Does anyone else find some of the new special effects glitchy or just plain bad looking?

For example, when I use some of the SRBs, I get these kind of circular flashes/strobing of light that seems really glitchy. The re-entry fire effects also seem super jagged (looks like a hand drawn Christmas tree to be honest), and the splash down effect seems really fuzzy and ugly.

The reentry effects are the one thing in this update that actually look good in my opinion, but yeah other than that I agree with you.

It's not just Mission Control. It's also Administration, R&D, and the Astronaut Complex. And sometimes I hear a snippet of the music when I'm leaving the building. I have submitted a bug report.

While we're on the topic of bugs, is it just me or are the icons in Administration lower resolution now?

I just put mine on the Technical Support forums. But yeah, I see the same problem on Windows 8, only for me it's the left half of the left column rather than the top half of the top row.

Yeah I know what you mean with the snippet of audio as you leave. I got that exact same issue, I just didn't know how to describe it.

I didn't check the other buildings, I only went to the VAB and then mission control, then I got liquided off and went straight to this thread to complain.

So this wasn't just a problem with my computer; this was actually just pure incompetence on the part of Take Two.

In fact, how much money do you want to bet that they rushed the 1.4 release so that they could force people to agree to the EULA before the new DLC came out?

Just when I thought I couldn't get more liquided off today...

Can find a place to report bugs. In the VAB, the top row of icons are cut off on the Mac:

I get this exact same thing on linux too.

  3. Well guys, unfortunately I have some bad news.

In light of the new EULA, which I have just read, I have decided that I will no longer be continuing my work on Pale Green Dot.

It's just not worth it. Take Two Interactive clearly doesn't care about this community, and while the EULA hasn't killed the game, it has apparently struck it a fatal wound. As of today, all of my work, along with every single mod and fanfiction related to KSP is now the property of Take Two Interactive, and they can do with it whatever they want. The mere knowledge of this fact has killed my motivation to continue this story. I started writing this for my enjoyment as much as you guys', and writing simply isn't fun anymore knowing that now Take Two could take away all of my work at their discretion.

In five days I will turn 20. I'm too old for this crap. I've already gone through the experience of watching a game I loved get destroyed, and its community along with it. I'm not going to sit by and watch that happen again. And I'm certainly not going to do all that just for a fan fiction that I started two summers ago for fun. I'm sorry.

I'm also probably not going to get the DLC, as much as I've been looking forward to it, for the simple reason that I don't want to give Take Two any of my money.

I finished up my revisions/additions to chapter 2.4, and modified the last parts a little so that it at least somewhat resembles an ending. I will also update and finalize the PDF, which I suggest you download via the link in the OP as soon as possible because Take Two may very well decide to take it down. I also uploaded all of the images that I never used to an imgur album, link for that is also in the OP.

So long guys, it was fun while it lasted.

    Chapter 2.4

    UNKK: Kerbal Space Center

    5221 YHD Day 26, 4:30 ST

    MfjT49I.jpg

                   Capcom”

                   “Go!”

                   “Telemetry”

                   “Go”

                   “Flight”

                   “Go”

                   “Life Support”

                   “Go”

                   “Recovery”

                   “Go”

                   “Pilot”

                   “Go!”

Just a few days after he had arrived at the Kerbal Space Center, Jebediah Kerman sat securely inside of the cramped Moho 1 spacecraft. Originally scheduled to be one in a series of previous un-kerballed test flights, the directors of the space program decided to move forward into manned flights immediately, following the UFKR’s successful launch of the Almach. Because of this, Jebediah had no sooner set foot on the runway at the KSC before he was rushed off by staff to be poked, prodded, and examined by doctors, taught everything he needed to know about the mission and tested thoroughly by instructors, and thrown into a crude flight simulator for a few hours, all without so much as a snack break in between. He was puzzled at first, but Jebediah had worked for the air force long enough to know exactly what they were doing. He was the guinea pig; the expendable newcomer, thrown into an unfinished test craft at the last minute, in a desperate attempt to keep up with the UFKR. He didn’t mind, however. He liked the excitement, and if he survived, he would get to pester the engineers all he wanted about the various flaws and things that didn’t work right.

“Moho 1 is cleared for takeoff! T-minus 10 seconds to launch...”

And he’d be the first New Kolusian in space. That did have a nice ring to it…

    lpawnwQ.jpg

                   “5.. 4.. 3.. 2.. Ignition!”

Jebediah always though he was a little crazy. Surely, any sane kerbal would be shaking in terror as several tons of liquid hydrogen and oxygen were ignited just a few meters below them. But Jebediah couldn’t be bothered. He just wanted to go to space.

    MQI0APk.jpg

                   “Liftoff!”

The rocket bolted upward with considerable force, shuddering fiercely as the launch clamps released it upward into the awaiting sky.

    d8avzjT.png

“This is Channel 7 National News bringing you a live report from the Kerbal Space Center! Just moments ago, the KSP launched their first kerballed mission into space! Pilot Jebediah Kerman is reporting all systems go, rocket is performing admirably, and within just a few minutes, the capsule is expected to reach outer space! We will have more news for you as it develops, on this truly historic day!”

    XGuTwAO.png

“Cabin pressure is holding. Fuel is go. Approaching 2 gees!”

Jebediah read aloud the readings on his control console intermittently, trying to stay focused as the g-forces started to build, and the rocket sailed higher and higher into the air.

                   Beep!

An alarm went off, and one of the dials began flashing red.

                   “I’m getting a high-gee alarm.”

“We read you, Jeb. Just hang in there, your acceleration will stabilize shortly.”

                   Well that was reassuring.

                   “Copy, Control. Currently reading 4 gees… 5 gees… approaching 6 gees…”

Jebediah’s vision started to blur, and his breathing became increasingly difficult.

“Jeb, your vitals are slipping. Please confirm.”

Jeb opened his mouth to respond, but the words never came. The beeping of the alarms turned into a soft, distant echo, muffled increasingly by the sound of his own labored breathing.

                   “…Jeb, how are you feeling…………………………………?”

The faint whispers of the radio resounded emptily through the void, losing all coherent meaning as the last of Jebediah’s vision was encompassed by inescapable darkness…

“…Jebediah, come in! This is KSC, if you can hear me, please respond! ”

    bU2pBBI.png

                   The sharp chattering of the radio only made Jebediah’s head throb more. His mind began to entertain all manner of obscenities with which to reply to this noise that disturbed him so. His voice, however, responded differently, as if his lips were operating entirely with a mind of their own;

                   “What happened?” He groaned.

“You blacked out, Jeb, but you’re alright. Just remain calm, and breathe slowly.”

The interior of the Moho capsule slowly faded into existence, and with it Jeb’s memory of the situation.

“Copy, control, I’ll give you my readings as soon as I can… see…”

Through the small window in front of him, the sky stretched out before him like a watery canvas, meeting the empty void of space in a shimmering curtain of blue light. All of the pain and dizziness melted away instantly as Jeb gazed down at the curvature of Kerbin for the first time.

“Congratulations Jeb, you’re officially the first New Kolusian in space!”

Somewhere in the ocean, west of the UNKK

    A few minutes later

    DWP6N1a.jpg

“This is recovery patrol calling UKS Kermenia, we have just spotted the Moho capsule 2 kilometers from your position.”

A small rescue helicopter flew over the ocean, tracking a yellow-and-white parachute descending slowly from the sky.

“Roger, recovery patrol, we’re tracking your position now. Bring that capsule home, and be sure to give that space Kerbal a warm welcome!”

The service helicopter had barely touched the ground before Jebediah was swarmed by the press, followed by generous applause and the flashing of cameras. He didn’t even try to keep up with the reporters, who were all desperately shouting over each other with questions for the nation’s first Kerbonaut. A group of military officers stood behind them, along with the President himself, who congratulated Jebediah.

“You’ve made your country proud, Jebediah.” The President said, shaking his hand and smiling for the cameras. Rather taken aback, Jebediah didn’t really know how to respond to such a huge fanfare.

“Glad to be of service, Mr. President.” Was all he could think to say.

There was a moment of awkward silence between them, as they both smiled for the cameras, which assaulted them with a relentless barrage of camera flashes and clicking shutters. Jebediah walked over to the crowd of reporters to answer a few questions. Ironically, Jeb was glad to have some time to himself, now that he had an excuse to avoid being constantly pushed around by KSC staff. He quite liked the attention, in fact. He could get used to being famous…

P.S. If anyone would still like to remain in contact with me, PM me and I can friend you on discord or something.

  4. Ok so I've been playing around with this update some more and I immediately found some bugs:

    1. There is a graphical bug with the parts selection menu in the VAB, something appears to be covering the top row of parts and makes them look glitchy

    2. Music is silent in the Mission Control building

I noticed these in less than 2 minutes after starting a new career mode game. Are you guys planning to release a follow-up to patch some of the bugs in this release? Also, I am playing on Linux, so that might be a contributing factor...

As nice as this update is, it’s breaking quite a lot. Old flags are experiencing issues, and saves/craft files are broken as they don’t use the old fuel tanks. This was an update I was actually eager for but I’ve been playing too long to see several of my best saves just crumble to dust because T2 entered the picture.

Sorry, but it’s 1.3.1 for me. Unless T2 wants to be fair to those of us who have been upgrading saves since .21.

Very shiny and new. But internally, all of my old tools and friends are dead.

Yep, this is what happens when a big money-hungry company buys out your game. They fill it with shiny trinkets and break half the features. Isn't corporate consolidation fun? :D

    I don't think it'll really change a thing.

Please note I'm not a lawyer. If I was a lawyer, I'd have to ask for money, because formal legal advice from a lawyer requires a formal lawyer-client relationship, and lawyers don't work for free.

My understanding of things is that your fanfiction continues to violate Take Two's copyright, and Take Two will continue to ignore this because it's good PR for them. However, explicitly adding it to the TOS means that if, for some reason, Take Two does take exception, there is explicit language in the contract. Without explicit language in the contract, a judge might reasonably say "you've let it slide for all these other people, and thus you've granted users an implicit right to fanfiction." With explicit language, however, there is no ambiguity to possibly exploit, so Take Two can still take it down if, for some reason, they take exception.

They probably won't, though: fanfiction is usually good PR, and attacking fanfiction writers (nevermind established fanfiction writers) could easily cause a community revolt.

EDIT: Also, as discussed in the other thread (to which this will probably be merged), Take Two and Squad have to be very circumspect in what they say right now, because it could be constituted as "legal advice" and open them up to liability. Safer for them to stay mum.

    https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/171236-updated-terms-notice-privacy-policy-discussion/

Thanks. I hope you are right, I was looking forward to getting at least one more good year out of this game.

If not though, I will definitely join said "community revolt". I've already had two of my favorite games ruined by money-hungry developers (those being Minecraft and ARK), I'd rather not have KSP become the third.

  7. As I am sure everyone here is aware, Kerbal Space Program was some time ago acquired by Take Two Interactive. Given this company's track record when it comes to how it treats fan content for its own games, I immediately became concerned when I tried to log in to the forums today and had to read through and accept new terms of service, which were ever so reassuringly titled "TAKE-TWO INTERACTIVE SOFTWARE, INC. TERMS OF SERVICE".

One particular section of the new terms of service greatly concerns me, and I would greatly appreciate some clarification from staff as to what implications this will have in regards to fan content (such as mods, videos, fan art/ fan fiction, etc) for Kerbal Space Program.

Here is the section in question (with the particularly concerning parts underlined):

    Quote

    TRADEMARK AND COPYRIGHT INFORMATION

All Online Services material, including, but not limited to, text, data, graphics, logos, button icons, images, audio clips, video clips, links, digital downloads, data compilations, and software is owned, controlled by, licensed to, or used with permission by the Company and is protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property rights. The Online Services material is made available solely for your personal, non-commercial use and may not be copied, reproduced, republished, modified, uploaded, posted, transmitted, or distributed in any way, including by email or other electronic means, without the express prior written consent of the Company in each instance. You may download material intentionally made available for downloading through the Online Services for your personal, non-commercial use only, provided that you keep intact any and all copyright and other proprietary notices that may appear on such materials.

What exactly does "Online Services material" mean in this context, and how does it relate to fan content posted on the forums?

For example, I have been writing a fan-fiction novel intermittently for the past year and a half or so, which I have posted to my own thread in the 'KSP Fan Works' section of this forum. I did this for my own enjoyment, of course, and I certainly do not make any money off of it. Regardless, I did technically distribute artwork/writing that uses and is based off of copyrighted material, and I didn't ask for Take Two's permission before I did it. Nor did I have to, because as far as I am aware the Terms of Service at that time required me to do no such thing. Is that going to change now? Any time that I want to distribute fan art or writing related to KSP, am I going to have to ask for Take Two's direct permission, as these new terms seem to dictate?

Does this apply to mods as well?

I do hope I am just misinterpreting this, but nonetheless I have become greatly concerned about the future of the KSP community. Fan content is the life blood of Kerbal Space Program. If you kill the fan content, you kill the game. Period. Hopefully any staff who are reading this can understand my concerns, and I would really appreciate it if one of you could please clarify what exactly these new terms mean with regards to fan content; and more specifically, if I can still write my fan-fiction novel without having to worry about getting sued.

Anyway, I have updated the OP with a download link to the new PDF. Link also here:  https://mega.nz/#!1EpyjY6C!dwiGclFbngJZcWfLAWsVMk5FlyTmSRr2j3eduFUXvWY

I will update the other posts in this thread to match the PDF shortly.

  9. This thread is not dead!

Hi guys, sorry for the ridiculously long wait. I've been putting this project on hold in order to wait for the release of the Making History Expansion. Now that the release date is near, I'm picking up the project again, and will be writing the next few chapters very soon, as well as revising some of the old ones.

If anyone is still here, don't give up. More content is coming soon!

    Very nice Venera!

In theory the Venera Mars and Fobos / Mars 96 are all the same basic bus, it could expand in future.

I would suggest maybe adding in/ changing the orientation of the solar panels so that they can fit onto the side of the soyuz engine properly. You can't really see it in the screenshot but the way that the solar panels are mounted on is rather ghetto and ugly.

I think you're mistaken about those quotes. They're specifically referring to the console re-release being called "Enhanced Edition" when in reality it should be called "Finally Functional Edition."

Those posters were not referring to changes to the PC game, just the marketing spin that Squad/Take-Two are attempting on the console version.

The new console version isn't  "enhananced," unless someone considers a finally finished and actually working product "enhanced."

I see. Thanks for the clarification.
