  1. I think it's simply observation bias. There are more people. There are cities, industrial operations or tourists in areas up until recently almost devoid of human presence. And almost everyone carry communication\recording device nowadays When anything extraordinary happens, more often than not someone with a phone or a camera will be around to record or at least report it quickly.
  2. Yes, a nice long "FWWWOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSHHHHHHH!!!!" is much more preferable. Though... let's be honest here - we are wondering about the same thing right now: Does it smell like a fart, or not?
  3. That would have to be one hot flight. And a very energetic RUD at the end. But conspiracy theorists gonna conspiracy theorise.
  4. "Dear Governments: Space is trying to kill us with big rocks. Please don't cut money for space programs. We would like to not die in fiery inferno of impact event. Thank you. Your taxpayers."
  5. Just couple of hours ago a bright bolide was reported (and recorded) flying over Florida. It burst over the Cuba later, causing loud explosion, shattering windows and raining stones on the small city of Vinales (sp?). No casualties, but it looks like another near miss. https://nypost.com/2019/02/01/meteorite-hits-cuba-causing-loud-explosion/
  6. Now imagine it flying. Then imagine a proper stack of Starship\Superheavy taking off
  7. They are called "kufajka" or "fufajka" in Polish. And i can confirm such jacket is surprisingly effective cold weather attire for workers.
  8. Wow! StarHopper is that big? I mean, i've seen tiny peple next to it, but comparing it to Space Shuttle really bring things into perspective.
  9. Finally it flew! Nice view, too - thanks to clear sky
  10. I'm a simple man. Until company puts on the table a real, working piece of machinery, ready to be put on launchpad i do not consider them a real space company.
  11. Where I live, it's about time to finally take snow shovels from the shed And start complaining about the amount of snow to shovel out of driveway Seriously, though - this winter was pretty mild so far. And spring gets closer with every passing day! Joy!
  12. Or have a fuel depot in LEO, and send Starships up in SSTO mode when needed (or when there is a shortage of available SuperHeavies ) to be refuelled in space.
  13. Agreed. Placing full fuel tanks between solar farm and comm dishes would be criminal levels of stupid.
  14. It's a very deadly, very poisonous and radioactive substance - and we are happy we can now produce more of it, and faster. Space nerds are weird
  15. Yeahhhh, i'm not surprised. I had my doubts if relatively small probe can provide enough power to life support system (even that tiny) to keep the "passengers" alive for long. Or keep enough heat inside. Even if malfunction or miscalculation killed plants an insects early, they still wouldn't survive the first night. Likely. But hey - it was first try. Better luck next time
  16. If temperature dropped low enough so early, eggs became unviable before plants died. Fruit flies breed quickly, but they're not the hardest of species.
  17. Practical too. We were discussing methods of getting 9 meter big rockets from LA to Boca Chica some months ago. Now that problem disappeared
  18. So. Iran really wants to join ICBM club, huh? Let's be honest - no one pours billions of local monetary units into rocket R&D, being blissfully unaware rocket with orbital capability can be as well used to deliver explosive payload to almost anywhere.
  19. Rrrright. To paraphrase a comic book character: "Where's the money, honey?" Especially for the second point on the list. Especially with pulling out from commercial launch market. And... why exactly Russia would want a ban on commercial space mining? To protect their share of the market of strategic resources? Fat chance anyone relevant besides China will back Russia on this one.
  20. Situation is quite interesting. Underdog SpaceX managed to shoulder its way to the top of the market - with lowest launch prices, very capable and reliable (and as far as we know cheap) launcher. And they are already working very hard on a new rocket, that shapes up to be a total gamechanger. Blue Origins talks the talk (sparingly :P), but they have yet to present anything resembling a flying article. But what of the rest? ULA talks about Vulcan - but with estimated price of 200+ millions $ for one launch i doubt very much they will take back their share of the market. Arianespace, Roscosmos - they seem to be floundering, not really knowing what to do with this particular hot potato. Time will show if they will jump on innovation bandwagon, or will they cling to safety of government sponsored contracts. Times are a'changing, folks - and it is a good thing
  21. ^ This. Also, thanks to SpaceX efforts reuseable rockets are a fact. Yet only players on the market that are doing anything similiar is Blue Origins and that Chinese company. At this glacial rate companies like ULA or Arianespace will start thinking about reuseable (stainless steel) spaceships around the middle of century Granted, there are serious advantages to "Watch and wait." approach - but if you wait for too long, you might wake with hand in a chamber pot.
  22. A black hole shredding a star? I think i've seen this before... Ah, yes. I did:
  23. Fear not! As soon as BFR Starship proves itself to be reliable, safe and useful, Army and Air Force will be all over it like ants over picnic basket.
  24. I hope for a nice, bright comet After incredible spectacle of comets Hyakutake and Hale-Bopp, Northern hemisphere is still in the middle of a bad dry spell For the last couple of years comets worth mentioning all show up for Southerners
  25. Slowest download ever... and from longest away Patience is the name of the game. I, for one, have one question burning my mind - contact binary or just a very misshapen lump of rock?
