How many ones' climbed the flagpole on KSC?
sporkafife replied to Cesrate's topic in KSP1 Discussion
As nAssailant said, it's been possible to climb the flag pole since it's introduction in .20 I've sent a Kerbal up it for giggles, but there really isn't much point as you can't stand on top of the flag pole. I have Jeb standing on that one container near the launch pad though, he surveys every launch and decides if they need more boosters -
There are a few things about KSP I learned from Scott, and a few little tips I still learn to this day about certain manoeuvres. I already knew a lot of the basics about orbits, landing and rendezvous before getting addicted to his videos so I mainly watch his videos for entertainment purposes and the fact that he's hilarious rather than to learn stuff

After the mod is completed, it will have to be balanced to make sure it is useful. If there isn't a delta-v or cost benefit to launching this tank and the refit module over just launching a fuel tank with a hitch hiker module then it will be completely useless. Except for the novelty I guess... and looking nice, as Novas parts always do

Hi, I paid for and downloaded the Kerbalizer app for Android when it was released, and with the best wishes in the world to the guys at Squad... it's a completely terrible unresponsive mess on my 1st gen Nexus 7. It's slow, doesn't respond to my inputs, and the rare times it does eventually respond it often selects an object on a completely different part of the screen. Rotating the Kerbal works... occasionally... and for a fraction of a second at a time. And I've never even managed to get far enough to save my Kerbal to Facebook or whatever, so who knows if that part of the app actually works. At first I thought this may just be teething problems, but there has never been an update to even try and iron out these links Today I thought I would check how the app runs on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus, in case it's just my tablet that couldn't run it properly for whatever reason, but trying to download from the store gives a "couldn't install on USB storage or SD card" or an "incorrect package file" error. Is it still even supported? Is there ever any plans to update it or will this dead app remain on the Play Store for eternity? I bought the app to support Squad, and for that reason I'm not asking for a refund or anything. All I want to know is will this app ever see love, or is it a lost cause?

Good Basic Design For Space Station?
sporkafife replied to potoes6's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
If your computer struggles and lags a bit when looking at Kerbin in LKO (I know mine does), try putting your station high enough that the game engine loads the lower res Kerbin model. I think it does this at around 170km and it really helps reduce lag when docking. -
I can only say my most played steam games, but I have played on my PS3 a lot more, so my most played games would probably be the Gran Turismo and CoD series. My most played steam game by a wide margin is Left 4 Dead 2 with about 350 hours... Lmao. Kerbal Space program shares a close second place with GTA San Andreas and they are both around 70 hours, but that doesn't include the many hours I played KSP before transferring it to steam, and it is probably a lot closer to L4D2 than I would admit to

I know it's impossible with the game's physics to deorbit any object, but I'm loving the theoretical discussion and the juicy maths detailing how crazy your ship would have to be to do it

My Aunt Died. Here's a memorial to her.
sporkafife replied to Whirligig Girl's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Aww, what a lovely idea to remember a loved one About your stranded Kerbal, there might just be enough fuel to get into orbit. If not, there is enough fuel to get you off the surface and well on the way to orbit. Then you can use the ample amount of fuel in your Kerbal's EVA suit to bring him into orbit. I find it much easier to save a Kerbal stranded in a circular orbit than stranded on the surface. Although Mechjeb (or practice, neither of which I have lol) makes landing close to a surface target easily doable. -
What is at 7000 m in Kerbin atmosphere ?
sporkafife replied to ASnogarD's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Many of my larger asparagus staged vehicles suffer some sort of rotation on launch. It's probably because the ASAS we have at the moment isn't very well tuned to larger crafts. And the problem is always made worse when you drop any outer tanks, because it pulls the mass closer to the center of your rocket, increasing the rate of spin. Exactly the same as when a ballerina pulls their arms in to spin faster. Hopefully the upcoming SAS improvements will mean the computers are better at handling the spin. Edit: Ignore me, I completely misunderstood and thought you meant the craft was spinning on it's roll axis. One of the other responses about being aerodynamically unstable are probably true. Try moving all your canards to the back of the craft to increase the drag of the rear. -
Doodmon Kerman? Number one candidate for the most Jamaican Kerbal name "Dood mon, did you see that Kerbal fly mon!"

I haven't made a mod in KSP, but I have done a little bit of 3D modelling and sucked horrifically at it... and that looks like the easy part of mod making! They have to make sure everything works exactly the way it's supposed to and that the wheels spin correctly and things can fold away and it's all just crazy. Don't even get me started on how difficult plugins must be! Mod makers, we salute you.

Would Laythe be capable of sustaining Kerbal (or human) life?
sporkafife replied to Burke112's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Yeah, I imagine that Jool would have a pretty mean magnetic field that traps a lot of highly charged particles. But is it possible that Laythe can counteract this with it's own magnetic field? I'm not sure what sort of effect that would have, but the crazy interaction of the two magnetic fields might make life on Laythe feasible. -
In my experience, the PC is just as bad for issues like DRM and "always online" as the main consoles. In some cases the PC is worse, because it is much easier to sell "always online" to a PC consumer than a console consumer. Well, the problem is mainly Steam - Steam is like one huge DRM machine. For most of the games on steam, you buy it and you don't even own it, you have only payed for the privilege of licensing that game from the studio who made it. If the game becomes un-supported and the servers are switched off? Tough luck. You only paid for a license agreement, and that agreement clearly states the developer can withdraw online support at any time. At lease on a console (and I guess to a lesser extent, with some PC games) it is still possible to buy a disk and have full rights to do almost whatever you want with that game. You can play it on your console, your friends console, or sell it on and it will always work no matter how many times it swaps hands. You buy a disk based console game and it works (yes, online passes are a thing, but luckily it looks as though they are dying). There is so much wrong with how the gaming publishers of today are treating their consumers. DRM shows that the big studios just don't trust their consumers, and they see a people as just bunches of potential cash. And people are starting to realise this and not be taken as idiots any more. Many people didn't buy Sim City because it has un-necessary draconian DRM that actively interferes with gameplay in an extremely negative way, and that certainly hurt EA's reputation and wallet. Many people were willing to boycott the Xbox One simply because of its DRM rules and Microsoft 180d that decision. At least the consumers are finally being heard, even though it's already too late as almost every game you buy is swimming in online authentications and DRM.

I was playing Left 4 Dead 2 versus mode, when a guy on our team rage quit after the first round because we were losing by a couple of points. Of course before he quits he cusses out everyone on the team, claiming we're all noobs who should learn how to play the game properly - standard stuff. We all agreed as a team that he was in fact the noob who was too slow and not keeping up with us, and carried on playing. Later that evening, I happen to come across him again. The second I join the server he starts cussing me out again, and somehow convinces the server admin that I'm a complete noob who can't play the game. Even though at this point in time I have killed the most special infected on my team and we are extremely closely matched with the other team. So, despite being the best player on the team I suddenly get booted out of the game and receive a message from the server admin telling me I've been blacklisted from his server. So for whatever reason the server admin believed some random guy who was swearing and shouting instead of the guy who was keeping quiet and playing the game properly. I got the last laugh though, I messaged the server admin back explaining. I told him that the guy saying I was a terrible player was some butthurt noob who happened to loathe me because I just happened to be on a team with him when he threw his toys out of the pram and rage quit. I heard nothing for a little while, but about half an hour later I had a reply from the admin who said that after I was kicked, the team started losing horribly. And just like the earlier game, the noob had decided to blame it on his team before rage quitting. My server ban was removed, the admin apologised and asked if I wanted to join his game... I accepted and we kicked ass

Yep, they originally painted the ET (external tank) on the Space Shuttle white to reflect UV rays. They thought that, because the Space Shuttle spends a long time on the pad prior to launch, that UV radiation could damage the tank in some way. I think they only flew the white tank for STS-1 and STS-2, and for STS-3 they realised that the UV radiation didn't really pose a threat so they could leave the ET unpainted and save a couple hundred kg of weight at the same time.Personally I quite like the look of the white tanks. The contrast between the white orbiter and SRB's with the orange/rusty-brown tank is quite aesthetically pleasing, but I think the white ET just looked so much more elegant

Actually, I think the hack gravity option just severely reduces the amount of gravity, haven't done any tests but I still see a slight downwards acceleration and the map still shows elliptical orbits are possible around Kerbin.

Simplified Laws of thermodynamics: 0th law: you must play the game 1st law: you can't win the game 2nd law: you can't even break even 3rd law: there's not even a way to quit the game ^^^ so you can't increase the mass/energy content of the universe. Of course KSP doesn't model thermodynamics, in fact it hardly models physics But I'm sure they wouldn't let the infinite energy solar panel thing pass

Does anybody remember website called "SimNasa"
sporkafife replied to Pawelk198604's topic in The Lounge
I do not... but I am intrigued. Please anyone share more info if you have it -
Urmm... I can't remember the version number but I purchased and started playing KSP on the version before they added C7's space plane parts as stock... So is that 0.15? 0.14? I forget lol

Is the roll usually encountered on asparagus staged rockets? I have noticed with my own rockets that, because it is impossible to perfectly place struts, the engine and strut placement brings in a little bit of torque. This effect then increases as the outer stages lose fuel, like a spinning ballerina pulling their arms in makes them spin faster. The only real solution is to try and place struts as evenly as possible I guess...
-
I must admit to using "hack gravity" from the debug menu to test the RCS balance of my final stage spacecraft so they don't spaz out with ASAS on during docking. I guess this would be considered cheating by some people, but I don't want to launch 20 iterations of the same craft just to test RCS port placement

Why do kerbals speak in gibberish but write in English?
sporkafife replied to Derpie's topic in KSP1 Discussion
All of these explanations are just preposterous!!!! It's obvious what's happening! The Kerbal language is gibberish to us. And they just happen use strikingly similar characters to our Arabic alphabet, these letters are however pronounced entirely differently to how we would pronounce them. And to add another extreme level of coincidence, the combination of their gibberish language and their ludicrous pronunciation of an alphabet that is (by another hilarious coincidence!) identical to ours in written form, we end up with a language that sounds so different to ours, but is written down identically to modern human English -
Benefit of Solid Rockets over Liquid
sporkafife replied to Bunzmaster's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Strapping on some liquid fuel boosters that feed their fuel into the central stage that are jettisoned when they are empty (asparagus staging) is MUCH more efficient than strapping solid rocket boosters onto your rocket. Look at the "cost" on the part descriptions though. A liquid fuel tank and engine is many times more expensive than the SRBs in the game, which I'm pretty sure is also true for real life. This means that in career mode, SRBs will become much more useful for if you're low on the pennies -
what was the first thing you landed on (not in the kerbin system)
sporkafife replied to duncan1297's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Like most people, I went straight to Duna upon its release Even though I already knew getting to Eve took less delta-v, the whole similarity to a Mars mission was what initially drove me to Duna. I even spent many painstaking hours on the previous version building a large interplantery ship capable of getting to another planet, landing and then taking off and going home... and this was before I knew the nuclear engine would be released, so it relied massively on the pre-nerf aerospikes. -
Oh wow, I wonder when they added this scenario to the flight results screen. Is it new to 0.20. Because I'm pretty sure it never came up the hundreds of times I crashed Kerbals into Jool in previous versions *evil smile*
