The MachingBird Challenge!
TheHengeProphet replied to TheHengeProphet's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Thank you tavert for that link! I'm glad somebody managed to recover something, even if it is just the old leaderboard! I'll be working on getting the new leaderboard up soon, but this weekend is bound to be busy for me. -

Yes, I am reviving The MachingBird Challenge, as it was lost in the server revival. I will be dividing entries more diligently, this run around. The Maching Bird Challenge: How fast can you go on jet power? Top speed will be measured by Highest Speed Over Land in the Flight Log, to prevent artificial inflation that can be caused via sub-orbital hops. Read the rules, people! Rules: 1. Must be jet powered only! The craft may not use any oxidizer, monopropellant, or Xenon. -a. R.A.P.I.E.R. engine is not a jet. It is an aspirated rocket. 2. Must take off horizontally from the runway (need not retain landing gear for the duration of the flight) 3. Screenshots! Must have screenshots of: -a. Your craft on the runway (preferrably moving). -b. Your craft in flight. -c. Your craft's Flight Log (can be accessed by pressing F3) This is neccessary, as top speed will be measured by Highest Speed Over Land --c1. For clarification, no, you are not allowed to jump out of your craft then take the flightlog screenshot. -d. The resources tab must be open at all times, as proof of appropriate fuel usage. This rule will be strictly enforced to ensure capsule MonoProp is not used! -e. Any staging events that happen, such as drop-tanks, launch stages, wheel drops, etcetera. 4. Use of the dev console, particularly for part clipping, is exploitative and will be considered cheating for the purposes of this challenge. 5. This is primarily a stock challenge, so only stock parts are allowed, along with no other mods being installed. This means that CFG modding will earn you a permanent ban from the challenge. Exceptions are as such: -a. Subassembly Loader, as it does not interfere with craft capability, only ease of construction. Rule defunct, as this is now default game functionality. -b. Mechjeb, for Mechjeb category entries. -c. Ferram Aerospace Research, but you must specify if you use it, as there will be a special accolade for users of that mod! -d. Kerbal Engineer Redux, and Steam Gauges, as they only provides readouts, though use of this will disqualify from being stock. Please Clarify whether your craft is manned, unmanned, and what/if any mods are used, for the simplicity of categorization. Yes, I know I can look to see if there are pilots, but I'd like to keep myself from HAVING to do that. There will be one category, with special commendations or notes being listed after the entry. This is to avoid the mess that will happen if I go on in the style of the old leaderboard. The old leaderboards will stay the old leaderboards, and all new entries will be required. This does not mean that old entries may not be submitted, however. Notice: .23 has changed the resource management, allowing multiple intakes to become much more useful. As such, .23 entries cannot be categorised in with prior versions, leading to me cleaning the leader board and moving all previous records into the second post. Special Commendations and Notes Mach-6 club: Meet or exceed mach 6, or 2056.2 m/s (round to 2056 m/s). True Maching Bird: exceed 2300 m/s MechJeb: Used MechJeb (obviously). If default aerodynamics bothers you, I suggest using the Ferram Aerospace Research mod. Link: http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/ferram-aerospace-research/ Good luck!

Is there a way to disable or lock control surfaces?
TheHengeProphet replied to katateochi's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Ferram Aerospace research has that as a function, among other things. Good mod, but it changes the dynamics of atmospheric flight quite greatly. Perhaps you can isolate that bit of the mod if that is all you want from it. -
No "Flight In Progress" after rover landing
TheHengeProphet replied to OptiSTR's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Did you accidentally click "End Flight", instead of "Space Center"? -
Yes, dahud, I am definitely up to no good! Fortunately, my mission does not care how much space junk you throw up there. Pollute the skies for all I care! All that matters to me is that nothing kerman-made crashes into the relay stations, which are landbased, so that is a low probability.

Re-unite the Kerbal Henge with a network! The mission: Land a device (similar to that of your comsat network) at each Monolith. Payment will be on a per Monolith basis. 10,000 Kerbucks for the Kerbalith (you should know why by now). 80,000 Kerbucks for each Munolith (there should be 3). I understand the final Monolith is... essentially impossible to find, and as such is not considered part of the mission. If you find and connect the final, you will be awarded 200,000 Kerbucks! For the sake of making this a challenge (even though you have satmapper), I will not direct you to any of the Monoliths.

My thoughts exactly. The beeping hill probably is a reference to Mission to mars. I have no idea what the image means, though.

Horizon Ball Question
TheHengeProphet replied to Alexander3OOO's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
To my knowledge, no, unfortunately. I've seen all sorts of videos with people using IVA, and they have vector and target markings. Is this stock, or does this require a mod? I've been wanting them so I can make instrumental landings. -
Reset the physics engine? I don't know what you mean. Yes, I have launched more than once, and aside from a little wobbling, the craft flies beautifully! [edit]Keep in mind, I only fly manually on ascent. A/SAS in 0.17 is a nightmare with large ships.[/edit]

InterPlanetary
TheHengeProphet replied to snow25699's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I believe Moho is perhaps the most difficult planet to reach, as you have a considerable velocity to kill to achieve Moho orbit, with no option of aerocapture. Landing is even worse, as the heat at lower altitudes is enough to detonate your fuel tanks! For those of you who don't like your inclination when you're heading into a SoI, I personally adjust it when I am around 11 days out. This allows me to achieve whatever angle of orbit I desire and gives me a good line of sight for adjusting for aerocapture (or aerobraking, and landing, if I'm feeling particularly ballsy). -
I personally run completely stock. I don't really want to bother with installing them, and I admid that I am a little proud of not using them; however, I have been considering using mechjeb, as getting into orbit over and over can get tiring. I don't use quicksaves, because I like the idea that if I mess up, I mess up and have to deal with the consequences. This can be both fun and frustrating, as I don't use maths for transfers, either (I fudge pretty much everything). While I may be on a "high horse" of not using mods, I'm not going to nay-say people who do, because I'm not playing the game for them. It's not like it diminishes my fun, I just like the challenge of a stock game!

I seem to have fixed the issue with this craft. The first thing I saw when I looked at this thing in the VAB was... what were you doing with those fuel lines? Feedback loops are a huge no-no... That does some weird stuff. Anyways, two of three sides were not connected to the center stage with fuel lines, meaning your fuel would not drain evenly. That was your problem. I took the liberty of straightening out all of your fuel lines and making all engines burn on liftoff. With the fixed setup, I got an escape orbit quite easily (almost got to the Mun with your ascent stage alone). I find the RCS tank to be entirely unneccessary and believe you can get away with one small one, rather than that hunk of unused fuel. Other than that, I was surprised at how easily this thing flew and congratulate you on an impressive and unconventional rocket! I wouldn't advise landing on anything with an atmosphere, with it, though.
-
It is around KSC2 only, which is very far away from any significant sources of water. I will try this, though, and report back, to see if it fixes the issue. [edit]Yep, that fixed it. Don't know why it would be trying to render water under the SSC, but apparently it was. Thanks for the pointer![/edit]

If they add some sort of city simulator, I would prefer it to be after they refined all the aero/space simulation. Also, I speculate that Kermans are a sentient plant species. This explains their incredible survivability without food, or large supplies of air, and tolerance to impact.
-
I've tested different graphical settings, and no matter what I do, when I try to land at the Serbal Space Center (I decided it was fitting to call it that because I am bored of "KSC2"), my framerate drops to around 1/s. This is not something you want to happen when trying to land a space plane. I am fine, landing on virtaully any other area of land, but SSC is too much... Does anybody else have this issue? Also, unrelated question: Is it just me, or does the SSC only have a dirt runway?
-
Would you care to post a craft file? I believe a little physical testing might work out the kinks. Also, can it fly without using A/SAS? I've had many a rocket work fine, but once you use ASAS, or SAS, it all goes to hell.

Duplicate Pilots
TheHengeProphet replied to ToTheWorld's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I have noticed no preferencial behaviour for file location, but I now see that I did misread what vexx32 said. I would use that if I hadn't loaded my primary drive down with steam games. -
Duplicate Pilots
TheHengeProphet replied to ToTheWorld's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I'm sure file location isn't the case. I have the game installed in its own file on my second harddrive, and this happens to me all the time. -
This isn't the real election? I voted Jeb, because he has the balls and stupidity to keep the space program going, despite the lack of funds to build actual housing for the rest of Kerman kind.
-
Also, the flatter the place you are landing, the better.
-
Congratulations! Often, I find it good to add some RCS, to kill some of that lateral motion while remaining upright.

Landing on Gilly via EVA is scary, due to the lack of instrumentation or overall data, which can make a rendezvous with your original craft difficult. This is not to say it's not doable; however, it is probably more doable than actually landing on Gilly with a ship. If you do decide to land on gilly with a ship, pick the largest, flattest area you can find, due to such areas being much less dangerous.
