I would ask NASA, ESA or Elon Musk if they want to use it to power a manned mission to Mars. In Exchange i want to fly with them an be the first human on Mars

The only craft woth real asparagus staging is my Eve lander, but that is due to another rule i gave myself: Everything has to fit in a fairing...
-
Wow, thats nearly the same price when you would make it on your own here in Germany. I thought i would be much cheaper when you can buy it made in industrial scale...
-
In Germany its impossible to buy KNO3 and build rocketmotors from it if you dont have a licence (which is a smaller problem) and a officialy authorised production facility (i dont think my backyard counts, so this is the real problem). While you cant buy KNO3 you can buy other chemicals to make it on your own, but since the complete internet is under surveillance and KNO3 is officialy an "explosive" its very likely you have the GSG9 on your door the next day, because you could be a terrorist. (i think the keywords in this post are enough for someone to look over this, greetings to you xD) I have no idea why they have that restrictive laws in Germany, it drives harmless rocketbuilders into illegality while the "bad guys" still have their sources. I can understand why Ammonium perchlorate is prohibited, its realy dangerous, but KNO3 is as bad as gasoline... BTW: How much is one Kilo of KNO3 in countrys where its legal? Im just wondering how much such a hobby would cost...

Oh yeah, thats so true. I was realy good at math in school (i didnt even learn much for our final test in school and passed with 14 out of 15 Points) and loved it, but now at university its awful...

The apollo programme(discussion + analysis of conspiracy theories)
Elthy replied to landeTLS's topic in Science & Spaceflight
My favorite arguments that humans were on the moon: 1. The soviets had the tech to disprove the americans, afaik there was even a soviet probe orbiting the moon when Apollo 11 landed. There would be no way they wouldnt have used this chance... 2. Look at the Saturn 5. Its massive! Where else would you go with such a big rocket if not to the moon? -
Why can't rocket engines be throttled / restarted?
Elthy replied to Comrade Jenkens's topic in Science & Spaceflight
You can find some facts about engine restarts on this blog (its from an engineer involved in the developement of the J2-X engine) in the most recent posts. But i would recommend to read the whole blog if you are interested in rocket engines anyway... -
Thats a realy awesome rover! Im playing with the restriction to get everthing in a fairing, too, but i never came up with such an amazing piece of tech...

There is nothing less important for KSP-performance than disk space and the RAM-size...

[SHOWCASE] The Escape Tower Exchange!
Elthy replied to sal_vager's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Funny that you post this thread now, i just build a Launch Escape System that i though was so cool that i build a whole SLS+Orion style spacecraft around it. I allways had problems to build good looking escape towers when i wanted to fit a dockingport under it, it allways looked like this: But with a little clipping i got this: The escape tower is afaik from KSPX, the small things on the top are the stronger sepatrons from KW-Rocketry. There are four of them, but i used symetry on only one pair to enable asymetric thrust on abort and tower seperation... -
The GTX 760 is enough for KSP (im quite sure its an overkill, but weaker cards dont make sense). But in other recent games the GPU will be the bottleneck most of the times, since you have a powerfull CPU... Did you check the price of a R9 270X or a HD 7950?They gave nearly the same performance. Also it is important to select the right cooling solution, but i cant suggest you one...

You wrote in you first post about memory on graphic cards as an important factor. It is not, it just has to be enough (2GB is enough for everything on Full-HD, even 1 GB is good enough for most games). The interesting factor is the power of the chip and here you dont need that much for KSP. You should choose a card from the newer generations (AMD 7XXX or R7/9 2XX, Nvidia GTX 6XX/7XX), the have MUCH more power than the older generations and are way more efficient, also they have better featuresets so and never DirectX versions so you can play new games for a longer time before you have to switch again. Regarding the Brand: Nvidia and AMD are tied on Graphic Power (a R290X is as good as a GTX 780ti, a 280X as good as a GTX 770 etc.) but they differ from price per performance, at least here in Germany Nvidia is allways more expensive than AMD, but that can differ in you country. Regarding SSD vs. HDD: ALLWAYS choose a SSD (i would choose Samsung 840 Evo Series). They are more durable than HDDs in most cases and much, much faster. If you need space to store videos etc. you can buy a HDD for that, too, but allways use a SSD for your OS and Programs... I would go to a special hardware dedicatet forum from you country, there are way more people who know about such stuff and you should read several tests about everything you want to buy (never trust the description in stores).

Kethane Pack 0.9.2 - New cinematic trailer! - 1.0 compatibility update
Elthy replied to Majiir's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
How does the Intake of the Kethane-Engine work? I tried to build a Duna Plane, but it seems like the special intake-resource gets used up like fuel, once its empty i dont get new air. I tested the same plane on Kerbin, the intake worked in the beginning, but it then suddenly it went from full to empty in a single frame. On my way back to the surface, much lower in the atmosphere, "KIntakeAir" went from empty to full in one frame again... -
The main problem is that more dockingports dont look that good, also the partcount is allready to high (look at the panels from b9)
-
I plan to build a huge spacestation with some massive solar panel (the ones from Kosmos). I docked two truss-sections (both with a pair of solar panels) together, using bicouplers like this: But the alignment is not perfect, which results in a difference at the tips of the panels of 0.5m, which is realy annoying. Both docking ports have the "decouple" option, meaning they are properly attached, but it still looks like this: (the other pair is perfect) I have tried to undock and redock it, but i never got it straight. Do you have any suggestions how to solve this problem? I dont mind installing mods or edit my savefile...

Majority of Americans Think Astrology Is A Science
Elthy replied to NASAFanboy's topic in The Lounge
The more i read about education and stuff like that in the USA the more i am afraid. Strong political forces who take god as the only foundation of their politics and an (at least it seems like this) educational system close to complete breakdown (teaching creationism, extreme liabilities for going to university, no political interests etc.). Im afraid that, if we have an asteroid threatening and we need Nasa, the future US-President just would start praying or declare its god's punishment for sins... -
KSP suddenly appeared on other forums. After i read the name some times i googled it and found the demo (at that time 18.3 was new). On the evening i told some friends on our TeamSpeak Server, we all downloaded the demo and startet a race to the mun. I won because i found Scott Manly on youtube that day
-
Wow... I just saw "Neil" and when i noticed the rocket i was realy excited. I didnt know you did such a wonderfull thing to the craft i posted months ago. Used by the (IMHO) greates artist on the forum to honor the greatest mission of mankind

JP Aerospace and the Airship to Orbit program
Elthy replied to Rakaydos's topic in Science & Spaceflight
As i understand the upper airship should stay in the atmosphere for a long time. But they could lift up new hydrogen with every "launch", so that could be solved... I dont think its that easy to "simply build it bigger" to lift heavy stuff. You have to think about stuff like load distribution and it has to be realy light... -
On Swearing, Cussing, Cursing, and Profane Language
Elthy replied to Tex's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Most times i swear when something goes wrong especialy when its surprising. I dont care if others swear, but i care which words they are using. I know some people who say stuff like "dirty jew" or similar words when they are killed in a shooter or similar and this realy nakes me angry, most of them dont realise what they are doing with such insultions... -
JP Aerospace and the Airship to Orbit program
Elthy replied to Rakaydos's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I dont think that would work, hydrogen (or helium) loss would be a huge problem. Afaik the atoms are so small that they can escape nearly everywhere, especialy through a thin foil...
