When do you begin your gravity turn?
roosterr replied to Brainlord Mesomorph's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Exactly! It depends on the ship, so why base it on altitude at all? The greater the TWR, the sooner you can turn. -

So I was just watching NASA TV and saw KSP...
roosterr replied to sedativechunk's topic in KSP1 Discussion
It may not kill it, but it will for sure send the dev costs to the stratosphere while it becomes obsolete, then keep alive as long as possible. -

I think a simple labeling system would be great. create a name/description for each action group and then have an interface available to list the key bindings to the name/description of all of your action groups. This would help me remember which key was for which action.

The Kerbal way of rocket design (in Algodoo/phun)
roosterr replied to Tank2333's topic in The Lounge
We (my two young sons and I) play with Algodoo sometimes after I discovered it over a year ago. It is a lot of phun and there are some amazing creations found on youtube. I did build a poorly working trebuchet once. Otherwise my kids like to build cars and liquify things. -
Try youtube, there has got to be several out there to see. BUT, in a nutshell, build an efficient 2-3 stage rocket (you will have to toy with it a little to figure out a simple and efficient design), a single stage to orbit (SSTO) is very difficult for a novice. THEN, launch to about 10k altitude, kick the rocket over to about 45 degrees nice and slow like, lock your heading using T key, then go to map view (m key) and look at your apoapsis while it is growing. When it hits about 100k, hit the x button to kill your thrust. Wait until your rocket coasts to just under 100k, lay it on its side point right at the horizon, then go full throttle. If you have enough fuel at this point, you will get into orbit at about 2350 m/s speed. Go to map view and as soon as your apoapsis altitude and periapsis altitude are close to equal, kill your thrust and you will have a nice circular orbit

I'll second that.

I get it. Welcome back

I have mapped a network drive on my home network, to a flash drive added to my router. Then at good points in my play, I copy the "saves" folder from KSP to the network drive. This keeps a backup off my main computer. Alternatively you can do the same save on an external hard drive attached to your computer.

KSP makes people mistake you for a rocket scientist
roosterr replied to Firedtm's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Yep, been using FAR already for about 2 months, and have learned some great lessons. I like the aerodynamic failures too. SO, when I have a moment, I will settle on one. Thanks. -
I design to return debris as a BEST PRACTICE, unless impractical to do so. SO, I do have SOME debris floating about. And this is OK, it adds some realism to the experience. I am just glad that debris gets filtered out in the map view with the newer versions so selecting your ship is much easier than old version. With all that said, I HOPE someday I collide with a piece of debris, really. Not only for realism (like adding a real flaw variable to the sim), but because the odds of doing so are low. Note, I do NOT allow debris near my docking targets, ever.

It looks like FAR but stripped down. Same developer and all right? I will take your suggestion. Thanks. -
KSP makes people mistake you for a rocket scientist
roosterr replied to Firedtm's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Interesting that this post came up. About three days ago I met a semi-retired rocket scientist that worked for Raytheon, and helped Boeing design the Minuteman Missile back in the day. I got to talking to him and started speaking his language (I have recently begun to dissect FAR mod). He was enjoying the conversation and I began to think that he thought I was in his industry. So I quickly admitted I am self taught through KSP, then had to explain KSP. I thought he would just poo-poo our little "game", but instead he was fascinated and wrote it down and said he was looking forward to checking it our. He was sincere in that. We continued the conversation for at least another hour. He loved his old job, and whatever he is up to in the middle east (he wouldnt give details) that was related. SO, ya, if you are serious about KSP (get the FAR mod and LEARN why your rocket tumbles), your ARE educating yourself. -
Another gas giant with rings and moons would be a nice final touch. Also maybe another pluto like body really really far from kerbol woud be a nice challenge. Otherwise just making the existing planets/moons a little more interesting would be a big help.

Pruf that the Mun landing was a fake! The Konspiracy theorists were right.

If you are on Windows 7 or 8, get an external drive. The Backup and Recovery utility can take Virtual Machine (.VHD) snapshots at scheduled intervals. And it actually works very well (surprise). Future problem solved.

Funny, looks like its "right arm" is flipping us the bird. Anyone else see that?

This is a great post, and the most productive use of the "game". You sound like me beginning two years ago. I dont have time to provide you with links, but this game turned me on to gravity (the heart of orbital mechanics). YouTube is your friend, there are lots of video explanations about gravity out there. You would think gravity is a simple as an apple falling from a tree, but there is a lot more to it. It is simple, yet can be complex, and surprisingly fascinating. Once you have a grip on that concept, check out something called "Lagrange Points", which are like magical loopholes in the laws of gravity that exist around earth and our solar system, AND they will make sense to you once you understand gravity and orbital mechanics. Lastly, once you have the above understood, look into orbital mechanics vs. quantum mechanics, oh baby, talk nerdy to me I would have never guessed that I would ever find any of that interesting, but KSP opened that door, as well as other great things.

I love the Build Fly Dream video mentioned above. But if you have any true aerospace type nerd friends, this on at space.com is good. Although they show a dated version, but still a great epxlanation of KSP with gameplay: http://space.com/22166-build-and-fly-your-own-rockets-in-kerbal-space-program-video.html

.... been playin since .15, and yes, there was a great sense of ingenuity when you cobbled toghether rocket part to make a bullet train, or whatever. BUT all of the new gear, interface, planets, and the realism mods are awesome. So far, the evolution of KSP is nearly perfect. Although the career mode doesnt light my fire but otherwise, A+

Guilty. This could also include upper stage engines light off in combo with lower stage.
