  1. Another option would be to use the Sunbeam Lazor to shoot the parachute off. It works in exactly the same way demonstrated by MBobrik and his engines. Install Romfarer LazorSystem & Sunbeam (also in the first post, look towards the bottom). Get close for accuracy, and profit!

Sunbeam can actually be downloaded from http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/sunbeam/

  2. how do you use git hub anyway?

i can never find a download anywhere

On the github website is a client. I don't use it. I use tortoise GIT, as I am familiar with tortoise (I use tortoise CVS, SVN, GIT & HG at work). This assumes you're using Windows though.

And this project really should use a change management system. Without it, it will fail.

  3. At the moment I have 6 active flights in Kerbin SoI, 3 in Duna SoI and 2 in Eve SoI, ALL of them have MJ2 onboard. I have done several other flights in Kerbin SoI that I didn't need to keep active. None of them have had exploding issues. I'm gonna guess that since this is a problem that just started getting reported, and its only a couple people, that it is not MJ2 doing this but another mod causing it.

How about Kerbol SOI? So, inbetween planets? Especially leaving Smart ASS turned on (pro-grade or whatever setting you prefer). This is where I have a feeling MJ causes problems (I'm still not 100% convinced, it could be KSP not helping matters also).

  4. I've also been suffering from this, mostly (I say mostly as I am not 100% sure) when switching to craft in Kerbol's SOI. At first, I thought it was the number of mods, so when it first started happening, I removed B9 & LLL (wasn't using them), and it seemed to be fixed... but... happened again to me last night. Well, I actually get two types of fault, and I have a feeling they are related:

    1) Not exploding, just disassembly. Parts falling off as the ship gets loaded and the physics are calculated (I assume anyway, cause the game goes real slow when loading the view - I have an i7 btw).

    2) NaN errors: ship starts loading (as above), and then everything goes NaN. Broken game at this point, cause the NaN values get saved to persistent, so you need to kill the process to save your save games.

I have a feeling it is MJ thats doing it, although I doubt the game is helping matters. The disassembly error I had last night was quite funny; the MJ AR case came off, and was floating away on quite a nice fast straight trajectory. Seems the calculations made during the initialisation of the craft as its loaded go totally nuts.

  5. any fix for exploding ships when switching targets while using MechJeb?

Actually, I've been noticing this also, especially when in the Kerbol SOI. I had one ship yesterday rip the MJ module off, which went floating off on a pretty decent straightline course. I wasn't 100% sure it was MJ doing it, but, if someone else has the same feeling... I also suffer from NaN errors when in Kerbol SOI. I had posted it in the support forum, but then I removed B9 & LLL, and things seemed ok. But, I got it again yesterday when switching to a craft in Kerbol SOI (just before the problem I mentioned above). All very strange.

Also, still no answer on my post about rover autopilot. Anyone got any tips to make the thing drive straight, even after hitting terrain?

  6. Currently, I have 2 going to Jool; one to Tylo, the other to Bop. First was launched, and used MJ for injection burn. Second launch, one day later, used Protractor and a manual burn. The Protractor launch will actually arrive 80 days ahead of MJ. Go figure :D

The most I had at once was 7, if I remember. Two to Gilly, two to Jool, Ike, Dres & Eeloo. Like Richy says, KAC really helps with all sorts of things, and not just the SOI, but for tracking mid course correction burns.

  7. Is there some secret in making the rover autopilot keep a heading? My first design had MJ on the side of the rover. In this case, the rover would just spin in circles. So, placing it on the back, seemed to keep it in a straight line... except when it hit the terrain (specifically on the Mun). Then the heading went off, and the autopilot would simply ignore the fact the steering error was -140.

Does MJ somehow interact with the probe body? I found this was also necessary for MJ to work, so I mounted one on my rover, on the top (the only place available for placing probes on a rover body part).

Any tips would be most welcome!

  8. I'm not with JPL, but I do work with JPL, on the Dawn mission. And I play KSP with mods too. What I do for a living actually led me to start making my mod, and although progress with other mods overtook my own (well done MC & Kethane!), I still want to see more science, and more "realism"; one of these days, I'll reboot my program again, and start using MC, Kethane, my own mod (!) and RemoteTech (plus MapSat of course).

The only thing missing is the ability to spot terminator crossings. If we could do that, then it would make camera mods more realistic.

  9. I should post an update as to what I've been doing. I did some work last weekend, as I posted previously, and I should have a new version ready for release soon. The coding was finished, I just want to test the code a bit, to make sure it still works!

Like I said before, I'll do some further work with MC in mind, and then I'll take a look at the latest Kethane, to see what can be done there.

  10. I've decided to stop working on the more complex parts of this mod for now, and stick with the basic parts and code I've developed.

This is due to the upcoming changes in the Kethane mod, and the excellent progress being made with Mission Controller.

I will work on making my mod more compatible with MC, by adding missions & rewards for the missions I have implemented.

If anyone wants to think of any other ideas which might fit in between MC & Kethane, then let me know, and I'll see what I can do.

  11. Not sure if you have been following the kethane thread, but kethane v0.6 is about to be released. It will have support for other resources, allowing other modders to add resources to the game via the kethane plugin. Not sure if that has any bearing on what your trying to do here, figured I'd mention it though.

Thanks for the tip. I'll need to check in on it, and see what's happening. It might be interesting to see how the Kethane mod is handling this for sure.

  12. Meanwhile, the robotic ones get shotdown like flies, and noone notices.

I'm part of the planetary science community, and I can tell you, the community noticed a while ago. Caused a hell of a stink. Some of my colleagues went to the hill in order to try and save some of the budget, but, neither the Congressional Committee or NASA itself were that interested in restoring the planetary science budget. And although I am part of this community, and my job relies partly on NASA funding, I am actually pleased they didn't restore the planetary science budget, and I'll tell you why in a bit.

I wonder how Europa Clipper is doing.

Cancelled. That's how its doing. This I know because the original plan was for two orbiters to go to Jupiter. The NASA orbiter was due to travel to Europa, and the ESA orbiter was due to go to Ganymede. NASA decided, about 18 months ago (if I remember rightly), that their probe to Europa was not happening. This put ESA in a bit of a tight spot, as they had expected to work together. ESA however, continued alone, and now have the mission JUICE. Still, JUICE is running on a fine line, we're hoping it flies.

And so, now as to why I think its a good thing NASA decided against reinstating the planetary science budget. Its gives a once in a generation chance for the manned program to move ahead. We haven't seen this kind of push since the Apollo days, and while the new program won't be run in the same way as Apollo (I doubt they'll get a blank chequebook!), its good to see the manned program get a chance. The only decision NASA really need to make now is, where they want to go. You have two sides currently; you have the Moon people, and the asteroid people. The asteroid people want to capture a small asteroid, and work with it in near-Lunar orbit.

To me personally, while it is cool that we can even consider moving a small asteroid, the point is... why? There's nothing more we can learn about small asteroids that we couldn't do with a robotic mission, within the Discovery or New Frontiers programs, at a fraction of the cost of what is being proposed right now. Basically, I'm hoping we go back to the Moon.

This argument between Moon & asteroid missions needs to be resolved quickly. Otherwise, the fractional infighting will go on too long, and will cost NASA money in the short term, impacting everything. So, to any interested Americans reading this; I suggest you pick your side, and contact your Congressman, Senators or whatever, and make your case. If the people can force their politicians to make a decision, this can only be a good thing.

My final thought is, while the budgets are getting smaller, it is certainly an exciting time for space in general.

  13. Something I discovered last week is that the latest MJ dev releases do a pretty good job of calculating interplanetary transfers, seemingly now using a very similar algorithm to Protractor. I actually had 6 flights in progress at once (2 to Moho, 2 to Jool, 1 to Dres and 1 to Eeloo), and in combination with Alarm Clock (which also now saves manoeuvre nodes calculated by MJ), was able to switch between flights pretty easily.

Actually, I did find that MJ wasn't quite as efficient as Protractor, but, pretty damn close. When I plotted my two flights to Jool, the first was done by MJ, and the 2nd was a manual burn using Protractor, about 1 1/2 days after the MJ burn. The later flight (done through Protractor) actually ended up arriving some 5 days before the MJ flight; both flights were in the order of 270 days or so to Jool.

I've not really added anything to answer the OP's question, except that he might want to consider controlling many different flights at the same time. This allows you to have things to do when warping time and your different flights waiting for their transfer windows.
