100 tons to Mars? This rocket is going to be gigantic. Not just "big" but insanely massive. The Saturn V was 120 tons to just LEO and it weighed in at nearly 3 million tons. A moderate estimate would put this super rocket at over 4 million tons! How would the launch pad even support that and what would that sound like at launch?

I assume this has died?

Present opening starts at 8 AM so still 16 minutes. I think I'll print a Kerbal ornament next year to put on my tree. I do have a few mid 1900's scifi rockets on my tree already.

I think the line in California is part of the legend for the map I saw that and was surprised too.

Th magnetorquer would take up a bit of space on each of at least three walls all on different axes so that it could rotate the X, Y and Z of the cubesat if I'm imagining right because quite a while ago K^2 said we would line the edges of the frame with the coils giving us 3 10x10 cm coils.

Turns out a university in my city is launching a cubesat soon. From what I've seen it looks like it's going to be a 3U. Interesting that they happen to be planning at the same time as us.

Why don't phones have dual micro SD card slots?
dharak1 replied to dharak1's topic in Science & Spaceflight
My phone has a 5.5" 1440x2560 screen. By five an a half inches a 2k screen is worth it. You can get a similar density with HD on a 4.7 inch screen though so it's no necessary. And I do done weeks at a time with no internet access. I've spent 17 days without it before. I'll watch movies while I'm operating equipment so I can go through as many as 5 a day. It's always nice to have everything on device when you are in an area with shaky reception too. -

An ARA would help. I would prefer a whole phone though. A prebuilt phone with 2 SD card slots and on screen buttons would be workable for something like my phone. You could replace whatever is in the area with the buttons with SD card slots. -
Why don't phones have dual micro SD card slots?

~40 HD movies at around 3.5 Gb average. 140Gb of movies alone. If I have no service I can't stream them and the cost would be absurd even if I could because there is no WIFI in the mountains. If I had a 128Gb card it would almost not be enough. 160Gb is probably enough for now but farther into the future it may not be. This is without any 4k movies at all. -

The problem is I just can't get a bigger card. They don't exist. 128Gb is the largest you can buy. I only have a 64 right now but it's very close to full. I would gladly sacrifice a removable back and a few hundred mAh for another card slot and a bit more internal storage. -

Just actual movies and media in 4K. I can shoot 4K video at 30FPS or something but I don't use it. -

Well with the beginning of 4K movies coming around even with 128Gb of storage it wouldn't be enough for some people like me. I could have a phone with 128 internal and two 128Gb cards and It still wouldn't be enough. I'm sure you can buy 128Gb cards right now I've seen a few around I'm just waiting for 256Gb cards. There's already a 512Gb full size SD card. -
I've been wondering for a while now why there are no phones with 2 SD card slots. There are Dual SIM phones with SD slots so why not replace one SIM slot withan SD one? You could get much more storage with that.

I think a moving lens system is out of the question. Too many moving parts and it would take up too much space. A failure on one lens or all of them would leave us with an unusable or unfavorable camera. I say we either go with a microscope if it doesn't take up too much space or go with just a regular camera with no microscope. An external camera is an option if we have enough space and power for it. if the craft is spinning at 30 RPM that gives us a fairly slow spin speed and it would be possible to take pictures out of the sides.

In the words of Bane: " Step forward those who would serve. For an army will be raised." Just replace army with team and there you go. I'm glad the thread has managed to stay on the front page as long as it has.

Baikonur Cosmodrome Expedition 42 Launch
dharak1 replied to Aningaaq's topic in Science & Spaceflight
This was my first live rocket launch. It was awesome. I hope I get to see one in person some day. -
Wouldn't we need to run lots of current through them to do that? Could we supply the power for that?
-
Moon. Moon for sure. So close to us and it provides a nice warm glow while being a good place to grow food for us in the future.
-
If we really need radiators would it be possible to have some kind of corrugated or finned panel in the shade behind the solar panels to get rid of heat? even just two taking up half of a panel each centered behind solar panels should be good.
-
What kind of battery cpacity would we be looking at with this anyway? I took a look at cubesat batteries a while back and I remember they weren't quite astounding. If we shut down because of a lack of power could we get a full charge back after just 45 minutes of full exposure or would we have to wait a while before another transmission?
-
Just to clarify we would only transmit during sunlight minutes so that we can guarantee a charge before we go back around the dark side right?
-
My vote is for option 1 possibly with modifications. Option 1 gives us the most power with a fairly simple setup. It could also be modified to give us 3 panels instead of 5 at full exposure.

I've been feeling like building a base on the mun recently does anyone know any good mods for building bases? I've seen a few around like Kethane and the one that lets you transfer fuel with cables and hoses (KAS I think?) Does anyone know any other good mods for bases? Like things that let you dock parts on the ground so you can build a big sprawling base that's all connected. You can post your favorite base building mods below.

Looks like some kind of Oblivion mod. The movie not the game of course.
