  1. I haven't made an SSTO in absolutely ages. In fact I haven't made one since before the significant aero changes occurred as I simply lost the ability to do it. That really had to change so I put my mind to it and over the last 3 days have designed and flown this mission in my spare time. First some stats: Name: Mullet Dyne Crosswing (Variant 5) Parts: 86 (including payload) Mass: 43.155t Cost: 81,464 (including payload) Power: 3 x CR-7, 2 LV-N Mission Report - Click here Awards (Pending review): Advanced Pilot Precision Award 1st Class - Landing on runway and Docking in orbit Utilitarial Commendation - Passengers to orbit Exploratory Utilitarial Commendation - Science Sat to Mun Orbit Exploratory Kosmokerbal Commendation - Visit Mun and Minmus Was good fun to do the K-Prize again. I'll edit my post when you adjudicate on the awards (not sure if exploratory applies to UC and KC awards) SM
  2. Thanks for asking I'm absolutely fine I was in a solid car even though I was t-boned by a 4x4 against my will. My brother will be mostly fine down the line and is very lucky to have not sustained head or spinal injuries, we are all incredibly thankful for that. Putting this in KSP terms so as not to be too graphic but his left leg had a (very nearly) catastrophic RUD while lithobraking against a car pulling a sudden illegal u-turn. Docs have done some wonderful things with struts and structural fuselage from his right leg, but he'll be using launch stability enhancers for quite some time! SM
  3. If you check the full gallery link (in my post) for the 470G entry, the entire payload survived (probe core and chute) . Judging by the 655.9G flight report the parachute survived, but seeing as that was at the cost of the rest of the universe dispersing I'll leave it up to you to judge haha. SM
  4. Sorry to be so late to the party on this. I had a car crash, then my brother had a horrific motorbike accident. 2016 hey! I just want to restate how incredible your work is. I love the drawing which will surely take pride of place on the new shuttle challenge thread when I get round to writing it, but the speedpaint video shows you up to be a true professional. The level of detail and artistic license you took with the whole process is quite literally astounding! Amazing stuff!!! SM
  5. Haha great little challenge. I suspect this will end up being totally blown out of the water, but a nice round 470G from the "Excess Gas" Full Gallery Also worth noting I did manage to go to higher G's (655.9), but not without seemingly destroying Kerbin. EDIT: Stock Entry SM
  6. I have a small craft to submit for this challenge! No formal name but I guess the Mullet Dyne SHVTOL (Super Heavy VTOL) will do: 105 Parts, 79.5t, room for 32 passengers, 4 crew, and cargo. It uses 8 J-33 Wheesley Turbofan engines for vertical thrust, and 2 J-90 Goliaths for normal flight. When in normal flight the J-33's are stowed and most of the intakes shut down for efficiency, but it needs every single one of its 28 air intakes to not flame out while in VTOL mode. As you can see it's very very controllable despite it's size, and due to excellent balancing in the design you can pretty much hover on the spot, allowing for pinpoint landings such as this one on the roof of the VAB: Once in pure flight mode it's capable of maintaining hands free level flight even under 4x time-warp and incredibly user friendly action groups help with things like closing the cargo bay doors and closing the intakes etc: Landing at the island airfield is simple, just taxi down the runway under VTOL thrust with the craft perfectly balanced, and feather the throttle as you come in to reduce your vertical and horizontal speeds for the required touchdown: Once the passengers have had a look around the island it's a simple reverse of the flight so far, again a perfectly balanced VTOL takeoff, followed by a banking turn to gain altitude before flying back to towards the space center: Another taxi under VTOL mode over to the aircraft bay by the SPH and we are ready for touchdown: There we have it! I actually tried and failed (as I normally do) to build something small, and in the end just went overboard. With a few quality of life tweaks the Mullet Dyne SHVTOL would basically be ready for the spacecraft exchange. It's also capable of VTOL water landings without any difficulty. SM
  7. @PineI just wanted to check in very quickly to say that this is absolutely incredible, and I love it. Unfortunately I've been in a car accident (not my fault) and all my energy is going to into sorting it quickly so I can get back to work. I'll check in once I'm back on 4 wheels SM
  8. that is genuinely terrifying SM
  9. I've heard of higher Ore concentrations, but you've basically struck ore there sir. Dig in and drill!! SM
  10. As you like basically @Pine feel free to speed paint or not, and extra details just do what ever you like also. I'm sure whatever you do is going to be awesome!! SM
  11. Ah good call! I tried just spinning up the capsule last night to ridiculously high speed, but no joy. Didn't think of this. will also try and report back SM
  12. I got one of these last night, but the requirement is to make them pass out in orbit (which wasn't that clear from the description) so I also tried the parachute thing last night and it made them lose it, but didn't fulfil the contract because it wasn't in orbit. I'm going to try after work tonight. I suspect something with inordinately high TWR on orbit will have to be built. SM
  13. ANNOUNCEMENT - THREAD CLOSED FOR REFURBISHMENT It's been an amazing run with this thread, but with the pending release of 1.2 it's time to take a fresh look at the future of this very special set of challenges. All the new features being introduced provide an ideal opportunity to temporarily close the doors on the Shuttle Challenge, sweep out the cobwebs, and generally make this challenge fit for the 1.2 epoch to follow. I'd like to take this opportunity to say thanks to all the participants, advice givers, rule benders, architects, engineers, and taggers-along that have made this challenge what it is. Rest assured we will be back in business soontm SM
  14. @Pine and @LaytheDragon these are both excellent! Love following this thread. Also - Woot I'm front of the queue, cannot waiiiiit to see how you go with this one Pine!!! SM
  15. I like your style with the individual badges for each mission - must take a while to produce so extra imaginary points for effort there! It truly is a massive shuttle, but clearly still has a few development issues to iron out, particularly with those engines which seem to be pretty liable to falling off! Anyway, its refreshing to see a shuttle so large it destroys the runway, so again extra style points there! Here's a badge! With regards STS-2B I'm afraid I have to take the rule that I take with everyone else, which is "pictures or it didn't happen". I'm confident you have completed the mission, but no bending the rules I'm afraid You can re-run soon if you would like, but it's not mandatory to move on with the missions.... Haha, yeah the Shuttle lofted to space but the SSTO is the ultimate in your face to the SSTO itself. I mean if the SSTO can get there, then why not just get the SSTO to do the entire mission right? But alas, no SSTO challenge is this so winged orbiters have to step up to the plate! Looking forward to seeing if you manage to do this. I still can't design an effective SSTO, let alone one that can loft a Shuttle and it's payload! Anyway folk, that's all for the moment, and again thanks very much for the patience! I will be making a small announcement on the thread soon so stay tuned! SM
  16. Nice thread OP, will be checking in here regularly to separate fiction and rumor from confirmed fact. Other than that I shall be gamely riding the wave of mutilation through to the other side, patiently awaiting 1.2, and planning a total re-work of the Shuttle Challenge thread. All this heat should have people looking the other way just long enough for me to make some progress. To everyone involved in working on KSP, current, past or future - You have given me selflessly a part of my unrequited wish to explore, to be an engineer, to build rockets and visit the solar system of of your collective making. You have re-kindled a spark in gaming that was largely wondering without aim, and introduced me to an incredible community which I love being a part of. Regardless of anything else said or to be said, I couldn't think higher of your contributions. Thank you. SM
  17. Really sorry for the delay and for not checking in with this forum. I've been away for a few days on holiday largely out of range of any possible internet connection, and at points quite deep underground. Mystery? Ahha! A new entrant - welcome to the challenge! Very unusual shuttle design you have there. I presume at this stage a stock entry? If so I like what you did with the fuel tanks to give a checkerboard effect . I'll have to update the leader-board shortly, but in the mean time here are your badges for your first run, and I look forward to seeing more from this obviously capable shuttle! . Annnd here's your badge for successfully graduating to commander level. May all your landings be runway bound . That's a mega beast of a shuttle! Welcome to the challenge. Of course you are welcome to do 1A and 1B together. Also you can do 2A and 2B together if you are feeling daring! Anyway, apart from the touch and go re-entry (more balancing required?) you ran an excellent mission, and are thoroughly deserving of your two badges pilot! Looks like I'll be updating the leaderboard shortly! Sorry again for the delay all! SM
  18. With many thanks to @FCISuperGuy, and before him @inigma Totally agree, his challenge is still probably in my all time top 3 favorite. I remember also very very fondly @sturmstiger's Duna Permanent Outpost Mission Architecture Challenge. There is a challenge that could do with being resurrected for sure! SM
  19. Ah cool I was hoping to see you pop up in this challenge! I've already watched the first few videos which definitely prove your shuttle not only highly capable, but also a dream to fly. Very happy to reward you with your first badge! I'll hold fire to award the space station missions as the challenge is designed to be run in mission order. However when you reach the relevant missions I'll review the rest of the station build missions and award as required! Good luck with the other challenges. Seeing as 1.2 is about to drop you might want to wait for a week or so to see how this challenge might change - the Geo sats mission in particular will be revamped. Cheers SM
  20. Hey sorry for the delay in visiting this thread to pass out missions. Got a new starter next week and wanted to make sure all was pleasant for their arrival. Nothing like starting a new job where no-one has prepared for someone! Great job with this mission report. Your mining base seemed really well put together and the shuttle clearly performed admirably throughout the mission. Have a badge with many many stars! Nice, you've got the beginnings of a decent shuttle there! Not sure about the SRBs on the boosters though? Keep this in your pocket if you don't mind until 1.2 formally drops. This challenge is currently only for 1.1.x, but will be going through a revamp to properly make sense with 1.2's new features. In the meantime though keep working on it, but don't submit any new missions with your 1.2 build as you may find some changes coming! It's a great set of challenges for sure! Welcome to the thread . The only insane thing is that shuttle! Phew, it's a beauty! To clarify on the Mk3 cargo bay, that is the minimum requirement for the suggested payload, but use whatever cargo bay you like. Obviously you will be sitting in the modded category for you entry but that is all good, plenty are, and it really allows the expansion of some cool looking craft! Can't wait to see this one competing, but if you are using 1.2 I would ask you to hold fire for the moment until the full release is done Right, give me a half hour to digest this mission report.....Awwwwww look at the wee little exploration aircraft!!!! That's so good I think I'm going to award you the Skunkworks badge in recognition of excellent design, along with your dual shuttle, and mining rig. For the rest of your mission, wow, a full Jool epic, that's really something. I'd love to see you try the full shuttle Jool 5 for sure. Take the badge good sir! Also - Nerd-sniped. That's just brilliant SM
  21. I'd say yes, but I'm next in the queue for Pine so maybe it's a little unfair to get double the love. Still if you were at a loose end I'm not going to hold you back SM
  22. Nice little expansion of this thread to include some other artists - I think it's a great idea! Really excited to be up next - Cannot wait. Oh yes @Pine if you want to do a speed paint video then feel free, but if it's down to a time thing then rather you focus on the core drawing! Totally going to use it (with credit) as the feature image of my Challenge thread! Also, there's nothing I can see that would be of value to be added into the final drawing, but of course use your creative imagination to do whatever you see fit SM
  23. That's a really nicely executed shuttle you have there! Building a shuttle and building a shuttle that can reliably boost modules to orbit are two rather different prospects so again well done! Loved the first 3 videos too. Pity that the god rays or whatever it is haven't been fixed, but really nicely done video all the same! Would be great to see this shuttle partake in the Shuttle Challenge thread if you ever fancy dropping in SM
