Dust storm on Mars is threatening the Opportunity rover.

Wouldn't it be out of focus if it was on the lens? -

I will be pleasantly surprised if it comes out of that one still working. I don't think it will though. -

I have the same feeling. Not sure from where you would get carbon on Europa though.- 442 replies

Yes to both. -
Rocket Poster (NOW TAKING REQUESTS)

Yes, please. That would be great. Could you also make it without the background so I can apply my own? I promise I will share it here when I come up with something nice. -

6% is not much though. How much time does it take to make ammonia and how much time does it take to make methane? Besides, isn't methane easier to make anyway?- 442 replies

Rocket Poster (NOW TAKING REQUESTS)
Wjolcz replied to sevenperforce's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Not sure. Maybe Composite launchers/New Space? I just really like these 3 rockets and thought it would be interesting to have them side by side. How about having them side by side and Electron and NL-1 being zoomed in? I guess New Shepard instead of F9 could work too. Could you also make them horizontal so I can use it as a phone wallpaper? -

Nice posters. Really like them! What about this combo: Electron + LinkSpace New Line-1 + F9 Block 5? -
Cool cool. I want to see that cryovolcano in HD.

What's the problem here? If they find something of historical/archeological significance then they will simply not dig there. Or the government of the country/state simply won't care and they will dig right through it. And then people will be unhappy. Not a new thing. Gee, I wonder how my city got it's underground/metro/whatever-you-call-it railway system and it didn't get flooded even though it goes right below A FREAKING RIVER. Must be magic. It's not impossible. Sure, there are many difficulties, but drilling tunnels is not impossible.

It would be pretty cool if they could produce their own fuel on Earth. But since the BFR/BFS will be fully reusable even if they buy fuel and ship it they would probably charge less than for a F9 launch. BTW, does anyone know how much money will they be charging per launch? The fuel can't cost more than a brand new F9, right?

Got back to drawing recently Maybe this thread should be renamed to 'Show off your art' or something? BTW, do you guys know of any app/site you can draw together with other people?

400 pages and we're talking about cars. But with rocket thrusters. So I guess it's not that much of an offtop. Yeah, I too think retrothrust would be the best and most efficient way to stop a car in this situation. Also, when on slippery road I would much rather have wheel brakes AND thrust that doesn't depend on friction to stop myself from falling off a cliff or just bumping the side of my car.
-
I don't know. Maybe sophisticated ABS doesn't do the job any more. Besides, I don't think friction of the tires only would be good enough. Maybe the tires simply explode at these kinds of acceleration/de-acceleration. Or maybe he's just bored and wants a rocket car and the law doesn't forbid that.
-
Maybe they are doing both?
-
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaa...? I'm guessing that 'RCS' Tesla system will be mainly used by autopilot to brake. I'd imagine that since the next model is going to have crazy fast acceleration slowing down from such speeds will be problematic. So basically manned MKV with wheels.

Isn't the BFS planned to have a couple of big windows in front? Although I wouldn't be surprised if they got smaller as the development progresses.

How about the de-spin yoyos space probes use? They could deploy them and just bring them closer or farther whenever they need to spin faster/slower. Not sure how heavy they would have to be.
-
They wouldn't have to rotate it all the time. During the sleep time and/or bathroom hours would probably be enough and not noticable enough to puke and feel dizzy.
-
Oh, I'm dumb. I just remembered I thought of that a while ago but forgot about it now.
-
They could probably spin it faster. Not like it would fall apart. And even 1/10 of Earth's gravity wouldn't be bad. I'm not sure how will they keep solar cells aligned. There could be an arm with foldable solar panels that keeps facing the sun or batteries, or maybe even RTG.
-
Why not? There are advantages to spinning a spacecraft. Apollo did that to not overheat and astronauts would be able to sleep and do their nasty human toilet stuff relatively comfortably.

Maybe hiring a pilot and renting and modifying a helicopter costs more than renting and modifying a boat? Maybe catching it like that is too dangerous? Or the chords (or whatever you call these paraglider lines) attachments aren't strong enough to handle a helicopter grabbing it? Or maybe they want to catch the second stage like that too so it's just a part of the testing? There's probably a reason why they are doing it like this.
