There we go!

Yeah, it is turning into a Challenge thread isn\'t it? Okay, how do I move it? Uh... I think we require moderator assistance over here.
-
It IS a good point, having boundaries on as narrow stretches of land as possible makes well for distinguishing them- in fact I\'m not quite sure why I did it in the first place. Is it a small enough thing to change during the poll without affecting the map entirety as a whole? Not sure. Is it too much of a problem in the first place? Not sure \'bout that either. Maybe we\'ll have a poll... Also, Commander Zoom, You\'re not seeing it? As in it hasn\'t loaded for you, or something? I\'m not sure why this is... If at the end of the poll you still haven\'t been able to vote, I\'ll add your choice to the end results.

In the first Mars mission I threw together a Lander design intended for use of de-orbiting from LMO, landing on planet, and rendezvousing with engine module in LMO. CRAFT: Mars I Lander MISSION: Lander Test- Reach 4 kms, land, orbit Kerbin, land. CREW: Bill, Jebediah and Bob Kerman LAUNCH DATE: 20-06-12 NOTES: Successful landing, but engines required for final touchdown. 3 parachutes alone bring craft down to around 24m/s. Ship used ascent fuel to reach altitude required, resulting in insufficient fuel to achieve orbit. EVALUATION: More parachutes may remove need for semi-powered descent, and attach launch stage to lander to start simulation at the correct altitude without using ascent fuel.

The poll is up, vote now!

New Continent Naming Committee poll initiated, where should the continents be located? Go cast your vote!

NEW POLL INITIATED. Check the first two posts on this thread for details. If you\'re reading this and the poll hasn\'t actually started yet, don\'t panic! It ends in just a few hours, so I might as well post this now in preparation.

The means to get to 'Mars' and back Not entirely sure where to post this thread, so I\'m doing it here. I am creating a space program intended to establish the capabilities to land on another planet in the Kerbol system that has atmosphere, and return home intact. Basically, we need to think up and run a load of missions to prove we are capable of achieving this. I have thought of a few- getting progressively more ambitious, of course. [li]Reach 50kms, safely land, reach 50kms, safely land.[/li] [li]Get into orbit around Kerbin, land on Kerbin, get into orbit once more, and finally land once more. (Kerbin- 'Mars'- Kerbin)[/li] [li]Slingshot past the Mun and back to Kerbin, land on Kerbin, slingshot back past the Mun, and once again land safely. (Getting to 'Mars'- extra challenge[/li] If anyone would like to contribute more missions and/or thoughts I\'d appreciate them, as well as ship proposals and discussion. I encourage others to start up their own similar program, I can feel my own anticipation growing... Even if you guys decide you don\'t want to post anything, I\'ll likely be posting my own mission logs on this thread for those who are interested. Missions Undertaken so far: Lander Test- land safely from a near free fall, achieve orbit, land.

Indeed, this is just a community thing. We\'re naming and deciding on the locations of the continents just for us players to have a bearing on things. It is NOT canon, just something the community is putting together for themselves. Seeing as the Kerbin Geographic and Science Society has got pretty big, their gonna take the results we come up with and recognise them in their maps and such.

CRAFT: Innovation Mk3 MISSION: Craft Test- Reach 10km and safely abort. CREW: Bill, Jebediah, and Bob Kerman LAUNCH DATE: 15-06-12 NOTES: [li]Craft passed all pre-flight checks.[/li] [li]Upon launch two engines on the South side of the ship failed and detached.[/li] [li]At MET 000:00:00:02 the Craft collided with the launch tower and exploded.[/li] [li]No crew members survived.[/li] MISSION OUTCOME: Catastrophic Failure. Our condolences to the Kerman family.

We aren\'t using Roleplay names right from the bat. If it so happens that EVERYONE suggests roleplay names, then so be it. It is, at the end of the day, the community\'s majority vote and if most of the community are roleplayers then I\'m (as a non-roleplayer) not gonna argue. Also, I don\'t necessarily think only RP\'ers want borders. I want them because, out of interest, I want to know exactly where one continent ends and where one begins. We have these things in real life, so we might as well have them here. As Commander Zoom said, we\'re here to define things, so that\'s what we should do. Just an opinion.
-
This is the unofficial forum to decide things exactly like that. Poll, poll after poll. Once we have fully decided how many continents there should be, we\'ll decide whether or not we should have exact borders. As I mentioned in my most recent post, I am pro-border although I think they needn\'t be a massive deal- simply different shades of green to distinguish each continent. After we have decided that, the locations of them may begin. I suspect that this\'ll either be the quickest or the longest debate we\'ll have, as many people seem to be agreeing to a similar version to Radion\'s post (myself included once more). If we can\'t agree on that, it might turn into a bit of a competition with everyone arguing their own personal version. We\'ll see what happens.
-
Woah, a lot of very quick replies. Nice. While I don\'t disagree that the continents shouldn\'t have specific boundaries, I still think that we should at least do some slight colour changes on the map to indicate their rough location. If we had no visual reference as to their boundaries, it won\'t be obvious which continents a lot of islands on Kerbin fall under. Perhaps just different, subtle, shades of green. That way things aren\'t too \'set in stone\', and yet we shouldn\'t have the above problem. Finally, I\'m currently leaning towards Radion\'s suggestion for the continent locations. That mountain range seems too perfect to pass up and I\'m fine with all the other locations.

SUGGEST CONTINENT NAMES The last poll, including maps you may want to look at. The results are in for the Kerbin CNC\'s first poll, with wonderfully constructive results. 53 unique members cast their votes over a 7 day period, and we have a tie (Six had one more vote) between having: Five or Six continents. I think the reasoning is fairly straightforward, we can see that Kerbin\'s surface lends itself toward five distinct landmasses. If one or two weren\'t so damned big it\'d likely have been a clear majority for 5 continents, I\'m guessing. So, I am going to move the poll onto our next topic which should ultimately solve the debate between having either 5 or 6 continents. Where should these continents be? I\'m proposing two suggestions for both five and six, and a third option (as you can see in the poll above- click your vote!) is 'none of the above'. If you have your own preference, click that. These proposals are based off of replies posted on this thread. Without further ado: This is my personal choice. The only thing I really have to note is the fact that both 'continent 2' and 'continent 3' are subject HIGHLY to polar stretching. This basically means that by making a 3d sphere into a 2d map the north and south poles become distorted slightly and therefore seem larger than they actually are. Also, the border between 'continent 4' and '5', while over land, is suitable as there is a mountain range in that area that acts as a convenient separator. This second suggestion includes the addition of splitting 'continent 3' into two in order to create a sixth continent. This does divide up the land nicely, however my reasons against it are as follows. The border between 'continents 3 and 6' is over a large stretch of land (there is no convenient separator there) as opposed to the others bar one, and makes a sixth continent that\'s very small- especially in comparison to 'continent 2'. EDIT: This proposal is a bad idea guys, there\'s I reason why I haven\'t chosen it. Take a look at map view in the KSP and you\'ll realise just how small 'continent 6' actually is, it\'s minuscule. I really don\'t think it is a good decision, but of course it\'s your decision what to vote for. Just don\'t vote for this one. Last thing, we can decide which continents the islands should be a part of in a later poll. Vote above, reply below. Thanks guys. Now, moving on. Here\'s what I\'ve just posted about the current situation with the Continents. We need your suggestions. Reply with them below, and vote in the current poll if you haven\'t already done so above. Thanks.

POST YOUR CONTINENT NAME SUGGESTION BELOW IN A REPLY. (Continents 1, 2, and 4) I have been granted permission to decide, as fairly as possible, the names and locations of Kerbin\'s continents (and other relevant information) with the KSP community by the Kerbin Geographic And Science Society. Guess what? That\'s exactly what I\'m gonna do. MISSION: To decide on names and locations of Kerbin\'s continents. MISSION STATUS: 'Number of Continents?' Poll finished. 'Continents\' locations?' Poll initiated. The Committee\'s Kerbin Map- Current Draft This thread is quite simply the place to have your say on what Kerbin\'s continents are called, how many of them there are, and where they should be. We absolutely need your vote in all the polls you can enter into! By reading all this and not entering the poll you are giving up your say in what happens- as ultimately the poll shall have the final decision. See what the current poll is voting for BELOW! How \'it\' is going to work: Based on replies to this forum and the results of previous polls, I shall propose an answer to the current decision-to-be-made for reasons x, y and z, which shall be displayed on the post below this one, and everybody shall vote whether they agree or disagree with it in the poll. This may include more than one proposal, and of course the option to disagree with them all will be present. IMPORTANT: If you disagree with a proposal, let us know why in a reply! This way we can hope to spot trends in the opinions of the community and best prepare the next proposal to meet the majority of them. If we can\'t come to a decision after three or four new proposals a board of 10 chosen members shall be called upon to make the final decision in the particular matter. Right, that\'s about it. With any luck it\'ll never get that far- but it\'s best to be as prepared as possible. Now we need you to vote in the poll and reply stating your opinion on the current decision being made, thanks guys. -HOC (Naming Committe leader)

Ah, great idea. I\'ll go away and set up the thread now, and link to it when I do. I\'d recommend placing that link on the original message of this thread because that way whenever a member loads up the page they\'ll have a fighting chance of spotting what\'s going on and hopefully go to the poll. I\'m planning to have the various polls decide: 1: How many continents there should be 2: What their names should be 3: Where their borders should be (possibly in that order) The way I intend to do things is to propose an idea, and have members vote their opinion. The idea shall be largely taken from the responses on the thread. Eg: Here\'s where I propose we place the (now chosen- this is theoretical, keep up) continents\' borders, for reasons x, y and z. Poll: AGREE DISAGREE Should there be more than three tenths of the community who disagree, I\'ll take a look at the replies and once more formulate a new proposal to put through the system. \'3 tenths\' because settling for what only half or more of the community seems to want isn\'t all that fair- I\'m sure in most circumstances a better plan would yield more votes than that. All of the above is subject to change, as it is purely off of the top of my head. THREAD LINK: http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/index.php?topic=14371.0

Chapter five is out, and I had to replace my first reply to Vostok in order to keep it near the top if the page. Bad news: I forgot the 20,000 word limit. Good news: We just passed 20,000 words! Woohoo!

When I saw your description I chuckled to myself for hours afterwards, it\'s been on my mind ever since. It\'s A world... The next person shall superimpose a troll face onto a mushroom cloud, and post the image... *cough*

Sadly, the map is simply a cleaned-up version of the 'kerbinsites.jpg' togfox posted on the previous page. It was easy to do because everything at sea-level on Kerbin is... well... sea and there is a very distinct difference between land and sea. A Minmus map in the same style would be the next easiest one to make, but there is such a little difference between the frozen lakes and the surrounding land that I can\'t accurately judge what is land and what isn\'t. The Mun\'s craters are next, and that\'s the hardest because, being craters, they slope upwards and I can\'t call a definite edge. I\'m going to look out for other resources to make those maps, but I can\'t do it tonight. (probably)

Okay, well then! I\'d like to submit a name for a continent, if I may. I\'m not sure whether there are even continent borders yet, so I\'ll just say 'for this kind of area': Periculo. It means 'risk' in google translate\'s version of Latin... Pronunciation: peh-rick-you-low Attached map with name in general area...
