The one I was trying to get to fly was just running out of runway...and grass. It acted like i really wanted to fly, but couldn't get enough speed in time. I was trying to use poodle engines, just couldn't get enough speed. That said, I started from scratch and came up with a design that does get into the air. But sucks up fuel like its going out of style. This new one uses 2 aerospikes. I'll get some screenshots in a moment. Edit: 2nd Edit: 3rd edit: I can confirm that this thing glides like a sack of batteries. that is to say, the only forward motion that I can see comes from the egines momenum. besides that, when you turn them off, it drops like a stone.

hm, I was going to try along these lines. 1. Make a rocket powered plane that will fly on kerbin (doign that now, harder then it sounds) 2. Import said plane into the vab, and attach it to a rocket. 3. test to make sure it can glide down on kerbin 4. send it to eve and see what happens. I have been using probes to pilot these things. I can't even seem to make a rocket powered plane that will take off period. But I'll keep at it. Anyone else ever make a plane to do just this? Edit: Luuko, nice shuttle. Oh, if it helps anyone, I'm trying to do this with vanilla parts. no mods.

Hello all, I was watching scott manley's eve or bust episode. And a thought occured to me. Eve had a think and large atmosphere. Atmospheres allow for quite a bit of gliding with winged aircraft. So...space plane on eve. Has anyone ever tried a rocket powered space plane on eve?

Hello all, I know one feature of this new release is now you have to bring kerbals home the old fashioned way rather then just hitting 'end flight' button. But I just crashed an experimental lander into the water, and the capsule with the kerbals survived. They landed intact, and are just floating in the middle of the ocean. I want to bring them back to the ksc, and use them again, but there is no longer a 'end flight' button. Is there another way of getting them to a different flight?

yea, see thats my problem. I can get a shuttle up with the single engine on the back. but I'm trying for the real thing, the tricoupler holding the 3 engines, and the 2 side mouting engines next to the tail fin. I'd be willing to swap out the solid boosters with fuel ones, but it doesn't seem to matter. Edit: well I downloaded the rocket above. That seems like cheating to me, using the main fuel tank as its own rocket...I'm going to keep trying to get a shuttle in orbit w/out relying on the main fuel tank for thrust. I have started to use single engine shuttles, I can get them into the air, but not out of atmo...

cool! so instead of solid boosters that uses fuel rockets on the sides? and does that use the 5 rockets on the base of the shuttle itself?
-
I'm trying to build a shuttle that looks and behaves just like the real thing in 0.17. I was curious to see if anyone had managed this? 2 solid boosters on the sides of a giant fuel tank, attached to the under belley of the shuttle. I can get something that looks remarkably similar to the shuttle, but it always tips over just after launch. quite often it does a nose dive into the ground. mind you, I'm using no mods. just the stock parts.

can you turn on peristant debris?
mattig89ch replied to mattig89ch's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
oh, maybe thats why I thought it went poof. no, I didn't go back and check. Admittedly, didn't think to double check where I landed. I thought it just disappeared, maybe its still there...is there a way to have the debris with nothing near it show up on the map? I think the best I could do is go back to my ship still in orbit, but I think i left it 30k above the surface. I understand that having it orbit around 2k means it could crash into a mountain. -
can you turn on peristant debris?

Oh that slider I set to 50 ages ago. debris still disapears on me. I think the last time I watched, it got to 3K before going poof. -
can you turn on peristant debris?

Hey all, simple enough question. I built my mun lander in 0.16, and i wanted to have the landing stage stay on the mun/minmus as proof that I was there (kinda like how the apollo missions left stuff behind at their landing sites). But now it seems that when you get a certain distance away from debris, it disapears. Is there anyway to turn it on? -
Any ship that can go to the mun?
mattig89ch replied to Felipe_Unique's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
were you just trying to get to the mun? or were you trying to land? -
hey all, I was watching this guy on youtube called scott manley. and he was launching unmanned ships into orbit. I wanted to try something similar, but I can't figure out how to get the camera to focus on the rocket once launched. it gets a few k away and disappears. is there a default control to switch between camera focuses? or is there a mod?

0.16 Is even more challeng(er)ing
mattig89ch replied to Captain Lou's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
having come in at 1.5, I\'m finding the difficulty just shot up. I\'m debating on whether I should take my old rocket designs that gained orbit, and lunar orbit and try them with this update, just to see if they\'ll still work. -
Regarding Mun Rovers
mattig89ch replied to mattig89ch's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
this is what I\'m trying to land. I don\'t think i\'m re-inventing the wheel here. from what i\'ve seen (on youtube mind you) its pretty standard. Currently trying to sort out the other stanges... -

Regarding Mun Rovers
mattig89ch replied to mattig89ch's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
yea, but wheres the fun in cheating? I wanna be able to build a rocket that\'ll take me anywhere I wanna go. Hence my question on whether jet fuel was better then rocket fuel. Since jet fuel is lighter, I might be able to gain more altitude on my first stage, then use the second stage to run around the solar system, use my third stage to land, and the final to get me back home. But then, it doesn\'t really help me if I don\'t get the same amount of fuel per can. -
Regarding Mun Rovers
mattig89ch replied to mattig89ch's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I acually managed to make it to the mun, but I didn\'t land so much as fall onto the 4 wheels. used the smallest engine to run around. managed to run up a hill, got airborne for a few seconds then went into a nose dive into the ground. Edit: just to be clear, it took me 2 hours, and 6 loading quick saves to just hit the surface and survive. heres a quick question. Is jet fuel, superior to rocket fuel? it seems lighter, but i\'m not sure jet fuel cans contain the same amount of fuel that rocket fuel cans do. -
Regarding Mun Rovers
mattig89ch replied to mattig89ch's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
cool, thanks. man, landing on the mun is hard. harder then the videos on youtube made it look. -
I\'ve heard of a few people putting rovers on the mun, and the second orbital body (can\'t remember the name). But I\'ve been wondering, how do you make a rover with the default parts? Or are they talking about mods? I\'m up to date, but I don\'t see any parts that would make a rover.
