  1. To ease discussions on Plutonian geology and surface features, I made this map with the official unofficial names used by the New Horizons team. Still working on a Charon one.
  2. Beautiful 3D flyover of the Pluto close up image.
  3. It looks like Philae transmitters are not working properly.
  4. I'm really fascinated by the mysterious source that is powering (or has powered recently) resurfacing activities on Pluto. I don't think radioactive decay is strong enough to make tens of 11000 feet tall mountains in just a 150x150 km area and wipe out a great part of the craters (although this latter thing could also be explained by the surface-atmosphere interaction)
  5. Wow, someone's been doing some fancy 3D renderings.
  6. Sorry if these have already been published, please tell me and i'll remove them!
  7. FRIDAY?? OH COME ON 2 days wait?
  8. In 15 minutes we should be seeing the yellow photos in this image.
  9. No! They will be revealing the images in a press conference in just under an hour.
  10. Why, why do they have to share these photos?????
  11. New pic already!!! (not encounter day, but July 13th) - - - Updated - - - This should be the failsafe LORRI image I believe?
  12. New Horizons wasn't actually designed to collect so much data. Since its launch new moons have been discovered, and obviously that's a bit of extra science. Plus, as they said yesterday, they have discovered dozens of ways their instruments could collect even more data (for example after the Jupiter flyby they discovered Alice could also be used as a detector of some kind of particle I forget). Shouldn't make a huge difference, but still, it's more than they expected back in 2006 and when they were building it.
  13. Yes. When you travel for so much time in deep space you want as few moving parts as possible, so the antenna and all the instruments are almost 100% fixed. Can't point the antenna towards Earth and instruments towards Pluto at the same time. I'm guessing there would also be a few energy problems with that, but the main thing is in fact the s/c orientation. - - - Updated - - - Just found some interesting stats on PT1, PT2 and PT3, the 3 KBOs which could be visited by New Horizons (actually PT2 has already been discarded) Keep in mind New Horizons has 130 m/s left of Delta-V Paper
  14. I'll go get some sleep now. If anyone is going too, I suggest dreaming of how Pluto looks like close up. Tomorrow we'll know!
  15. signal received precisely @ 8:52:47
  16. Lol, the 10 year old girl asking Grunsfeld about the extended mission.
  17. Alice Bowman actually made a few tears run out of my eyes. Beautiful person, wish her the best.
  18. Sick burn from Bolden, with an arrm in a sling! "all my surgeon wanted to talk about last week was New Horizons. it was stange 'cause he's an army surgeon, and people from the army can't even spell new horizons."
  19. We actually just got some PEPSSI data in there too, not only telemetry. Even better!
  20. It's for moments like these that I love humanity
  21. Recorded expected amount of data!!
