  3. Darnok, you said in the How Many People Can The Earth Support thread that clean energy is bad. I have three questions.

    A: WTF?!?!

B: How did you come to this conclusion?

C: No offense, but can you improve your grammar a little bit (if English isn't your first language I apologize)?

Ok, let's call a truce, shall we?

      P.S. #BreakBreak4MakeMake

P.P.S. A moon was just announced for the dwarf planet Makemake a few minutes ago. I propose Breakbreak as the name of that moon, because Break is the opposite of Make.

Can't we do both? No disaster in life's history has been similar to this, in that this is an attack on ALL FRONTS. So no species is even remotely equipped to deal with this. Oh, yeah, have you seen the pictures of modern Beijing on a good day? In fact, this is the worst mass extinction since the asteroid that hit Earth 65 million years ago. And we all know how that turned out for the dominant lifeform...

Ok, so it's a matter of money? I agree that space exploration is important, but why don't we use the trillion or so dollars that goes into the US budget every year as "defense" spending. Almost none of that goes to defense! So, you're OK if we kill the environment? I'm sorry for asking you to improve your grammar, I understand if English isn't your first or second language. It's amazingly good by Internet standards .

  6. Um... Darnok? You seriously think we don't know that the speed of light is constant? Ever heard of relativity?

So, Darnok, does that count as "evidence"? Do you admit I was right? ;)

We know that relativity is correct because we've proven time dilation, and no other theory predicts it. Also, I'm pretty sure we can infer the speed of light from communication times with probes, and it's constant. Could someone get @sevenperforce to help here?

Ok. Remember, relativity tells us that the speed of light is constant everywhere. That's why it's called a universal constant. Imagine you're standing on a spaceship going half the speed of light. You shine a flashlight out the back. You would think that the light would be traveling backwards at only half its usual speed. However, relativity says that it's still going at its normal speed. To compensate, space and time warp and bend. We've measured this with very precise atomic clocks and the like. Because we know relativity is correct, we can know that the speed of light is constant everywhere.
