest kerbin periapsis is a better measurement. I didn't do the whole F3 thing on my run, that rule went up while I was uploading the images, so I'm replacing them with a new run with a periapsis of around 230Km
  19. Introducing the Seagull MK-I, a medium sized watercraft SSTO. In order to get out of the water more quickly and stop wasting fuel I added a small engine to the nose only that can be used to pitch the nose up once the engines are spooled up. This way it's much easier to lift off from the water without building an actual VTOL plane. Providing Image album and Video, it may be a day before the video is up though, connection bandwidth is limited and video is LARGE to upload. Here's the album: In accordance with the new spec: Craft mass: 17.4t Orbit altitude PE: 75.986km Orbit altitude AP: 84.277km
  20. Promised to send this in yesterday, but didn't get around to making a proper album, so here it is a day late. Not quite as big as Jakalth's, but big nevertheless and sorta weird looking. Looks more like a kite than a plane, which has somewhat of a deteriorating effect on the handling without a payload at high altitude, but with the payload she flies nicely up to almost 18K. Reasonable cruising altitude is between 14K and 15K at which height it goes about 650m/s so it takes a fairly long time to get to the peninsula as you can't warp this thing at all at risk of rapid unplanned disassembly and she needs continuous flightpath maintenance, so there's no doing something else, you gotta pay attention. Regardless of the crappy flight caracteristics, she does perform a lot of jobs admirably, though destroying the VAB with this payload isn't going to happen. Even kamikaze style direct hit flight didn't destroy the vab, but maybe that's because it's not career mode? I don't know, I recoded a full on direct hit of the entire payload and that didn't do it. Because of the design it's possible to field-rearm the complete payload minus 2 bombs. (I didn't build the cart right, it might be possible to replace the frontmost 2 bombs, but this cart didn't do it.) Which is a whopping 30 bombs. Due to KSP crashing I didn't get around to filling 6 and only got to 4, but you get the picture when you review the album. Just drive the cart with payload under one of the many docking ports and raise the landing gears to atach it, drop the gear again and detach the cart, drive it back to the replacement payload and repeat. Works a charm, but having over 1000 parts in physics is not helpfull for KSP-stability. Scoring: More BOOM: (32 - 6) * 12 = 312 points Swift Payback: 103m/s * 0.1 = 10.3 points Engine maintenance: 8 turbojets * 4 = -32 points Part maintenance: 532 part * 0.02 = -10.64 points Destroy VAB: Fail Career switch: Succes = 20 points Service ceiling: 15K = 15 points Field refueling: Succes = 10 points Field rearming: Succes = 20 points Operational ability: 5 points Total: 312 +10.3 -32 -10.64 +20 +15 +10 +20 +5 = 349.66 points (350 points rounded) Fun Challenge!
  21. Mission completed with 32 bombs on a refuelable, reloadable plane. Albums tomorrow.
  22. That's quite ok, NBZ, I rovered around a bit as well to find tht second peak and I also experienced the pull from the abyss! Very difficult to drive your rover up to, but not over, the edge there! Too bad the little VTOL-LFO engines disqualify the entry, it's such a nice bird.
  23. There's a stock replacement for them, you find it in the utility tab.
  24. Well done Laye! That's one giant cruiser you got there.
