What is your favourite sci-fi/irl spacecraft, and why?
nothke replied to Asmosdeus's topic in The Lounge
Terran Battlecruiser from original Starcraft (not the new toy looking one) Click for a badass image! IRL probably the Shuttle, just cause it was so complicated, utterly pointless and expensive to run, but was incredibly flexible and a true engineering feat. In the more efficient light, I guess it's going to be the future SpaceX reusable launcher + crewed Dragon -
I love math! But I hate numbers!!! xD That's where my soul is torn apart in love for natural sciences xD In school whereever there was geometry, algebra I love it.. I loved all these logical parts. Arithmetics, I just can't do it! Cause it's all about MAGNITUDE and it's very linear. And the fact I can't think at the same time about 10 different numbers or remember them.. I have to write any addition subtraction, multiplication, on a paper, even if it's only 2 2-numbered numbers involved xD Remembering shapes and thinking in 2d or 3d or in graphs is much easier for me! =) However it could also be that I had a bad teacher in primary school where you had to learn to "quick count" in your head, so I didn't pick it up very good and it remained a gap in my life.

[WIP Plugin] Extraplanetary Space Centers!
nothke replied to skykooler's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
Great looking mod. This looks like another great opportunity to combine this with my KASPAR portable racks project. -
The texture IS .png. The problem, as I have noted before, is that there is the "shade" (the baked ambient occlusion) layer that should be placed on top of your artwork. You CAN edit original textures, but you will ruin the baked map. That's why you need to have a separate template and that layer on top. The shade is only used to make the model look better and more smooth. You could do it without, but it would be better with IMO. Also the boundaries are difficult to see cause they are slightly smaller than the shaded squares so it's a big help to have an ability to turn on a layer just to see where they exactly are. That is why I provided a separate layer (the second image) with the wireframe. It's just more helpful and might look better. But you can just edit the original .png-s if you want I think I will make a picture tutorial after all cause people are confused, and probably cause I don't explain very well with just words xD

[0.23.5] Hollow Structures & Hulls (Updated: 2014-04-09)
nothke replied to Alskari's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
The diameter right now is exactly 5m (in 1.25 rescale), but I will probably change it to 5m (1.0 rescale) so it could match the "Kerbal standard" and NovaPunch 5m parts. Except 1.0 rescale is smaller, and it's really nice to have them bigger =) so I am not sure which size they will be at the end, so don't plan anything yet xD The other thing is that this project stalled cause I am doing KASPAR right now. NEVER HEARD OF SKYLAB?? The biggest single-piece space station there was?? It's time to google and youtube something ahappydude =) And yes, you can make it as long as you want, it's fully modular (you can see a hitchhiker on the end here, I was using it as an inside room xD) -
[0.23.5] Hollow Structures & Hulls (Updated: 2014-04-09)
nothke replied to Alskari's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Skylab is my reference so I'm using a similar triangular mesh they've used. (in these images it's an old hex mesh texture) Except their middle shaft is hexagonal and matches triangles perfectly. Since my hull branches into quarters, a hexagonal shaft couldn't match on all sides, so I had to make it octagonal =( I have made a micro meteoroid shield, that's why the hull has 2 layers, so that Kerbals are protected inside =) There is about 5m diameter space inside. I am using the mesh part as a quad-coupler so I switch from full hull to quarter hull system (textures far from final) The inside of the airlock features a door, again a reference to Skylab rooms. But it you can see that both doors are open unrealistically, I was intending ingame to make it so that one door is open at a time, when pressurized, the inside is open, when unpressurized, the inside closes, you wait for pressure to drop and after that the outside opens. So the both doors are never open at the same time. So if Kerbals want to get in-out, they have to squeeze inside first =) -
[0.23.5] Hollow Structures & Hulls (Updated: 2014-04-09)
nothke replied to Alskari's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Oh god, I didn't see this mod! I have started making a Skylab looking mod veeery similar to this. It is a 6 meter diameter modular hull that can be branched into 4 quarter-pieces and each can be used for a specific purpose. I initially wanted to make just a way to store lots of fuel or spherified tanks, but then it grew into a modular system with hatches and an airlock here you can see the hull with one quarter taken out, and cargo holds exposed. With one quarter exposed you are able to go into the central shaft and enter the space inside -
Really nice pixel art! I can see you've used your Kerbol system flags =) Not really. I read now that they are used for animation similar to gifs. Is there a way to save it with layers, and do you think it would be actually practical? Hmm, the textures I posted to imgur didn't switch to .jpg they are still .png, and I don't see any compression artifacts, so it's good.

Here, save this image and open it in any image program you want. The second explains which side of the cube the squares face and where exactly the bounds are (everything colored in pink is not used on the model) If you are working in GIMP or other layer-capable image editor, put the image on top of your painting layer and put it into "multiple" blending mode so the shades darken the paint under it.
-
Sorry people! I am thinking how to solve the problem. The problem is that the layers are important and most image files (jpg, png, tga) don't store layers. Just one, that is..
-
Yeah, I should do a paint-friendlier version. Post some screens of your cube missions =)

Stage 2 pada u vodu.. bukvalno =) Iako lepo sleti, kako propadne u vodu, i motor i donji rezervoar nestane. Odvajanje centralnog Osprey-a (desno) i nose cap-a (zaokružen levo).

That's why I said give ALL the money to SpaceX, not just some..
-
I agree with ruiluth, to me, it's more fun to plan missions and build rockets that try hitting the right spot on the navball. Especially if you fly a lot of similar missions (like building a station in LKO). Except mechjeb is not reliable all the time so you need to control what it's doing. I find MJ 2 strange. I like that it's been packed into smaller box, so you don't have to put those funny animated parts. But some functions I think got more complicated, or more simplified, like the randevouz AP, I can't ONLY match planes, I need to wait for it to match planes and turn off AP.. Some people find piloting more fun, some people find planning more fun, there's everything for everyone! And that's why KSP is such a great game!
-
I'd give all the money to SpaceX, only people with some rational and courageous ideas.
-
MechJeb is good, but not reliable. I really use it "without looking" only on tested vehicles that I know will perform 99% as same as the previous flights. It could be a few things, try using "RCS balancer" (not sure if it works with docking AP). It could be also that the MechJeb is trying to dock with a spinning station, in which case it would spend lots of RCS, switch to station and SAS it (or use timewarp, a bit unrealistically). Also make sure that your RCS thrusters are positioned so you have them in all axis. I had a problem when I only placed thrusters on sides, so the ship couldn't translate left-right and docking AP was trying to move but couldn't so it wasted tonnes of RCS. After I've placed place-it-anywhere thrusters on sides it used very little fuel. Also try to balance it according to CoM as much as possible. Well, those are the things that come up to me right now, it could be anything really.

Ever wanted to turn space into an art gallery?! Want to commemorate an event or even throw ashes of your fallen Kerbal into Kerbol? Ooor just easily fill the orbits with junk? Now you can!! With Cubes for Peace! What is this? No, this is not an infomercial, this is a mini-project intended to make your KSP flights a bit more personal =) It gives you a 0.5x0.5x0.5 cube (inspired by cubeSATs) and lets you draw anything on it's 6 sides! Cubes stowed inside my shuttle aaand, they're gone =) How to make your own In the package you will find a template (.psd) with which you can make your own texture. When template is open, you can use the "wire/bounds" layer to see exactly where the face borders are, and make sure to paint in the "PAINT HERE!" layer (not obvious at all). Keep the "occlusion" layer on so you have a soft shade near the edges. To prepare the texture for KSP, you should duplicate the part folder, and change the name in .cfg to your liking. When you are finished making your art, save it as model000.png and put it inside the part folder. (hopefully this process will be simplified after we get flags in the next update) Update: If you are unable to open the .psd file, save the image under this text, open it in any image program you want and you could paint over it. But note that you will paint over the "shades". Therefore it is recomended to use a layer-capable image editor. If you are working in GIMP or other layer-capable image editor, put the image on top of your painting layer and put it into "multiple" blending mode so the shades darken the paint under it. The second image explains which side of the cube the squares face and where exactly the bounds are (everything colored in pink is not used on the model). Ok, so what's the use of this? There is absolutely no practical purpose. The idea came to me when I wanted to fill my shuttle with payload after already running out of ideas with stock parts and other mods.. And it would be cool to pack the Shuttle with something small. I remembered that in reality they send lots of cubeSATs onboard shuttles, to ISS or just join them to other satellites, and they're usually made/customized by students, so I got the idea to open it to the community Why "Cubes for peace"? I was listening to "Atoms for Peace" and it's the first thing that springed into my mind.. Yeah I know.. How "original" Well I thought it was a good name at the start so decided not to change it. This is a peacefull project after all xD CONTEST! I am opening a contest for including your artwork into the next version of the mod! Since the cubes will be selected, it should have some good reason, an inspiring drawing or just good art! You should also post a screenshot of your entry cube and post the texture here (keep it at 512x512 pixels). Download: http://www./?z781rwae88b8gj9
