  1. I was wondering what is the minimum altitude above Kerbin to receive High Kerbin Science. I'm doing a mission (actually right as I am righting this message:cool:) and I want to get as much science as possible. Thanks in advance
  2. This idea actually started from a minecraft mod called Applied Energistics. In it is a concept called 'Spatial IO' wherein you basically capture space and stuff it into a hard drive. One funny thing you can do is capture a person who happens to be inside the spatial cage. This got me wondering...if you had a hard drive or solid state drive large enough, could you suspend a human being in it? Would they survive at all?
  3. I remember seeing somewhere a neat trick for landing on slopes if your lander has a tri-leg design. You angle one of your legs so it is pointing down the slope and lock its suspension.
  4. My coolest kerbals are the pilot duo - Billy-Bobley and Billy-Bobwig (I think...)
  5. The key thing is orbiting is less about altitude, and more about Speed. The point of being in an orbit is you are going so fast sideways that you essentially "miss the ground". It is much easier to obtain enough speed when you are gaining sideways velocity through most of the flight, rather than all of it in orbit.
  6. The MK4 Spaceplane parts has the SCIMITAR engine, which is a beefed up version of the RAPIER - is quite useful!
  7. If you want a longer runway, the mod Kerbinside adds more runways - the one you probably want is the 11km one in the desert (at least I think its 11km...)
  8. I was wondering if it would be possible to get most, if not all of the features within KSP without using the Squad or NASA mission directories - essentially a fully mod KSP.
  9. Hi, I'm trying to build a Lander that can land on Duna, take off again and rendezvous with the mother ship. How much Delta V should I pack on it to achieve this - any advice of building said lander is appreciated as well.
  10. I'm assuming all 3 of your mods benefit from being paired with eachother.
  11. I guess all this will be solved if the world put a price to each energy source. If is clean, it needs to cost less. If is dirty it needs to cost more. /\This right here is pure gold in my eyes
  12. Lets not forget the promising idea of fusion power. Once we build a sustaining fusion reactor, our power problems will diminish by a fair amount.
  13. There's one power source that throughout these pages I haven't seen mentioned yet - RTG's. They're small, efficient, easy to produce and last a very long time. The idea of having HUGE RTG banks powering a country probably isn't feasible, but separating the country-wide grid into many smaller grids, each with their own banks to power that community is slightly more feasible.
  14. Recently I got the contract to take a crew report above a certain Edwise Spot. I built the 2.5m rocket and got that puppy up to orbit. That's when I happened to glace over at the fuel gauge and see that the fuel for the main stage is at 50%! That was when I realised my stupendous error. I had chosen to put RCS on my craft, and to balance the thrusters with the CoM I drained the fuel to 50%. It seemed the engineers had forgotten to fill it up again. Endo Kerman probably had a rant at them after he got back... The mission had to go on regardless. I still had 2.2km of DV to play around with, but I had a lot of maneuverers to do - Mun injection burn, circularization burn, inclination change, course correction, ejection burn and retrograde burn. That 2.2km didn't seem so large anymore. after the course correction I had 25 seconds of burn time... after the ejection burn 14 seconds... after the retrograde 1 second - but Endo was certainly happy to be getting home.
  15. I'm planning to create a 3-piece mother ship to perform a manned Duna mission (My first!). However I'm also having some worries and troubles with the scheme. Firstly, I for the life of me cannot do docking. I tried to make a space station a while back in 0.24 and got some good intercepts, but every time I tried to match our velocities I just zipped by. Does anyone have any helpful pointers on the matter? Secondly, I'm not 100% sure if my setup can get me to Duna and back. My propulsion stage is one of the Kerbodyne tanks with 2 L-VN's on the bottom. Is this viable or should I scale the tank down a bit? Finally, I'm a bit confused on how to build the lander - specifically how much Delta V I need. I'm assuming a mix of LV-909's and Rockomax 48-7S are good enough. Do I even need parachutes? Thanks for the help in advance. EDIT - I do have KER so I can see Delta V, TWR etc. and I am NOT using transfer windows. I haven't gotten the hang of them yet, and I'm just too impatient! (I also still need to get the hang of using Imgur)
  16. Just a quick question on transferring to other planets... My current method is simply get into orbit around Kerbol and twiddle around with a maneuverer until I get an encounter with said planet. Is it fine to pack an adequate amount of fuel and do this, or should I wait for orbital transfers?
  17. This could happen in KSP theoretically. If an asteroid aerobraked at Kerbin, then was accelerated by either the Mun or Minmus, it could raise the periapsis out of Kerbin's atmosphere and put it in an orbit
  18. I suggest dithcing the rovemates altogether - I find them cumbersome and hard to put stuff on. If you want a good rover base, I'd suggest just using the structual girders of plates.
  19. So I'm thinking of going interplanetary with my rockets. The only places I've ever gone is the Mun and Minmus, and i have only just gotten used to going to them! What would be the best place to go as a beginner? Is Duna the way to go? Or would Jool be better? Also on a less related note - any pointers for a viable rocket altogether? I'm assuming NERVAs are the way to go...right?
  20. With liquidfuel and intakeair the liquid fuel goes down at barely a crawl, while with liquid fuel and oxidizer they burn at a ferocious rate. Shouldn't they burn at same rate, considerng that the oxidizer is basically onboard intake air...right? Or am I just being silly?
