Usually I use the engine as "heatshield", as Methusalem said. I tried to solve the parachute problem by putting lights under parachutes, but they didn't protect the chutes. To tater, lander can is not a problem, it can take 1700 degrees. Goo canisters can take 1450 degrees, they don't usually blow up. But radial parachutes take only 1150 degrees, and they are the ones that overheat and explode. But that placement tip by Methusalem to put them on battery bank is a good one, I'll try it. Hopefully it won't cause disintegration when the chutes deploy, but maybe I'll put them to deploy gradually, so they won't stress the joint so much. I'll put this to solved state now. Thanks to all again!

The chutes are really exploding. Here is an example of a spaceship's last stage when they explode: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2gky9pdcu0w2ara/ship.png?dl=0 I think I have the latest version of DRE. Realchutes is a mod I might try. Also procedural parts seems a good idea, because those heatshields that come with DRE don't have adjustable sizes. I have used fairings with this, but with DRE heatshieds it means that my last stage will be 2.5 meters wide if I have a manned mission, and it is not wise if you think of the ships delta-v. Anyway, thank you for these tips, and any other tips are welcome also!

Hello all. I have installed DRE mod, and tried it for a little while now, as an addition to FAR, with which I have played for a lot longer. It makes things a lot harder in many occasions when returning to Kerbin atmosphere. The radial parachutes seem to explode no matter what I do, unless I install a significantly bigger heatshield compared to other ship (for example 1.25 meter ship with 2.5 meter heatshield). This of course causes the aerodynamic features of the ship to be less than optimal when flying upwards, because of FAR. Do you, who have more experience with DRE, have any good tips or examples on how to protect those radial parachutes from overheating during descent? Or do you use them at all?

Kerbin-Destroying Ferram Physics

Here is the log from the same try that I posted those few lines earlier. https://www.dropbox.com/s/wwj16v718kx92gc/Player.log?dl=0 Let me know if you want me to make more tests... -
Hello, fellow wanna-be astronauts. I'm a nerdish player from Finland. I have read this forum for a long time before joining, there is a lot of information and other good stuff in here. I have played too much of KSP, about 560 hours and counting (too bad steam counts all hours). It's nice to see how far this game has come even in the time I have played it, since 0.22. I have a feeling it will still get a lot better when it's all done. And a small tip to all beginners of the game: study the basics of kerbal space flight from this forum (TWR, delta-v, apoapsis, periapsis and so on) and build-try-fail-revert-improve and repeat this until you succeed. Kerbal Engineer Redux helps a lot also, it boosted my gaming experience tremendously, when I didn't need to guess or calculate ships stats.

Kerbin-Destroying Ferram Physics
zuuhis79 replied to Samniss Arandeen's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
Ok, I can do it, if it helps more than these lines from ground contact. The game itself is a clean install with only latest FAR added. I have access to my linux machine next time on monday, so I'll do it then. -

Kerbin-Destroying Ferram Physics
zuuhis79 replied to Samniss Arandeen's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
I tried it today with FAR, and my spaceship didn't explode this time. Instead all the joints fail at the same time when ship touches ground (or physics kick in), and I have a bunch of separate parts on launchpad. They fall quite slowly, so they are not exploding. Maybe NEAR works because it won't cause disintegration or something like that. Same log lines generate to log file than before. Still a lot of lines that say "An invalid object handle was used". -

Ok. I'll try it tomorrow, I don't have access to my linux machine today. -
Kerbin-Destroying Ferram Physics
zuuhis79 replied to Samniss Arandeen's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
Ok, that explains why the 32-bit version was not running without steam. I have a 64-bit version of ubuntu. I didn't have any other than default setting of libraries. I managed to find some hints with google how to find out which libraries are missing, and installed them. Still I don't know if they are the proper versions of those libraries, but the game runs in 32-bit now. The problem itself still persists, when running the game without steam in 32-bit. The moment problem occurs, KSP generates these two lines to the log file: [LOG 23:24:13.315] [untitled Space Craft]: ground contact! - error: 0.019m [LOG 23:24:13.315] Unpacking Untitled Space Craft After that my ship explodes. I tried NEAR also. Everything works fine, but it generates same log lines on ground contact. Ship stays in one piece, and it flies. There are also a lot of lines in log that says "An invalid object handle was used". Is there a way to update all those libraries with one or a few commands, there are quite a lot of them? I don't know if those are old versions of them. -
Kerbin-Destroying Ferram Physics
zuuhis79 replied to Samniss Arandeen's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
Well, I run it now in 64 bit, so not a problem for me. I haven't managed to run the 32-bit version without steam, don't know why. I thought to post my problem just to report, that it is not a problem of only one player. It might also be a bug in the 32-bit linux version of KSP that occurs only with FAR. How much of NEAR and FAR code is identical? Maybe I could try this with NEAR and see if it has the same problem. Or is this type of behaviour so marginal, that there is no point of researching it any further? -
Kerbin-Destroying Ferram Physics
zuuhis79 replied to Samniss Arandeen's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
Hello. I have been having this same problem with 32-bit linux version of KSP (default version Steam launches), only installed mod being FAR. 64-bit version works perfectly. I run it in Ubuntu 14.04 and FAR version is 14.3. I have tried to reinstall everything on a fresh install of game. Besides already described problems, my ship sometimes disintegrates on launchpad when physics kick in and my plane has only a few parts. Or if my ship has only a command pod, and I tip it on it's side, it flies right out of kerbol system, it's speed being something like a billion m/s. The game might also crash. Here is some log of the example launch, when command pod exploded right after physics kicking in: Kerbal Space Program - 0.25.0.0 (LinuxPlayer) Steam OS: Linux 3.13 Ubuntu 14.04 64bit CPU: Intel® Core i5-4300M CPU @ 2.60GHz (4) RAM: 7891 GPU: Mesa DRI Intel® Haswell Mobile x86/MMX/SSE2 (256MB) SM: 30 (OpenGL 3.0 [3.0 Mesa 10.1.3]) RT Formats: ARGB32, ARGBHalf, RGB565, ARGB4444, ARGB1555, Default, DefaultHDR, ARGBFloat, RGFloat, RGHalf, RFloat, RHalf, R8 [WRN 16:58:07.793] [HighLogic]: =========================== Scene Change : From SPACECENTER to FLIGHT (Async) ===================== [LOG 16:58:08.395] FAR: save AG actionGroupSpoiler as Brakes [LOG 16:58:08.395] FAR: save AG actionGroupIncreaseFlapDeflection as None [LOG 16:58:08.396] FAR: save AG actionGroupDecreaseFlapDeflection as None [LOG 16:58:09.294] AddonLoader: Instantiating addon 'FARGlobalControlFlightObject' from assembly 'FerramAerospaceResearch' [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing rect [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing bool [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing rect [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing rect [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing rect [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing rect [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing rect [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing rect [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing rect [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing bool [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing int [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing int [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing int [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing string [LOG 16:58:09.297] Parsing rect [LOG 16:58:09.323] ------------------- initializing flight mode... ------------------ [LOG 16:58:09.328] Target vessel index: 1 vessel count: 2 [LOG 16:58:09.330] [FLIGHT GLOBALS]: Switching To Vessel Untitled Space Craft ---------------------- [LOG 16:58:09.331] setting new dominant body: Kerbin FlightGlobals.mainBody: Kerbin [LOG 16:58:09.332] Reference Frame: Rotating [LOG 16:58:09.358] [untitled Space Craft]: landed - waiting for ground contact to resume physics...
