I like the idea of the game having something like the civilapedia that's gradually filled out by discovered planets, atmospheres, tempatures. I also like the idea of the primary bodies being hidden along with other solar systems, needing telescopes to gleam more about them. Technology should also be linked to discovery; like geothermal power becoming easier to research upon discovering a active moon or planet. But science being done with experiments over long periods of time wouldn't mesh well with the KSP experience. I'm not against some experiments that have to take readings over time, but temp, pressure, atmosphere experiments shouldn't have to be ran more than once. That all being said; there's plenty of room for both. I wouldn't mind an atmosphere scanner or a temperature satellite that could be launched for a finer resolution of data with a science reward given over time. Even something like the Mars reconssiance orbiter would be awesome; with it being required for accurate surface maps since telescopes are limited by angular resolution. But the key is none of this gets in the way of just loading up a rocket and flying blind by the seat of my pants to another planet; just helps it all along. (Interstellar missions I do think should require prep work, so this mostly applies to the Kerbol system)

Then i'm REALLY glad i didn't go off about how bulky and energy-intensive the equipment for Liquifying gasses is since i completely misunderstood your proposal xD
-
Well yeah; the entire point is to bring that gas somewhere they can't just scoop it up from the surrounding enviroment. Also once you're in the atmosphere you don't need nearly as much thrust to reduce closing speeds; since the atmospheric drag will slow you plenty. Now what i will say is that i have no idea what the energy usage of a system like this vs something like mass electrolysis of water would look like, but i doubt it's in favor of the installation on the gas giant. I was just speculating on what i thought was a viable concept; not really thinking about the practicallity of it. I mean for all intents and purposes you're better off flying to the edges of the solar system and recovering much of your water from comets, dwarf planets and dust than tangling with gravity wells at all. Or just mining the moons of the gas giant you're considering putting floating cities around xD There's one other consideration on my mind though; which is that future fusion reactors may be powered by Helium-3 rather than Deuterium-Tritium Fusion. Which if that's the case means that you can't recover much Helium-3 outside of Gas Giants, making them really the only option. Of course you could just run everything planetside off the D-T cycle and have the He-3 reactors reserved for your spacecraft, so iv'e never found this that practical myself. But yes; you're absolutely correct that having a single ship that can process it's own fuel without needing to dock with any additional facilities makes much more sense.

Iv'e always thought that any semi-permanant installation would basically end up being a platform riding a plasma jet anyway. And any form of installation would be at best semi-permanant; even a dirigible would eventually need patches, spare parts and always would be dependent on resupply from orbit even if it could grow it's own food and make water (Not hard when you're literally SURROUNDED by Hydrogen and need Oxygen for breathing gas anyway). In a way if Gas Giant mining is ever a thing; i think it's going to resemble Oil Derricks of all things. Something that could be assembled quickly, moved as needed, support a small crew to do the dirty jobs, then either sink beneath the waves or be recovered. Orbital stations would constantly monitor the "Cloud stations" and provide support, prepare crews for transfer/rotation, and take on supplies from freighters while providing a place for tankers to berth and take on the valuable Hydrogen cargo.
-
Is there any way to get lift in an atmosphere of mostly Hydrogen from airfoils? If so you might just be better off brute-forcing the issue by making a massive Fusion/Fission powered plane with Nuclear Thermal Jet Engines and flying around the planet on a regular pattern/schedule.

Early Access for KSP2 ?
Incarnation of Chaos replied to Darkstar_IE's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
Let's just cut straight to the point; KSP2 will have bugs upon release regardless of how they decide to move forward. KSP2 is also not a novel, new concept or a different take or twist on a established genre being made by a independent studio. KSP2 doesn't need EA for security, as they have the backing of the publisher. KSP2 doesn't need EA for bug fixes either; those reports will come to them regardless. The only reason KSP2 would consider EA is greed at this point; plain and simple. -

I just make my interplanetary probes with enough reserve DV to become relays at the Target. It's rather lucrative considering you can do it for about 30-50K for the probe, and the entire stack with launcher often doesn't pass 70K. Take a 300K "x 3 course" contract on top of whatever else and you can net a interplanetary relay and up to 300-600k depending on the contract and stack. -

Distance would still make them useless, and all the dishes in the world won't help if kerbin is behind the sun. You'd still end up having to launch another relay to another planet at some point. -
They do, but remember that those runways were also built. Unless they restrict the size of a given construction the player can have (Really doubtful if they're planning on entire REFINERYS) then your runway is just limited by materials and time. All said though; you won't find me saying no to some arrestor wires and tail hooks.

why dont jool and eeloo collide?
Incarnation of Chaos replied to minerbat's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Pluto is so far out though that wouldn't it just be ejected into a hyperbolic trajectory out of the Sol system in this case? Or are you more alluding to a Rogue Pluto being catapulted into the inner Solar System being a very bad thing xD -
It doesn't cross my mind as that odd; especially if the original game didn't actually own all of it's assets and there were licensing issues with obtaining them for the sequel. Sometimes it's better to just start fresh than wait for lawyers to hash it out; or use placeholders while said lawyers hash it out. Regardless; it's good to know KSP2's devs don't have that to worry about currently.

KSP 2 - Multi-core optimization?
Incarnation of Chaos replied to saxappeal89129's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
Or make a completely unrelated, but still thematic game. Basically a KSP fallout shelter; hell you could even tie it into the main game by letting the success of your "colony" enable you to transfer the excess population to a live KSP2 save. Or promote kerbals, run long term experiments and mine resources while basically AFK... Oh God what kind of monster have i created..... -
KSP 2 - Multi-core optimization?
Incarnation of Chaos replied to saxappeal89129's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
They'd add lootboxes before even attempting a mobile port; it's not like a game like COD or similar where you can just scale down the textures and the size of the map and be good to go. KSP is an entirely different beast, and the discussion in this thread here demonstrates it well. It's not that i don't think there's any money to be made from mobile; on the contrary that's where the bulk of it is currently. It's that if all you want is a skinner box disguised as a game to milk whales for cash; that's much easier to do with literally any other game. -
KSP 2 - Multi-core optimization?
Incarnation of Chaos replied to saxappeal89129's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
That's what they plan to do with their physics LOD; selectively treating groups of relatively stable parts as a single part for the purposes of physics calculations. -

Have they mentioned anything about terrain deformation? That's another way they could accomplish this that i didn't even think about. -
KSP 2 - Multi-core optimization?
Incarnation of Chaos replied to saxappeal89129's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
Rigid-Body Simulation is the primary bottleneck currently though; most everything else has already been dumped onto other cores already. So while there may still be gains to be had in these other areas; especially with a clean slate. The most demanding, and therefore the most performance-limiting part of KSP is the interaction of parts with each other. That's what i believe he's attempting to communicate. -

Instead of not being able to have any form of support for structures other than grappling terrain; it means that you can have things like piles, piers and columms driven into the "Ground" which will keep structures far more secure. It'll also likely introduce more Krackens doh -

Likely that they're using multiple layers to represent terrain instead of just one, so there's "Deeper" ground instead of just a paper sphere and nothing but the endless void underneath. -
Explorable, interactive ship interiors!

What about making a creation-kit like application solely for creating IVAs? Have pre-made kit pieces or the option to roll your own and import them. -
KSP 2 - Multi-core optimization?
Incarnation of Chaos replied to saxappeal89129's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
And the console version is basically half-broken at all times, and it's using a x86 CPU! So you can imagine the hilariously bad results that would come from porting a heavily single threaded game to ARM just from that. -

You didn't, but Gearbox was responsible for the development of Borderlands 3. So you're effectively saying that a company who didn't develop a game did with your post, and let's go ahead and pull up a definition here shall we. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/straw man Definition 1 " a weak or imaginary opposition (such as an argument or adversary) set up only to be easily confuted " You made a comment; that comment didn't actually address my actual statement. Instead it addressed a statement you made intentionally to make mine look as ludicrous as possible. I replied; stating why i didn't agree with it. Pointing out that 2K wasn't developing either game; directly addressing this statement. You replied; saying that i'm strawmanning and you didn't use that word. Which actually is just another form of strawmanning ironically. So; since this has already gotten beyond reasonable levels and is rapidly becoming OT i won't be replying to anything else unless it directly addresses the statement "The developers of KSP2 only exist because their parent company allows them to" Notice i didn't use most of those words in my actual post; it's known as "Paraphrasing". Have a nice day. -

Saying that a company developed a game that didn't actually develop it is far removed from saying that a studio under a brand controlled by a company only exists as long as they continue to please said company. So you would; because this is the very definition of a strawman.
