  1. Hmm, not sure on your specific issue, but to find your logs in steam you right click KSP in Steam, click on Properties, then in the Properties box, click Local Files, then Browse Local Files. EDIT: Just found this in devnotes which could be something to do with your issue. States: " One of the issues that came up last week related to the way career mode generates random orbits with the new orbit code. To cut a long story short contracts were generating erroneous parameters with the new orbit code and saving them, causing persistent issues. To fix this, Brian (Arsonide) edited the orbit generation algorithm to be more modular which allowed him to change it to regenerate only the orbital parameters that were faulty, while leaving the others intact. Because the code had to be re-designed, this proved to be an excellent opportunity to make it much easier to work with for devs and modders alike. " SM
  2. Not sure why they are not showing up in completed contracts but if you have a contract to test a part that is in a section of the tech tree that you have not yet unlocked you will not gain access to the part. The only way to unlock a part as far as I am aware is to unlock the relevant level of the tech tree (accessible in the R+D building). SM
  3. No problems at all, now show us the base! SM
  4. This is a known issue for the moment preventing us from clipping the hell out of wheels. This thread has some major in depth info and potentially a (complex) solution if you are up for trying it with no guaranteed success. There's also some useful information here again with a couple of potential solutions. Basically there's no easy way around what you are looking to achieve, and I don't believe any mod that suddenly allows you to superclip wheels and suspension into another object. I agree I agree it doesn't look right, but until it's fixed (or broken depending on how you view things (hopefully 1.1.3 maybe @Claw can shed some light?) there is really no alternative but to have super wide wheel base! Also you are using modded wheels so technically this post belongs in Modded support section. SM
  5. Have you tried right clicking on the exe and "running as administrator"? Seemed to solve a similar problem for me.... SM
  6. Cool yep the medium gear is an option! De-powering (or taking fuel out) is best done in the boosters in my experience. If you find that a lighter carrier vehicle is flipping you shuttle down due to being lighter than it was you can de-throttle the boosters, or increase the throttle on the shuttle engines. Or just add weight I didn't have any issues with the shuttle draining fuel from the comsats, but feel free to edit the fuel lines or assembly to get it working the way you like. I'm not sure if the package has been updated in a while so it may have changed the way it works slightly loading it into 1.1.2. Also yes feel free to redesign the comsats to fit in with your RT array! SM
  7. You have a few options here: 1) Kerbal Inventory System (KIS) allows you to add remove or explode (not accurately) parts while "in flight" 2) Java Depart - A simpler form of save file editing (I haven't tried this) 3) Kaboom (The one I think you were thinking of) - Precise destruction of individual parts KIS is probably the best option for you. Hope that helps! SM
  8. Yep there's precedent for this. Behold the mighty Space Husstle and Mained Duck by @Evanitis. As long as the whole thing conforms to the rules there's nothing in there against launching horizontally, hence this exploited loop hole. Go for it! I'm using B9, Mk2 stockalike expansions, Prakasa Aeroworks, Stock Extension, Tweakscale all of which may or may not help with Mk3 parts. There is also Mk3 Hypersonic Expansion, Mk3 Mini Expansion, Mk3 Pod IVA replacement, Mk3 Stockalike expansion all available on CKAN, and I'm sure more than I'm listing if you look through! SM
  9. Ahhh! That explains quite nicely why my perfectly working Buran used to completely crap out on loading in-atmosphere quick saves Also - We made it to page 10 people wooot! SM
  10. This post by sal_vager would appear to suggest that clipping can definitely cause issues with docking ports. Couple of things to try: Reattach the docking ports without clipping to both vessels in VAB and try again. If you can dock then clipping is your issue Have you undocked and are trying to re-dock? If so move farther away from the port before re-approaching If those things don't work then I guess it could either be a bug, or something else I haven't thought of. Hope that helps SM
  11. Excellent welcome to the Shuttle Challenge! Clearly this one's for the modded category so without much further ado here arte your first two badges to kick start your shuttle flying career. Nicely designed shuttle by the way - it's very clearly STS with the modded parts so that's pretty awesome. Bit too much kick down on the nose as you mentioned, but that's more styling points. Onwards and upwards for this shuttle I think! I will update the leaderboards shortly! Also congrats on the new house, getting internet in the new house. I don't know which is more challenging haha! Haha oh my word! What happened with the quicksave??? You were at 5000m then suddenly in a pool on the floor, or did it destabilise the shuttle or something? Technically I can't award you as your shuttle didn't land in one piece, but I'm going to make an exception with this specific case as as a) I'm not that much of a hardass and b) clearly there was some kind of terminal issue that you had, but also c) You have proved that your shuttle can deorbit and land in your previous missions so it's fairly obvious something other than your flying ability went wrong. Here's your badge!! Cool welcome to the challenge Firemetal! Yep shuttles are generally speaking pigs to fly! They require iterative testing and trial and error is really the only way to go about it along with a healthy amount of research! If in doubt SAS authority the hell out of it, but but it's much more satisfying to get something that has fine balance. Pro-tip: A pair of AV-R8 winglets offset into the cockpit can really help with re-entry balance. Look forward to seeing your design and remember if you have something capable of orbit and return you can go from there, and tweak the shuttle design as you go through the rest of the challenges! Pro tip 2: If you can boost the fuel pod to orbit you can complete the other missions without any trouble.... Hmmmmm, very very good question. OK I got this. The answer is no and for one reason only. Your shuttle is lifted into space by carrier vehicles rather than a singular carrier vehicle. If you have a look at this shuttle designed by @robertlong13 you will see a very very similar design to yours, but with one critical difference - The shuttle is attached to a single carrier vehicle rather than two separate drop tanks. Small re-design should see you on your way from here by the looks of it! Let me know if you have any more questions... EDIT: THIS RULING IS NO LONGER VALID. PLEASE SEE THIS POST FOR MORE INFO, AND THE OP FOR THE MOST RECENT RULES. Thanks @Jhawk1099!! Are you talking about making a YouTube mini series of your challenge entries in video format? If so then absolutely go ahead, there are a number of others who are producing video entries to the challenge! If you are talking about something other than just video entries hosted on YouTube then drop me a PM and we can hash it out Thanks all! SM
  12. Naaaaaa! If I shave my Golden Retriever like a lion, will the other dogs respect him more?
  13. I came back from my first (and rather large) mission to Moho using the good old get out and push method! SM
  14. Something odd clearly happened to the engines on the comsats there ey!? I seem to remember that happening to me as well the first time I tried them. Unfortunately you haven't provided proof that you placed the comsats in geostationary orbit so I cannot award you a badge. Geostationary orbit is ~2863.33 km. Hope to see you back in the challenge in the future. Feel free to re-enter when you get bored or frustrated with space-planes SM
  15. I'm familiar with banana mathematics, even if frequently wrong. I'll take one ticket! SM
  16. Hi there! Depends what badge you are going for. If you are going for Pilot then all you have to do is reach 200km+ and deploy the comsats without spin stabilisation. They have enough Dv to make it to Geo from there. If you are going for the pilot badge then you must reach 300km+ and use spin stabilisation. You can go right up to Geo altitude with the shuttle and deploy if you like for either badge (Pilot without spin stabilisation, commander with)! Regarding the spin stabilisation specifically it's accepted that timewarp will stop the spin. It's more for the deployment part and because it's cool piece of engineering that it's in there (and it looks awesome when you deploy them with spin stabilisation. Hope that helps, let me know if any further Q's. @awfulhumanbeing I will pick up your entry when I am home from work tonight and can see the gallery SM
  17. Ooops! Sorry I missed this! This mission definitely qualifies! Here are your badges retrospectively. Leader-board will also be updated Wowa, that's pretty awesome, didn't realise your shuttle can just do the mission without needing a carrier vehicle! Having said that in this configuration it doesn't fit in with the shuttle definition for the challenge. Specifically " It must be lifted into space by a Carrier Vehicle". I know your shuttle is so capable that it didn't need a carrier vehicle, but I guess for the purposes of the challenge that would qualify as an SSTO rather than a shuttle. Damned impressive even if I can't award on it! Unbelievable work and absolutely blowing away the mod category placement. I'll update the leader-board for you later on . KJR would keep you in the modded category for sure! Or how low perhaps?? First let me say that this is incredibly impressive! I really struggled internally with the rule "Boosters may be attached radially on the Carrier Vehicle (no other attachment location is permitted)" but in the end I decided that your shuttle does meet the requirement, as technically although your SRB's are attached to your boosters, the root that they are attached to is the carrier vehicle. I think you've exploited a loop hole that no one else has (I even reviewed every challenge entry again to confirm this and help with judgement) at this point so it's brave to have thrown yourself open to this ruling (unless you saw it as a clear cut case?) Good work on the stock record, superb mission reports (highly detailed), and this shuttle is a total beast! You should be able to easily accommodate the rest of the missions without any (significant) re-designs! Have a couple of badges I'll update the leaderboards soon (next time I'm updating the OP) so you will get tagged on the leader-board once I've updated. Other than that sorry for a patchy weekends adjudicating, it's been quite the couple of days! I also found some time to work on my new shuttle. Name and specification unknown at this point, but I believe it can be called large..... SM
  18. I will reply to the challenge entry when I am a little more ion the level, but let's think about hashing out another challenge for the fuel pod shall we? Clearly Kerbin's SOI isn't going to be enough to contain the 42t beast?! Ideas on a postcard please and I will pick up the convo in the morning SM
  19. Ahha, so I think you are asking that (when you get to the specific mission) can the allowable support launch be an interplanetary tug. The answer is yes. The support mission for STS-10 can boost anything from a single part to a 1000t ultra ship and anything and everything in between. As long as your shuttle is the thing (and the only thing) that makes it to the runway at the end of the mission then you are absolutely fine with taking along as much as you can fit in one support launch. All other missions are not allowed support launches (at this stage). @FCISuperGuy and @Alchemist (and all others, and @awfulhumanbeing if my answer is again not what you were asking) I'll reply tomorrow when I am not so "lubricated" SM
  20. Nice work, I'll update your altitude record shortly. Unfortunately as noted by FCI it's not going to change your rank, but should make your place much harder to take over Have another badge(s)! Wow and wow! Knowing your previous shuttle as I do, I can definitely see heritage there with the design. I didn't get what you meant by you can see your house from here, but I presume it's either something to do with an approximation to earth's geography, or possibly just that KSC is visible? Can't wait to see what else this shuttle is capable of as you progress through the missions, and a massive well done for coming first in the altitude rankings! Unfortunately @n.b.z. you've been knocked off the leaderboard for the moment Here's your badges @FCISuperGuy!! SM
  21. Haha I can tell you that landing on Duna was on the edge of possibility. Unless you have the glide path exactly right for the last couple of km before you hit the deck then hit the deck you absolutely will. I'm not necessarily fixed on the next mission being a landing, but it's one of the missions I'm toying with. I'll keep you updated and you'll see it published probably in the next 24 hours! Thanks very much, have changed the OP to correct the error! I love the way you said "Lift off" at the start of the video . I've actually just learnt something from your video which makes me feel like an absolute amateur. I never focus on the target body to arrange the interplanetary transfer and so end up sometimes making 2 3 or even 4 adjustments on my way in to get the approach I want. Nice "Pro tip"! Anyway, another superb video and beautifully run mission. The Aerocapture at Duna looked tense on the nose cone popping, and the 3.4 km/s aero-capture at Kerbin on the way home was an education in thermal management! You lost your body flap, but seriously great work! I wonder if that's on the limit of aero-capturing a shuttle? For example a high energy transfer from Jool may be a bit of a difficult one. Even the second pass was verging on explody. Without those radiators not possible I don't think! Here is your very very well earned badge Commander! Hi FCI! Thanks for letting me know. I had never even considered this, so thanks very much for pointing this out, and also helping with advice on acceptable tolerances at various altitudes! RULING: Tolerance table to be inserted in to the OP as follows, to allow for varying tolerances at higher altitudes. If people exceed these altitudes and find that extra tolerances are needed then I can add in extra as people go ever higher! 70-1999km - 100m 2000-4999km - 500m 4000-5999km - 1km 6000-8000km - 10km 8000km+ - 50km Cool I thought it was stock, well done! Yes, the missions are designed to be run in sequential order as the missions are designed around a progression in difficulty and rank. The exception is Rank 1 which can be done with or without the fuel pod. Nice look forward to seeing your mission report! SM Sorry I missed this out in the post above. Too much quoting going on!! I'm not entirely sure I'm right about what you are asking here, but here goes: All the missions have to be run sequentially and separately. You cannot wrap up for example STS 9 and 10 in one mission for example. (The only exception being STS -1 and the fuel pod mission can be conducted at the same time). I think you have completed STS-1, so you have to do STS-2, then 3, then 4 etc etc next . I hope that's both what you were asking, and the answer you were looking for. SM. Thought those mainsails would be overkill!
  22. As long as it conforms to the Shuttle definition then you can start it underwater upside down for all I care - Love the diversity in design that comes with a challenge like this! As much as you are comfortable with basically. My Buran has Nukes for moving around in space, and it's just about capable of getting to the surface of Duna and back again . You may or may not be seeing a glimpse of STS-11 here It's all good - At least you came back 1055.10km takes you rocketing into second place on the Stock Leader-board (I'm assuming you are running a stock shuttle?) and unfortunately @Norcurion is knocked off. Sorry! Nicely designed shuttle, particular commendations on your choice of fairing use for the OMS blisters! I'll update the leader-board shortly but here are you two badges. STS Pilot Rank 1, and the flight director badge! It seems this challenge is gathering momentum - Great to see! SM
