The DunaMax mission to plant a flag on Duna and Ike
DonLorenzo replied to DonLorenzo's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
That's very strange. I checked it on my computer, laptop and phone and they all work fine. Have you tried some different quality settings or perhaps browsers? Cheers -

That's odd and shouldn't happen.. Can you tell me a specific video + spot? -
The DunaMax mission to plant a flag on Duna and Ike
DonLorenzo replied to DonLorenzo's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Approaching Duna we attempt an aerobrake/aerocapture maneuver to put is into a stable orbit before using one of the landers to descend. The pilots and scientists at home (drunk again!) guessed an altitude far too high for any sort of braking to happen and most of the capture was performed with rockets. Fuel is starting to look low for any chance of getting home. The first of the two landers is detached (leaving the ship imbalanced) and lands on Duna. A slight design oversight in its engines impart a dreadful spin whenever they fire, but intrepid pilots cope well. What was meant to be a one way mission takes a surprising turn as there appears to be enough fuel left in the little lander to get back into orbit! After the great success on Duna the mission continues onwards to Ike. A landing is attempted and as our Duna pioneer observes from Duna orbit contact is suddenly lost with the Ike lander AND the mothership. They have disappeared on the far side of Ike and were never heard of again. Unsure what to do, this pilot turns around once more for a second landing on Duna and will await rescue there. Watch the last video to find out what happened to the would-be-Ikeans. Hope you enjoyed this not quite successfull mission! Next one to Eve and in .21 ofcourse Cheers, Lorenzo -
Hello fellow kerbonauts! I've been playing KSP again for the first time in a while and have decided to chronicle my missions in the form of youtube videos this time around. They can be found here: Now on to the most recent mission; the DunaMax mission. The ship was based on a robust 4x NERVA interplanetary transfer cluster with two small independent landers for planetfall and flag planting purposes on Duna and Ike. Despite unsimilar conditions (ie. no atmosphere on Ike) the landers are identical and both pack parachutes. This was done mostly for rocket balance reasons. See me talk through the design and initial launch here: As you can see, things did not get off to a great start. The initial construction proved too flimsy with not enough struts. After attempting to solve this problem by using lots of boosters, struts, duct-tape and an unmeasurable quantity of 'gut-feeling' I finally gave up and went for a drink. Afterwards, things did not go well either. The lesson learned here is that while booze may serve as rocket fuel under the right conditions providing any quantity of it to either spacecraft engineers or pilots (they're a thirsty bunch for sure) is not good policy. No one went to space today After sleeping off the headache and cleaning out the rubble, the folks at mission control did one last launch where everything appeared to go swimmingly Everything looks good, but once more a strut related problem throws a wrench in the works. This late-stage failure however won't hold anyone back and on the next go the DunaMax (design revision 67) finally sits comfortably on orbit In the next video I explain for the viewers at home how to do an interplanetary transfer without any math, using just the tools provided by KSP. This maneuver is then subsequently executed. Continued in first post!

Thanks! This place changes everytime I check back ^^

Hello there fellow kerbals. You may recall this thread from a few weeks/months ago, you're not delirious but I think it got nuked in the recent forum rollback. Anyway, so it turns out that I made a YouTube series using KSP to detail and explain various concepts involved in spaceflight and rocketry. I made five episodes and then kind of stopped, mostly because I was moving to Malta for my new job and my computer was in the mail. That's all been sorted now and I'm connected again and decided to resume the series. The last video I did is about DeltaV and TWR, so if those concepts have been tough to grasp for you then head on over and be educated by me If you like them the best way to support me and ensure more videos in the future is (as always) to like, subscribe and share. Thanks for watching and enjoy! By the way is it still possible to embed videos on the forums here? There appear to be fewer buttons than before. Anyway, Cheers!

The speed boost comes not from the rotation, but from grabbing onto the much faster-moving tether if I see it right. I get it could make the payload a lot lighter (no need for an engine+fuel), but surely the tether itself will need reboosting/stationkeeping..?

Yeah I loved freelancer. Had some good moments in it. Thanks for your suggestions, keep em coming!

There will always be somebody worse off in some related or not-so-related way than you are. Does that invalidate your bad luck? No. From the sounds of it, sucks to be all of you! Kidding aside, it's a bit silly to go comparing misfortune to see who has it the worst. Stuff breaking is never fun, and if it's entertainment stuff it has the added 'benefit' of probably breaking on you just when you need some unwinding. Also, what is this borderlands everyone speaks of edit: oops didn't see the whole second page. Oh well. Feel free to bask in this wisdom none the less

Hey guys, Every couple of months/years I get a craving to play garish space games. It's that time again and I need me some gratuitous, mainstreamy space battles and explosions. Think something along the lines of Nexus: The jupiter incident or a more hands on space/fighter/sim like the X series. I'm currently playing Endless Space, a fairly good if somewhat bland 4x game. I've seen something-something-pegasus, but it didn't appeal. Any tips for me? Something new-ish (released 2010 on) I want most, but some oldies I might've missed are welcome too. Bring on the suggestions, tell me your favourite 'not too much thought required' space games!

Im sure the whole weightlessness thing helps with the cramped quarters

When I make a kethane map and switch craft it's erased. Is that intentional or not? Am I doing something wrong?

Efficient sun orbit.
DonLorenzo replied to 99TheCreator's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Most efficient way to get into a solar orbit (as a free-flying spacecraft..) is to first establish a kerbin orbit so as not to waste fuel due to gravity drag. Also, the lower your altitude when burning for escape, the more efficient it is (an intuitive way to think about it is that the fuel you're burning hasn't been lifted as high, thus having had less previous fuel 'wasted on it'. This adds up when doing long 'straight up' burns). Then from LKO, burn for kerbin escape, if possible incorporating a mun slingshot, however be sure to have the mun slingshot happen AFTER all your fuel is expended. If you burn a little, wait untill you're out at munar orbit, get the slingshot and then complete the burn to escape it might well be less efficient than just burning till escape directly from LKO. Same goes for minmus, but it's going to be a teensy tiny little slingshot which might not be worth the effort. As for getting a specific (higher or lower than kerbins, for instance) sun orbit, do as you normally do and aim pro/retro. Keep in mind that even though you're doing orbital maneuvers you'll be going fast (relative to kerbin), so on the scale of kerbin your kerbol inject trajectory will more resemble a straight line than an ellipse. Keep this in mind when aiming for pro/retro grade. Good luck! -
Guys I have to apologize. I can't run the campaign anymore. I've kept telling myself I'll have more time in a bit, but the truth is I just don't and won't for the foreseeable future. Sure I have a couple of hours here and there, but nowhere near enough to allow for anything resembling constant play with predictable/stable turn update intervals. I have enjoyed your enthusiasm and submissions a lot, if anyone else wants to take over the management I'll gladly provide all the documents I have so someone else can take over the stick. If not, we'll just let this die a graceful death. Perhaps to revive it in a few weeks/months, but no promises. Sorry!

Hey guys, I\'m hosting a little gathering for space aficionados and general alcoholics to celebrate the (hopefully successful) landing of the curiosity rover landing next Monday morning. I\'m in the Netherlands in the city of Assen, whoever is in the area and feels like having some morning beers and/ or checking out the landing is welcome to come join us. Let me know if you\'re interested. Cheers

Hey guys, some more bad news. The internet at my home has fucked up (more specifically, the cable bit going to my room). I\'ll have to badger the landlord to fix this or do a temporary solution. Additionally I\'m spending a few days in Amsterdam now, and also still taking care of that other home. So as you can probably see coming, I still haven\'t done the turn. As it\'s just me bottlenecking things now, and I don\'t really know when I\'ll be able to do it I\'m not going to put up a new extension deadline or whatnot, all I can do is do it \'as soon as I can\', which unfortunately probably won\'t be for at least a couple more days. So consider the campaign paused for the moment. I will send all of you an e-mail when I\'m back in proper operating status, so you won\'t need to follow the thread/forum like a hawk. I hope to get things sorted soon!! Cheers

Ugh that sounds like a pain. Probably a nice passerby took it out of the rain for you.. permanently. I definately don\'t appreciate being woken up by rain! There\'s been a lull in new stories as I\'m working on something different, trying to sell a house I\'ve accidently bought! Some spam for that will appear in my signature soon enough ><

One thing I\'m hoping for is that among all the many different worlds, there will be one, or even a couple or REALLY HARD ONES. What I mean with that is that they would be absolutely difficult to get to, be far out, have a weird orbit or somesuch. Ofcourse they\'d also be really massive (high G) or have a difficult atmosphere. Basically, something that will really be an achievement if you can even land on it. Let alone return.

Yeah there will be some re-design of things in .16. I\'m breaking my head over how to do it properly, there will be some changes to how things are now, but they shouldn\'t be too sweeping. Mostly I want to have it feel like progression, not replacement. I\'ve got some fledging ideas on how to tackle it, but can\'t discuss too much without inadvertently spilling some proverbial beans. One thing I thought would be fun though: release date and turn schedules permitting, we\'ll progress to .16 when the space station is completed. How does that sound?
