It's not for the sticker. It's all for the challenge But yea, the plugin ban and altitude limit are there for the added difficulty. You don't need to uninstall the plugins, just don't use it and hide it in plain sight. Actually the original altitude cap was 30,000m, but I've lowered it down to 25km because of some people taking advantage of it (and given that I didn't touched the 25km mark on my attempt). Test of patience, skill, and determination right here...

Learning to dock by using MechJeb first before doing it by yourself is like teaching yourself how to drive a car with an automatic transmission, only to drive a car with a manual transmission later: You'll have a hard time transitioning.

Well ask people here and they'll say that Laythe is their favorite place to go (and it's not even a planet, but a moon!). You can find tons of Laythe-related challenges, artworks, and mission reports around here. Duna? Ehh... not that much. I have asked why before (thread got lost in the April Derp) and they gave me tons of reasons (primarily because of its Kerbin-like vibe, and jet engines).
