  1. That's a clever use for ion engines. May use the concept myself.
  2. Perikerb: Periapsis specifically when orbiting kerbin. Apokerb: see perikerb Kerbo-stationary orbit: An orbit that has the spacecraft stay in the exact same spot above kerbin at all times. (Kerbin specific) Kerbo-synchronous orbit: An orbit that has the same period as Kerbin's rotation, but does not stay in the exact same spot at all times. (Kerbin specific) Semi-Kerbo-synchronous orbit: An orbit with half the period of Kerbin's rotation. Will be over the same point at the same time each time kerbin rotates. Parking orbit: An orbit a craft is put on as a means to store it in space for future use. Direct accent: When between launch and transfer, parking orbits are not bothered with. Transfer orbit: An eliptical orbit used to move between one orbit and another, or to get to another body. RCS: Reaction Control System. Primarily for precision movements, or faster rotation compared to what can be achieved with a command pod or probe core's built in reaction wheels. Delta V: Change in velocity. Defines a rockets capability to accelerate and decelerate. TMR: Thrust to mass ratio. Determines how fast a rocket will accelerate when not slowed down by gravity or atmospheres. TWR: Thrust to weight ratio. Weight: The force experienced by an amount of mass due to gravity. Aerobreaking: Using a planet or moon's atmosphere to slow yourself down. Useful for achieving orbital capture, or modifying an orbit. Use with caution. Lithobreaking: Using a planet or moon's surface to slow yourself down. Not recommended for achieving orbital capture, or modifying orbits. Or for anything really. Relative velocity: The velocity of one object compared to another. That'll do for me.
  3. Depends. It will certainly help you put together that station you wanted to build, and designed yourself. But it may not be the best way if you want to dock by yourself. Or, it could show you how, and then you can copy what it did.
  4. As stated, any deadline would be pretty arbitrary. In some professions, they're critical, if machines need to be hired, or people are only available for a certain time, etc. But not when they're designing and publishing themselves. I'd love to not have deadlines, my design drawings are almost never perfect when it comes to presentation time. But uni works to a schedule, as a lot of stuff must fit within a semester, so meeting deadlines is important. (Unfortunately.) BTW, please don't feel like we're bombarding you, lots of us just have strong opinions about this kind of thing. (And we're now used to waiting in suspense.)
  5. At least it wasn't much of a problem here.
  6. Something similar happened to me the other day. I was making a massive stack or SRBs, using the alt + click and drag thing to copy large sections. Neither my SRBs or my decouplers would work, apart from manually activating them. No space today for that one.
  7. I don't think they believe in deadlines. They work on something until it's ready. I also get the impression the game has evolved, and may still do so, if they get ideas that would add stuff to the game. (I'm hoping they continue to add features , like more science and planet geology, so you can do all the things real space programs (hope to) do. But that's just my view.)
  8. Hi, I am wondering if it is possible to convert a vessel in the persistence file back into a craft file for modification in the VAB. I suspect it will be necessary to cut out all the position info, (crew will have been evacuated) but is there anything else that would make a craft in persistence different from one saved as a craft file? My motivation for doing this is adding parts to a "building" my Mun base. I just downloaded a life support mod, and have been phasing in the parts as I replace older missions with new. The problem is the base was ment to be permanent. The other problem is each "building" was made by modifying one default design, and wasn't saved individually, so I can't just reload then and hyperedit them to where the originals are. I would like to make it so it looks like they didn't change. Would copying from the persistence to make a craft file work? Your advice and expertise will be greatly appreciated.
  9. Those look great! And they'll fit neatly where the existing parts are! Will they overwrite the existing parts if I download them? (I don't want to deorbit my new station prematurely.)
  10. I hope we get a few unique cities. Just to keep things interesting. Imagine if they did have roads or rail, and you landed on them. Cars and trains would go right through your spaceship.
  11. Wow. If only there where easy ways to replicate that. My attempt to use a gravity assist to get to Moho cost more than a direct transfer, even with everything lined up. (As far as I could tell.)
  12. Needle like things was what I was thinking, but that works too. Totally going against what I said before, but I once had a dream where I landed on a strange planetoid with giant, vertical but with bends, grey noodle like coral things. If we're extremely lucky, I may draw a picture, and post it. It was covered with them, and very alien. Any life in them seemed long gone.
  13. Duna's a freezing, dry wasteland. Laythe may have to much radiation exposure, due to its location with in Jool's (likely) magetic feild, to have developed life, and even if it isn't, that's not to say something caused life to form there. I wouldn't mind finding fossilised bacteria,I'd like them to keep any evidence of life mysterious and intriguing like it is in our own solar system. Maybe a planet/dwarf/moon could have spikes for terrain. That'd be hard to land on. I'm still hoping for something where Kerbin's L3 point would be....
  14. No, that would be extra-terrestrial life. Not realistic enough. One life-hosting planet per system, I reckon.
  15. Derp. Didn't read the rules correctly. My bad.
  16. Palms would make sense, given that KSC is equatorial. Assuming similar conditions to Earth's tropics, which may not be the case. I've had temperature readings of 16 degrees, (C I assume.) which is quite cool.
  17. I wouldn't mind sleep animations, actually, should they decide to add them eventually.
  18. "Everything looks magical" (It was not a kerbal that I was landing on Eve in that earlier post, btw...) I'M ON FIRE! Oh My Gosh! A perfect dive! Use your helmet to keep the shockwave at bay!
  19. Anyone else do this? No matter what you do, you will never be as cool as this guy.
  20. Thanks to a botched install of the EVA parachutes mod.
  21. It's working! As I write, Seetop Kerman is diffing down slowly. Actually he just landed. He's a little wobbly, but still alive! Awesome! I can now jump from the station without dieing! Story/demonstration time. "I've had enough of this, I'm leaving." "Wehrwin, we've only been up here for 6 hours. We haven't got a capsule, and.. wait where are you going?" And so, using Kerbin's continents as a reference, Wehrwin pointed himself retrograde, and begun his deorbit burn. Then, with a little clever maneuvering, he set himself up for reentry, hoping the round shape of his helmet would push that hot, hot air away from his body. Coming in like superman! Oh my gosh, it's so hot, so hot! Way to late to bail now. Wehrwin recalls a dream he had where his parachute failed to open. This better work. Just a bit to wait now.. He's safe! Home again, first kerbal to return from orbit without a capsule, and live! Well done Wehrwin, and well done Vanguard technologies, whom he would like to thank for his safe touch down!
  22. A clone kerbal will annihilate other kerbals in a crew. This is because the part of the file that tells the game what kerbal is in the ship lists them as a number, which refers to where their details are in the crew list. But, as long as more than one don't get put in the same pod, you could have a ship of all Jebs. My Kerbal list of fame: First on Mun: Melmy Kerman First on Minmus: Bill Kerman First on Duna: Bill Kerman First on Dres: Jebediah Kerman First on Moho: Bob Kerman. Have not made manned flights to the rest yet.
  23. Over reacting. Be not ashamed, NASA uses autopilots. Just delete the magic computer part, you'll have nothing to feel bad about apart from the amount of RCS ORDA wastes. Try the attitude mode, it's closer to manual docking. (I still can't dock anything big on my own, without ORDA's help.) Consider it moving from easy mode to harder mode.
  24. It seems to be there... Is it 100% necessary to give the plug in with that address? I just put the parachute folder straight into the plugin data folder.
  25. Does it count if it's from a station?
