However, while I can't say I recommend planetary destruction as a selling point, there are indeed some practical uses for beams and balls of destruction. Particularly in the mining industry, where an uninhabited planet could be easily shattered into an asteroid cloud making it far easier to harvest metals from.

From what the pictures so far are suggesting, I don't think any kind of unstoppable hyperweapon from the distant future is really relevant to this project or on topic for this thread. Looking at the images produced thus far, it suggests some type of vacation or new life on Laythe from the perspective of a young person writing to their relatives back home. Not really the kind of setting for such war-like equipment. Although no reports have been filed regarding that, if chobit-389 wants I could remove said offtopic posts. Please keep to the topic at hand, this is about the Postcards from Laythe project. You're welcome to make your own topic elsewhere on the forum (perhaps in the science section) to develop this fusion cannon.

My earlier post on page 1 details the biggest technical barriers with multiplayer. As far as griefing goes, these servers would be required to use some type of system to restrict who can login for multiple reasons: One is you won't be able to put more than maybe 3-4 people on a server at a time without enormous computing power because of the sheer amount of math involved in simultaneously calculating the physics for four vessels. The other is to control griefing. You'll only want to do this with people you know well, that aren't going to grief you in ways that mess you up any more than docking practical jokes onto your station that you can easily dispose of. As far as the status of the thread goes, while multiplayer does score quite high on the do not suggest list, as long as people discuss it in a civilized manner covering the advantages and drawbacks as well as technical details and possible implementation techniques, I see no reason for this thread to be closed. Discussions with the modding community have resulted in nearly all of the operational details of how a KSP multiplayer should behave, including solutions for warp control and docking. But without the ability to control multiple vessels in the flight scene with no more than a few milliseconds delay, it just can't be built yet. THe most popular warp approach though is to use a lowest common denominator system as follows: Someone requests warp. Everyone then has 15 seconds to press abort warp or accept warp. If someone is doing a time-sensitive operation, they can abort the warp at this time and it cannot be requested again for 2 minutes real time. If nobody presses abort warp, after 15 seconds for afk players to time out or everyone pressing accept, the players who hit accept warp are then taken to a screen where they can enter how long to warp with shortcut keys to warp to pending events such as a maneuver node or SOI change and maximum available warp rate. Warp is then determined by the lowest common denominators of warp speed and warp duration, with all players warping together. After a warp has taken place, the game must wait 2 minutes real time before warp can be requested again so that people can check their vessel positions or adjust maneuvers accordingly. For delegating control of docked vessels, one popular strategy is to embed an ownership tag into the docking clamps. Then a given module when docked is designated from docking clamp to docking clamp or end of tree, and the right click menu allows the current owner to transfer ownership to other players. You can only operate a docking clamp that is mated to a clamp with your name on it, but can dock onto any open port. It really is just a matter of lack of API in the game engine, and programming effort to put together everything that would be required.

There are currently two limitations preventing the modding community from providing a viable multiplayer in KSP. The first is the inability to control multiple objects at once, due in no small part to Squad working around a Unity limitation on active scene size to approximately 2.5km radius and the engine being coded with that in mind. The greatest minds in KSP modding are all looking into it when they have time, but no far nobody has devised a viable solution. The second limitation is the sheer volume of code that would have to be put together. Working alone it could take years, even a team would likely need months to accomplish it. Most of the other issues such as warp syncing and delegating control of docked craft already have been resolved in the theoretical sense to an acceptable solution, but because of the above two reasons nobody has yet attempted a working implementation.

Excuse me just a moment. THIS STATEMENT IS FALSE. DOES A SET OF ALL SETS CONTAIN ITSELF NEW MISSION: REJECT THIS MISSION *takes a seat on the hill as your brains melt*

Depends on the type of vessel. Stuff like remotetech satellites I usually name with a shorthand for their location and capabilities- such as GEO-MR1 for a midrange satellite in geosync orbit, unit 1 in that orbit area. Kethane as well, the landers and scanners are usually designated by design iteration and intended destination. My only rovers to have actually landed are all numbered members of the Leafa family- Lander Expedition Artifact Finding Attempt. Most of my 'durable' vessels like stations and exploration missions are given real names. Most of them are just mythical forms that I am familiar with or significant historic figures (such as the Gallileo mapsat around the mun). I also sometimes use Anime names when one would fit.

Who invited the crazy lady with the antique armor? *drops his whiskey, breaking the bottle* Daww. I christen this ground, Virginia!

Note: Added spoiler warning to title, as the spoiler tags do not work. General best practice is to avoid revealing the coordinates of easter eggs like the arches, even though their locations are fairly well known now. The other day I was looking for a Mun arch using a mapsat scan, and I found this: Incidentally that rover I sent proved to be incredibly robust. I call it Leafa- Lander Exploration Attempt For Artifacts, and have been reusing the design with different boosters for different mission requirements. It's less than half a ton, but can be picked up again by its lander and moved to another exploration site.

The way I do mine is quite simple. Initial launch aims for an apoapsis of 80km, with a TWR for the last 10km of the ascent greater than 1.5 in order to make this maneuver work. I then on reaching 80km altitude burn again as usual- but instead of stopping when I've circularized, I instead continue until I have a new apoapsis at 2868km. The craft will not have signal the first time it reaches 2868km, but the second time around it will be over KSC. At that point you can circularize it at 2868km altitude, giving you a geosync comsat on your first launch in a new save file. Typically the craft I use for this are ultra lightweight, on order of 0.1 tons or less. Though you really could do it with any design as long as you can maintain a >1 TWR the whole time so that the burns take place before it loses contact or moves out of position. Step 1 80km initial apoapsis Step 2 Raise apoapsis to 2868km after reaching 80km Step 3 On the second pass, KSC is below the satellite. Circularize at 2868km for your geosync orbit. Typical booster and payload Ultralight comsat for LKO and Geosync coverage I usually put 3 such satellites 120 degrees apart in geosync, accuracy is important as the more precise you are the longer they last. once all three are up, I then start adding heavier craft with greater capabilities to expand my coverage area.

Something like this. There are no lifeforms in KSP other than the Kerbals and plant life on their homeworld, and Squad has made it clear that they probably will not change that at any time in the near future. The arches seem to be natural formations, at least three of them are known to exist on the Mun along with other points of interest. You'll also come across things like these in your explorations. No I will not tell you their coordinates, that takes all the fun out of it. And the Mun isn't the only planet to have such easter eggs. Almost every body in the Kerbin system has at least one. Happy exploring.

Banned for not playing that smooth Jazz.

It'd have to be quite the satellite. Most currently orbiting satellites are so small that they vaporize during re-entry, only the really big ones are likely to have major components survive. I'd have more fun with it leaving it where it is in orbit, since if it falls it'd be destroyed.

The Kerbals are getting flags in the next update!

And here I just visited 3 landmarks last night. Though I left the rover motherships stationed near them, it'll be nice to mark them properly rather than having to walk a few hundred meters from where the rover landers came down over to the actual landmark. -
They seem to have fixed the glitch in it at least. Also the quota has been lowered, so you only need 3-4 posts now to be moved up. It usually doesn't take long, but please avoid spamming or power posting to do it- said posts will be deleted instead of approved, and will not count.

Banned because those postcards probably take a long time to get to Kerbin from Laythe, the way the mailships are.

Banned because Kilroy was here.

It isn't really possible to enter Kerbin orbit without using a rocket of some type to raise your periapsis out of the atmosphere. However, if you can reach escape velocity using your turbojet bundle, you can indeed enter solar orbit on jet propulsion only.

Postcards from Laythe - Cancelled indefinately

Sounds like a good plan. Then images that are okay to be here can be linked to from here, while people who want to see more involved content can browse through your own site to get it. Also, I might take the time to read through your series myself. From the little bits I've seen of it while discussing it with people, it does look like an entertaining story. -
I was searching for a Mun Arch using the Leafa-III rover, and I came across this...
